"Jess....alright then Jess, just want to say your mechs are easy to reverse engineer. Your gun deterrent is definitely risky but I was able to disarm it with ease." I glance over at the mech as it runs around, jumping from time to time, the metal glistening as the hydraulics silently shift to haul its massive frame across the blood soaked battlefield.
I suddenly hear a voice speak up, quietly laced with disbelief. "Your lying." I glance over to see the angry loli glaring up at me with a slight look of disbelief on her face. I giggle as I look over at what remains of the massive worm robot.
"I would try to reverse engineer your robot, but it's sadly...let's just say destroyed." I gaze across its metal frame as spikes of metal flex off the creature, as if trying to grab the sky.
I immediately hear her respond angrily, "Don't touch her! Zerophina is mine!"
I look down to see the loli now trying to get up, but shivering severely. 'Is it really that cold out here?' I ask myself as I look at the ground and realize the mud is beginning to freeze.
'I guess the ground was heated up from the fight.' I begin to walk around and find clothes on dead bodies. After finding the cleanest ones, I bring them back and throw them into the hole, hitting Jess square in the face.
She takes a moment before glaring at me as she looks at the uniforms in her lap, "What are these for?" I look down at her as I simply say, "Your my captive, not my slave. I don't know how cold it is right now but I am still human. Besides I don't want you dying of frostbite because I have questions that need answered."
She glares at me for a little longer before reluctantly putting on the clothes, her body growing in size slightly as she layers on the thin clothes.
I smile, looking at her as she looks like a little kid, which piques my first question. "So what is a kid like you fighting on a battlefield like this, and in an experimental machine like that?"
She stayed silent for a moment before answering, "I'm 27 first of all and me driving Zerophina is none of your business." I am shocked as I look at her 4'9ft tall childish stature before trying to suppress a snicker, "What's so funny?" She asks as her glare hardens into daggers. I quickly wave my hand, "Nothing, nothing. Anyway you guys were already winning by a large margin, why did you whip out your experimental machine?"
She stays silent for a moment as she stares at the ground. 'Guess she refuses to tell me that.' As I begin to walk away, I hear her voice, "I wouldn't be talking to you right now as an enemy if you did know about your government's true nature."
I pause as I look at her, "Excuse me?" She stays silent for a moment as I wait for her response, "We may be a country now, but do you know how we started?" She asks as she looks up at me. I stay silent as I stare at her with the best poker face I can.
"A revolution against your government, I used to be a leading scientist and engineer at the United States. I used to enjoy my job, the good pay, and my happy life. But one day, when I accidentally messed up a machine which resulted in the lab being destroyed. I knew I screwed up. I left and went into hiding. I eventually heard from an old colleague that someone was sent to assassinate me, but failed, said it would go against their morals or some shit."
My mind suddenly flashes back to when I was in that room, with the admiral. When he told me to kill a kid but then held my family above my head. Suddenly, a new memory resurfaces that I haven't seen before. I am walking down a hall when I suddenly hear several gunshots, I run towards the room and burst inside with my pistol out of its holster, ready to shoot. But when I enter, I immediately freeze, there stands the same admiral, his gun pointing at a body as it slowly falls to the ground.
"What's going on sir? Are you ok?" I ask with worry in my voice. He glances over at me, slightly shocked, before holstering his M9 and assuming an unreadable poker face. "At ease soldier. Some spies had infiltrated us and tried to kill me, luckily I caught wind of their plan and prepared a trap. Anyway, find someone to clean this up." He commands as he walks out of the blood filled room, I go to follow him when one of the bodies catches my eye. I walk forward and see as it is one of my childhood friends, Austin. We had signed up for the military together and were hanging out yesterday. His happy smile, talking about how he can't wait to see his wife.
But now he lays dead before my eyes. As a tear forms on my shocked face, I hear a commanding voice behind me, "What's wrong soldier?" I quickly wipe the tear from my eye as I stand up and assume a poker face, "Nothing sir." And walk out as I take one more glance at the body. 'He was no spy, he was my best friend.'
But I immediately deny it, 'No, that's impossible, he must still be alive, I'll see him tomorrow at training with his smile talking about his wife again.' But I don't sound convinced. Next training, he doesn't show up. 'That's impossible, he must be in his barracks.' I think as I stealthily break formation and enter the barracks. As I am walking towards his bunk, I hear voices and hide under one of the beds, as I look over, I see the same admiral along with a group of people clearing his bunk as I hear him say, "Make sure there is now evidence that he even existed. Send a note to his wife telling her he died on duty."
That is when it set in, he killed him in cold blood. I slowly crawl away and join back into my training formation, but I silently cry as I can barely feel the pain. But there must be a reason why he was killed, I need to find out why.
As I slowly come back to reality, I enter the engineering bay as I have finished my training. Metal sparks fly down as machines are being welded together along with cars, trucks, and weapons. I weave through the people as they glance at me and recognize me.
"Hey, it's good to see your here!"
"Yo, how have you been?"
"Do you know what's for dinner tonight?"
As I reach a computer, I begin to type quickly as tons of code flys past my eyes, I see a box appear as it says, "Admin access granted." 'Code like this is primitive.' I think as I look at the code pass by, but I can't tell if this is me as Kurayami or me as in my old self.
I immediately look for the files of the cameras and click on one. I watch as Austin is walking in the hall, holding a bunch of files in his hand. He turns and walks into the room where he inevitably will meet his end. I close that camera and click on a new one and watch as he enters the room to join a line of people in front of a large man. The admiral stands there as he looks at the four men in front of him.
I watch as he walks around them and begins to talk to them and I curse as they don't have audio. But as he is walking he stops in front of Austin, pulls out his gun and quickly fired as he puts a bullet in each of their chests before they could even react. He grabs the files from each of their bodies and puts it in his suit as I burst through the door, my gun in my hands.
'Those files....could that be why they killed him?'
