Florence sat and watched as Captain Harlow left the room. Several glares were pointed in her direction, including that of Hannah. Everybody began to unpack all of their belongings, when a small girl approached her, "I think it's pretty cool that you figured that out." Came her small voice, "I'm Lily W. I left the bus right before you, and I also happen to be your bunk mate."
Florence, surprised that anyone would dare talk to her, replied, "Oh, hi. As you know, I'm Florence, nice to meet you." The girl smiled in response and began changing.
Soon after, Captain Harlow reentered the room, looking a bit nervous, but still acting tough, "Okay, follow me in single file, in alphabetical order to the dining hall." Most of the girls were able to get in line right away, and the stragglers were scolded. As they walked out, Florence got some interesting stares from the upperclassmen. They seemed excited, but in an odd way, as if they were waiting for something big to happen. Although Florence didn't know what they were looking at her for, she didn't like it. She was sure that word of her following Captain Harlow had spread based on the reactions of upperclassmen when they noticed her trailing behind her line. Once they arrived at the dining hall, Florence received her meal and went to go sit with Lily, and a few first years from other dorms.
"So," began one of the girls who was seated in front of her, "you're the girl who pulled a sneaky on your dorm captain?"
"A sneaky? Well, yes that's me, I'm Florence."
"I'm Tuesday, but you can just call me Tues. It's nice to meet ya."
"Nice to meet you too." The two other girls introduced themselves as Remi and Celeste.
After having some idle conversation, Remi suddenly asked, "So, have any of you heard about the mentor, lackey system?" Everyone except Tuesday shook their heads.
"I've heard about it." She paused for dramatic effect, "It's where third years pick a first year to mentor them, and when more than one third year wants the same first year, they have a paintball battle for her."
"Well those are the basic guidelines, but did you hear about the other rumor?" This time, Tuesday was silent, "Well, I heard that some of the lackeys get kissed."
"No way!" Said Tuesday, sounding more excited than nervous, "That's dope!"
"I thought it was more startling than anything." Lily piped in.
"What about you Florence? You're going to have a few third years fight over you for sure!" Said Tuesday excitedly.
"Well, I don't plan on getting kissed anytime soon. Can I say no to a third year?"
"That's the scary thing," said Remi, "you can't." Florence sighed, annoyed with what she had gotten into.
Several third years walked past them, not trying to hide that they were looking at Florence, "So that's her? Wow, she's prettier than they said." Came one of them loudly.
"Shh!" Said another, "Be quiet, Sarah, she'll hear you!"
"Who cares? As long as the big dogs don't get involved, she's mine for sure." She said confidently, before striding over to Florence herself, "Isn't that right?" Florence's cheeks turned a light shade of pink.
"What- What're you talking about?" She said, slightly frazzled.
"You'll see." Sarah grinned and marched back towards her giggling friends, "Everyone said she was pretty, but she's hella cute too!"
"Oh my gosh, Sarah! You've got guts to just go up to her like that! Someone could've challenged you too a match if they'd seen."
"As long as it's not Harlow or Trapp, I'm good." Hearing her dorm captain's name surprised Florence. She didn't expect her to be a big deal, even though she had been the first person to follow her dorm captain. In fact, it made her nervous that if Captain Harlow wished it, she could beat anyone. The only one who could potentially stop her, was this Trapp person, and Florence really did not want to meet her.
