Chapter 20 - Chief Detective Xiaozhi

B City Violent Crimes investigation unit

It was time for the change of shifts for the night. The precinct was gradually emptying, the Majority of the officers were clocking out.

Only a few of the officers were left most of which were on the night shift, while the few remaining officers were held up by reports and the rest.

Among them was Kong Ming a young male detective of the Violent Crimes investigation unit. He was a key member of the team in charge of the investigation of the murder of Mandy Lee.

He was carefully going through the surveillance footage from the day of the incident.

After close to two months of investigation, they were yet to make a breakthrough. The only lead they had gotten had been debunked by his alibi. They were once again back to the beginning.

Meanwhile, in the background, an office door was gently pushed opened and a stoic-faced balding man in a uniform walked out.

His shirt was lined with a long line of medals. He walked up to the wooden railings overlooking the ground office. After a thorough glance through, he walked down the stairs and walked up to Kong Ming's cubicle.

"Detective Kong"

"captain Huang, how may I help you" Kong Ming sharply pushed back his seat and turned around to face him.

"Where is the Chief Detective? I would like to have a word with him", Captain Huang said.

"Sir, Chief detective Shi is currently out on an investigation"

"when he gets back, please let him know I would like to have a word with him"

"Yes Sir"

"Alright, I'll leave you to your work. keep it up," Captain Huang turned around and went up to his office.

forty minutes later Chief Detective Xiaozhi was back from his investigation. Chief Detective Xiaozhi walks in with Detective Wen Zhu and Guo Jiajia.

Kong Ming's cubicle was directly close to the door, so he saw the Chief detective come in.

Kong Ming looking up for his screen, pushing back his seat and Stood.

"Chief Shi you're back"

"Kong Ming you're still here? Chief detective Shi Xiaozhi walked over to a free desk and took a seat. He pulled a pack of cigarettes and lighter out of his pockets.

He put a stick in between his lips about to light the cigarette when she was interrupted.

"Chief Shi, While you were the Captain asked for you. He would like to have a word with you"

"Right now?"

"Yes sir, The captain is waiting in his office"

"I should get going"

Shi Xiaozhi returned his cigarettes and lighter into his pants pocket, pushed back his seat, and left for the captain's office. When he got to the captain's office, he knocked on the door.

*Knock* *knock*

"Come in"

When he received a response, turned the door nub around and walked into the office. Captain Huang was seated at his desk head bent, reading through some files.

"Hello, Captain" Shi Xiaozhi said standing in front of the desk.

"Ah, Xiaozhi. Have a seat"

"Thank you, sir"

"How is the investigation going, do you have another lead?"

Captain Huang sat back, hand-pressed together and placed on the desk.

"Not yet Sir"

"Xiaozhi. I understand that you and your team, are working hard to crack this case and I applaud you all for all your efforts, but this is taking too long.

"The press is getting agitated, this is a high profile case Xiaozhi. Everyone has their eyes on this case.

"I got a call a few hours ago from the commissioner, He has given you a deadline, you have two weeks to close this case or you will be pulled from the case"

"Yes sir"

Meanwhile, On the ground floor.

Guo Jiajia watched Shi Xiaozhi walk up the stairs and into the captain's office. They both let out a breath of relief as soon as Shi Xiaozhi shut the door.

Guo Jiajia let out a sigh and sat quickly on the seat "I'm exhausted, I feel like I ran a marathon"

"This is nothing compared to what we've been through. You have to harden up if you're going to be a police officer. This job requires that of you," Wen Zhu Said walking closer to Kong Ming's cubicle. "you had better get started with your report"

"Oh my, that's true. I will get right on it" Guo Jiajia said jumping out of the seat and running to her desk.

She didn't want to get on the Chief Detective's bad side. She had already heard of the Chief Detective's working style and temper. When she was still at the police academy.

She was so happy, when she found out that she had been posted to work with the detective. Chief Detective Shi Xiaozhi was very popular in his field.

He was the youngest Chief Detective in the history of the B city police department. A lot of her classmates had been hoping to work with him.

Minutes later Shi Xiaozhi left the captain's office and went down to his office. The captain's word put him on edge.

He didn't like the direction in which things were going. The commissioner was turning Mandy Lee's murder case into a political case. He just wanted to use this case, as a means of getting people's votes for the upcoming election.

The case was very tricky, nothing was adding up. There was little evidence to go by. The surveillance camera had been under maintenance, so there was no photo evidence of the killer entering and leaving.

The community Security guards also didn't remember seeing anyone leave. The only solid lead had been, one of the security guard's testimony.

Which led them to investigate the pop stars lover Director Sun of Sun industries. Who had a solid alibi placing him away from the scene during the murder.

After losing their sole lead they were now back to the beginning.

He went straight into his office, walked up to the whiteboard, picked up a marker, and wrote out in bold letters.

Who killed Mandy Lee?
