Chereads / The Odd Ninja / Chapter 5 - Well this is nice

Chapter 5 - Well this is nice

For once I didn't sleep at the Hatake residence. Normally I just hangout over there and simply don't leave. The Hatake's don't seem to mind especially once I started cooking meals, I wonder what Kakashi did for food last night?

After the Academy I just kinda wandered around taking in the sights, tried and failed to walk on water, laid in the sun tell my clothes dried and before I knew it I was eating food in a part of the village I've never been to before. I felt it would be weird if I just showed up in the middle of the night and crashed out in Sakumos room.

Sakumo even got me my own futon.

Returning to my apartment I had to get in through the window as I lost my key somewhere in the Hatake household. I've been gone so long there's two envelopes on the counter presumably full of money, who delivers these?

This apartment isn't as nice as I remember.

The next day I went to the Academy fully expecting to see a starving Kakashi begging for me to return. But there was no Kakashi, hell even Guy wasn't here so I sat alone at our desk thingy.

Typically whenever we were required to pair up I would pair up with Guy and Kakashi would just kinda do his own thing since Sensei wasn't really concerned about him being top of the class. But today both of my potential partners were gone so I got stuck with Uchiha Obito, the current student with the worst grade or as Kakashi calls him dead last.

Kinda messed up class rankings are put on the wall for all to see.

I'm not too sure about the specifics of Kakashi's relationship with Obito but it is definitely a weird one. It's strange I had to worm my way in day after day just to not be ignored. Obito didn't have to do that because he has had this weird revelry with Kakashi since day one. Kinda like Guys more friendly revelry but even he had to get Kakashi's attention first.

It's funny Kakashi will ignore just about anything, even the existence of an entire person but the second you challenge him  you've got his full attention. Doesn't even gotta be something serious. I've seen him train rock skipping just because he lost to Sakumo.

"So you and Kakashi's are like dating right?," Gotta throw him off his balance.

"What no! Wh-."

"Then why do you get a free pass into his head and I had to bash my way in."

"Huh?"

"I've worked hard to be someone Kakashi can call a friend and I had help from his father. What makes you so special?" I said speculation in my voice.

Obito was trying to find a rebuttal. He is really trying.

"Let's go over your relationship with Kakashi."

"Shouldn't we be working on-."

"Gasp Obito working on his academics, this isn't the dead last Kakashi loves so much."

"Hey!"

"Oh my apologies Uchiha-sama. I understand academics aren't for everyone, you're more of an action kinda guy huh?"

"Yeah!"

"And that's why you're always trying to beat Kakashi so he will see you in a different light and realize how cool, strong, and deserving of his love," the look on his face was priceless. Oh I like this one I'm gonna keep him.

"No! Would you stop saying that."

I wasn't entirely convinced but I need more information for further investigation so I'll need to probe Kakashi before continuing with Obito.

"For now, but this conversation isn't over."

Returning to our work, I looked over at Obito's paper. Oh sweetie you're really trying aren't you.

I did my best to get to the root of his academic issues. It seems he has some key info wrong and that keeps messing him up everywhere else.

"Not to pry Obito but knowing the basics is kinda expected of you before enrolling?"

"My grandmother did her best to teach me but I've always had trouble."

Seeing how close to a potential delicate topic I immediately shifted the conversation, Hopefully I'm just paranoid.

"Anyways! look at that were done," Getting up I grabbed his paper as well.

Returning to the desk I retook my spot next to Obito.

"Wanna go get something to eat?"

"But we're in class."

"Oh Academy ended like fifteen minutes ago."

"What!" Looking around he saw it was just us in the class.

"Why didn't sensei say anything?"

"We weren't gonna finish in time. I asked sensei for more time and i'd be helping you. He gave the ok and just to put our work on his table thingy," looking at me he still seemed a little confused, "hey you're the one who didn't notice all the others walking out the door or that one Rin girl who tried to get your attention."

That certainly got his attention

"What, why didn't you say anything if you noticed!"

"You were in the zone I had to get up to stop her from interrupting you, all she wanted was to say goodbye," I said nonchalantly.

"So you hungry?

"Yeah."

"Cool, let's go."

"Hey Kakashi wait up."

Quicken my pace i caught up to Kakashi who I'm sure actually sped up when I shouted out for him. The two of up left the Academy for what I was expecting was another day of Kakashi-sensei training. Once out of the building we were met by an unexpected sight.

Sakumo.

Sakumo had returned to the war. Apparently Sakumo is kind of a big shot in the village. So I didn't expect to see Sakumo for another few months.

"Hey old man what brings you back to our humble village,"

"Old man?"

"As the oldest person I know the title belongs to you."

Kakashi didn't say any more than one word replies but his mood was noticeably happer.

"So what's the occasion?"

"What do you mean?"

"Come on you wouldn't be found dead in anything but your village uniform and yet for the first time since we met you've not only touched the clothes in your closet but are actually wearing them," even Kakashi was curious.

"Should have guessed nothing would get past you two. I'm not supposed to day anything but I'll make an exception. But both of you must not spread this anywhere."

"Sir yes sir," I said with a salute. Does salute mean anything here?

"Yes father."

"The war is over."

"..."

This calls for celebration.

Turning around I ran off back towards the Academy leaving two confused Hatake's.

Where is he?

Found him or more accurately them.

Coming to a stop i didn't waste a moment

"Would you like to come over for dinner at… my place to celebrate the- " what came out next was a garbled mess as I had to stop myself.

"To celebrate… youth?" I said carefully.

Looking at the only two being who consistently match my energy and amplify it, the larger one had a large smile.

"We would be honored to join you for dinner to celebrate YOUTH!" Replied Dui

"Cool come over in… ah two hours? Yes two hours," scribing the address on the fence for them i was off.

I was able to catch up to the Hatake's before they arrived home.

"What'd you run off for?"

"What are you talking about? Are you feeling well Kakashi?" I said denying everything.

Kakashi wasn't amused.

"Freeloader."

"Did you hear that Sakumo sounds like someone who doesn't want dinner."

I received a laugh from Sakumo.

Once we arrived I began immediately on dinner cooking much more than then i usually would. I even had to send Sakumo to go get some things we were out of.

I never really thought myself much of a cook. All I really do is experiment. A little more of this, a little less of that. I slowly figure out what the Hatake's like and work from there.

Kakashi sat there watching me for some reason.

The sound of someone knocking on the front door caught our attention.

"Kakashi be a dear and get the door for me thanks sweetie," I said returning to the food.

Kakashi didn't even respond just got up and went to answer the door.

Sakumo entered the kitchen a moment later.

"Food done?"

"Almost set the table for five will you."

"Five?"

Right on que Kakashi walked back in with the… Might's? That sounds wrong but is no different than if I said Hatake's.

"Oh yes, Kakashi invited guests."

"No I didn't."

"Oh really? My mistake anyways, welcome to the Hatake household, take a seat and food will be served momentarily."

Guy was eager to eat and helped me transfer the food to the table. We ate, we talked, we laughed . Kakashi even took off his mask and I think I saw him smile.

This dinner was easily my most treasured memory, something I will never forget if I had it my way that dinner would have never ended.

Unfortunately nothing good ever lasts…
