Daffodil, or Daff as everyone knew her, was a plain Jane. She had brown hair, a fringe, and a slight acne problem. She wasn't thin, she wasn't beautiful, but she loved love more then anything else in the world.
The day she died she had woken up late. She moved into her university room a few days prior (her parents had helped her unpack and then left with a wave) and had since been playing a new romance game she had gifted herself as a moving in present. It was all sorts of fun, and it even had the cool feature of letting you design your own protagonist! She had a little bit too much fun fiddling around with the settings and then watching an idealised version of herself fall in love with a beautiful vampire boy on the debate team. She had just started the route for the shape shifter guy the night before, which was why she overslept.
"Danm I can't believe I'm going to be late to my first day! Oh god-" she was running to the university, clutching at her purse as she went, trying to muffle the rattling sounds from all of her art supplies.
In her hurry she ran out into the road without looking, and the last thing she saw was the front of a large red bus before everything went dark.
"Hey, are you alright?" A sweet voice asked, it was low and kind, sort of like the voice your cute assistant teacher had back in high school, or the boy who would help you with your homework if he noticed you panicking before class.
"Huh? I'm uh-" Daff opener her eyes a crack and then shut them again, the small amount of light that filtered around the umbrella the boy was holding was enough to hurt her eyes, and her head was pounding.
"Oh dear, you really aren't ok, is it alright for me to pick you up? I think you need to go to the nurse!"
Daff started to make a small noise to warn the boy off, she hadn't gotten a good look at him but he didn't sound like he was a weightlifter, and she was surely no feather. Even if he put down his umbrella it would be embarrassing to have him pick her up.
But just as she thought that she felt a strong arm hoist her against a cool chest, and she felt the warm light of the sun be blocked by something. She opened her eyes.
She was in the arms of a handsome boy, his eyes were blood red and his hair was a messy brown mop. It was combed and clean, and smelled lovely, but it looked like he had run his hands through it a few too many times. His smile was small but easygoing, and his eyes had a tinge of concern in them while still seeming cheerful. He looked like he was trying to keep her calm but was internally panicking.
Daff noticed that not only had he picked her up, but her bag was on her lap too and he was still clutching the umbrella over both of their heads, and was cradling her in only one arm.
"I am sorry about this," he promised as he started to stroll through the gardens she now noticed they were in. "But you are in no condition to walk after passing out, you really must go to the nurse!"
Daff blushed furiously, her blue eyes looking up at him appraisingly and feeling a sense of familiarity wander over her. She was too busy sighing over his beauty and the perfection of this meet cute to think on it too hard.
"Oh, I'm sorry how rude of me, I have you in my arms but I haven't even introduced myself yet! I'm Mailik, captain of the debate team," he announced, looking happily at her before his eyes widened. "Oh, that's pretty prideful- I'm only head because the others needed someone to do the paperwork and I offered, well they did vote, but uh-"
Daff suddenly recognised where she remembered him from.
He was the boy she had just spent two days romancing.
