Chapter 3 - Punishment By Death

The scene of the previous night kept plaguing Kat as she sat on top of her cave doing lookout duty. She couldn't fix her eyes on anything as her mind echoed everything. She had taken lives before but this one was different. Felix had always dealt the killing blow. Felix always helped. This time, Felix was only a distraction with a fake truce.

It was her idea. Why did it plague her so much?

That simple question was what had driven Kat insane while Felix was angry. It was his turn to hunt but he hadn't left the cave entrance. For the last hour, he simply paced up and down. He was fed up with Kat acting out after each mission, balling into tears as if it was bad. He stopped his patrol to look up at her to only turn away.

Her green eyes always pierced him. They hit somewhere he never could explain yet he knew it was all false. Kat was made to be beautiful in anyone's eyes. Kat was the perfect beauty to the beholder.

Felix sat on the ground while muttering insults. He was sick of dealing with her and demanded an apology, the team knew that was the answer. Kat stayed up on top of the cave knowing this. She didn't once consider going down despite knowing the answer to the issue. Stubborn to the boot they both refused to look at each other and grumbled away.

This only kept up for a further fifteen minutes. Kat's stomach started to grumble and she realised it would be impossible to make anything. It was the very reason Felix was supposed to hunt. Carefully she slid down the smoother surface of the cave and sat next to him, making her entrance known with a loud cough.

"When do you plan on hunting Felix? If you keep this up we won't be able to eat," she said sternly but still refused to look at him. Her eyes would only be reflected back at her. It was the one thing all beholders shared, her guilty green eyes. Though her thoughts ran rampage as she waited for an answer, she got none. Felix refused to answer her question and she was left with her thoughts for a couple more minutes.

She hated every moment of it. Her hands felt sweaty as her mind remembered just how vivid the red was as it stained everything around the head. One-shot had exploded it and ruined the mentality of the people who witnessed it.

Kat quickly pushed Felix as she tried to get rid of the fear. "Felix, go hunt!" Felix ignored her and stay silent on which Kat responded by standing up and kicking him. He stirred as he stood up too but as he turned around his brows were furrowed with hate. They dug at her for so long.

He kept his stare for a whole minute before he turned away with his knives in hand. Kat didn't relax until he was completely gone. Only the shadows of the trees and the camp in front of the cave remained. She sat down on a log and stared at the unlit campfire.

Felix and Kat had murdered four teams now. They were ranking up faster than any other team and were nearing their goal to reach five. The dream everyone in this forsaken world wanted. Five teams to lose during the unlimited time of the bounties would grant the duo with another perfection.

Kat already wielded the perfect beauty, her body type, her face, her weight, her height and even her voice was different to each person that looked at her. Kat even saw herself the way she always thought was a beautiful person. Perfectly beautiful and able to be a model loved by all yet she was cursed by this world.

There were nine sections of this world with each spilt by colours. There were also seven teams named after colours. Over the short while, Felix and Kat had spent they had learned how this world works. You kill to be rewarded. You die to be punished. You follow the laws of R.A.I.N.B.O.W. to become closer to the perfect human.

Every five-team kills you make together is another perfection rewarded to you. That was how this world worked. Kat knew this and wanted to 'win' the game. Felix had agreed with her as well. If the two became the most perfect beings, without any flaws whatsoever, they would practically be Gods.

This goal felt so out of reach now for Kat. Her entire stomach churned at the idea she had to kill more. She laid her head on a log as her hair started to wrap around her. It was the only thing to hug her and reassure her she was in the right. Somehow.

She was in no shape or form tired yet she found herself napping within seconds. The mental toll was too much and her mind didn't stop even in her dreams.

Kat, you are the reason people suffer in this world! You keep killing us… all of us!

There were eight people in front of Kat, each wearing their set of team colours. No one person in that crowd spoke the words she heard inside her head. Instead, it forced its way inside and screamed at her. It chanted at her that she was worth nothing and only deserved death.

The group drew closer in a slow shamble like zombies. That was when Kat realised that each person before her was a person killed in her path. Their bodies reflecting the state they were left. Some lacked a face, others lacked legs but the most common was the bullet holes that punctured their body in all sorts of places.

You fucking killed us just because you wanted to be perfect. You lied to us! You stole from us! You murdered us!

The inner voice in her head screamed once more forcing her to buckle to her knees and clutch her head. The voice sounded like a hissing pot that was overboiled and it refused to leave. Its words were filled with anger and betrayal. Its words were the truth of everyone having enough.

The Team Red had bullied for so long and it was time it stopped.

The shambles of the hordes feet grew to a close as they stood around Kat. Broken down on the ground, they looked down with a long look of anger.

"REPENT! REPENT! REPENT FOR YOUR SINS!" they all chanted as they took out sticks and began to beat her. They kept chanting over and over and over again. They kept beating her until she was black and bruised. They didn't stop when blood was spilt. They kept going over and over and over again.

"REPENT! REPENT! REPENT FOR YOUR SINS KAT!"

"KAT! FOR FUCK SAKE, WAKE UP KAT!"

The rude and harsh tones of Felix was somehow welcomed from the torture Kat had gone through in her dream world. As her eyes flickered open she realised her cheeks were wet. Her head bolted up and it was then she noticed how long she had slept.

The once sleepy sun had now fully gone to rest, instead the moon had taken its place and millions of stars glittered in rejoice. The campfire had been lit and two large sticks were dug into the ground. Two large carps poked through as they began to char by the fire.

Having no words and not sure if she had the ability to do so, Kat sat up and just watched the fire in silence for a moment. It drove Felix over the edge as she was pushed.

"You were on lookout duty! You say to me all the time not to slack off but after you refuse to apologise and demand I get food, you rest as you've been through the hard work!" his voice was loud as some birds flew off in fright but he wasn't done. He had enough.

"You killed people! Get fucking over it. You've killed much more than two loser yellow teams who likely already got their replacement. They were the ones who fell for a stupid plan and a lie of truce. They were the ones who said to meet up in the woods of all places. After all of our hard work to get here, are you really about to act all innocent and as if you care about people!"

His voice was coarse as he finished his rant, his face red from the anger. He grabbed his canteen and took a long drink and all Kat could do was look down at the ground.

"T-The face Bolt made when Lacy died…" she muttered as she could feel the familiar wetness cover her cheeks. "He looked and couldn't speak. He didn't scream he just stared helplessly. He walked so slowly and sat by her. Then… Then he looked right at me just as I shot him!"

"You keep saying that we have to do this but is this even right anymore! We kill and kill for our own gains and never think of oth-" her words were cut off.

Tears stopped as she looked up at Felix and she felt the sudden surge of heat in her chest. A knife had been lodged into her and Felix held it tightly. He stared down at her with his furrowed brow and that's when Kat noticed his eyes.

Unlike her own, they were not guilty green but instead empty. There was no light or shine of water in his eyes. They were a dark green that stared deeply down at her, judging but with no real emotion tied to them.

Felix spat on her as he twisted the knife further in her chest. His muddy brown hair beginning to stain as blood splashed back. His knife kept twisting and twisting. Kat's voice stolen as wanted to scream for help. He could see the pain but he kept the pressure on. Felix opened his mouth and it almost seemed like a smile as he whispered his next words.

"You are no longer needed on this team then. Team Red is not for weak links."
