Chapter 18 - The Storm Part 1

Nurses and doctors alike had flooded the receiving bay in preparation for Jessica's arrival. Once the paramedics removed her from the ambulance she was whisked away before either Samuel or Violet even realized what was going on. Doctors lead the two college students into a separate room. Samuel sat on the bed as the nurses began to work on him. Small gasps and whimpers were heard by Violet from the attending group. By now everyone in the emergency department found out how Samuel had gotten his wounds and were honored to help. Violet caught sight of Monroe out by the nurses station, talking to a dark haired doctor. The look of anger and concern was plastered upon his usually calm face. Violet watched as Monroe shook his head, his face forlorn. Monroe noticed Violet looking his direction and motioned her to come over. After sparing a glance toward Samuel, whom looked highly annoyed at the fact that the nurses were pushing painkillers on him, made her way out of the room and over to the large police officer.

"We sent someone out to the address Samuel gave us. We found her, beaten, bloody but alive. That little old woman is a tuff one." Monroe said. "The doctor told me what happened on the way over. Have you heard anything else?"

Violet just shook her head. Since they had just gotten there a few moments before she didn't know anything more than the cop. "WATCH IT WITH THAT! IT FUCKING HURTS!" they heard Samuel scream. "Here let me do it myself." Violet shook her head and went back to the room with Monroe following behind her. The sight that had greeted Violet and Monroe's eyes made them chuckle in the tense and morbid situation. It had taken four nurses to hold Samuel down as another one intravenously gave him some type of medication. Within moments they saw Samuel start to relax and become more compliant and sleepy looking.

"I just gave him some medicine to help with the pain." the nurse said looking over at them. "And hopefully now he won't be so hostile to the nurses that are trying to clean the wounds and stitch him back up."

"I told you I didn't want any of that crap. "Samuel semi snapped in a dazed like voice then laid back onto the pillow. Samuel felt as if he had run a marathon and was exhausted. With the multiple adrenaline spikes, the stress, and now the pain killers and the antibiotics he was just worn out. He couldn't keep his eyes open any longer. He slowly drifted off to sleep with the nurses still working on him.

Violet watched as Samuel fell asleep with a peaceful expression. For a moment the last day seemed to catch up to her too and she took a seat next to Samuel. 'How did all of this happen in a day?' Violet thought to herself. 'Really does seem like a bad criminal documentary.'

Violet's phone rang from inside of her pocket. Taking out the device she looked at the screen. It was her mother. 'Why would she be calling me? She's working tonight.' Then Violet saw the time. 6am in the morning. So much had happened she had lost track of the time. Violet quickly answered the phone and put it up to her ear.

"Violet! Where the hell are you? Are you ok, sweetie? I came home and there were cops blocking off our house and then they told me you, some guy, and a kid were at the hospital. What's going on? Did someone hurt you? Did that guy hurt you? What's his name? There's also some weird girl here with a guy named Mark? Who are they?" her mother was shooting out more and more questions. Too fast for her brain to track, much less answer.

"Mom!" Violet said in a loud stern tone over the phone. "Mom, I'm ok. If you want you can follow that weird girl, who's name is Harmony by the way, up to the hospital and I will explain everything to you when you get here, ok?"

Violet could hear her mother sigh. "Do I need to bring a lawyer?" her mother questioned.

"What? No, mom you don't need to bring a lawyer. Where did that question even come from? That was a bit left field even for you." Violet said to her mother. Slightly chuckling. Her mother chuckled from the other end of the phone.

"I will see you here soon and then you have to explain everything to me. Ok?" her mother said. Violet just agreed with her mother and then hung up the phone. She then decided to see if the head nurse would tell her anything about Jessica's condition. Violet doubted that she would since they were not family but the anxiety that she felt about the little girl made her want to know. Violet walked up to the nurse sitting in the chair looking blankly at the screen. When the nurse noticed her she gave her a warm smile. "Yes? Can I help you?" the nurse said in a warm yet tired voice.

"I'm trying to check on the little girl that we rode up here with. I was seeing if she had woken up yet." Violet responded.

"And who are you to the patient in question?" the nurse said typing on the computer as if she already knew who Violet was looking for.

"I'm a friend of the family. I rode with her and her brother up here in the ambulance." Violet said, doubting that the nurse would give her any information.

"Ok. And do you know the patient's full name?" the nurse asked her. Violet just shook her head. She only knew the little girls first name. She began to kick herself mentally for not paying more attention to the paramedics earlier.

"I know her first name is Jessica, and that her brothers last name is Valentine." Violet said. The nurse shook her head.

"Usually I won't do this because it can get me into a lot if trouble, but seeing as you are mentioned in her medical report as a supportive care giver, I can't you know that her condition hasn't changed and she has been moved to the NICU for further monitoring." Violet's heart sank. She hadn't woken up yet. The nurse looked at the blatant worry on Violet's face. "She hasn't improved, but at the same time her condition hasn't gotten any worse. She is stable for now and is being closely monitored." the nurse told Violet in that sweet voice of hers trying to calm her down and ease her mind.

Violet just nodded and went back to the room that Samuel was in. Sitting in the chair next to him Violet grabbed his hand trying to let him know in some way that she was still there for him. Her eyes felt heavy. Laying her head on the bed that Samuel way laying on she closed her eyes and soon was fast asleep. To the onlookers it was a very sweet picture there in the hospital, something people there didn't get to see often. Monroe saw a nurse go into the room and drape a blanket over Violet who squirmed deeper into it. "Those kids are strong." Monroe said to himself. Silently hoping that everything in the situation would work itself out, but his gut told him it was all just beginning. That things were about to get a lot worse for everyone involved.

Grabbing his cup of coffee that he had liberated from the nurses station he walked down the hall to the spitfire of a little old lady that had just been brought in. Monroe wanted to know what all happened, and he hoped that the woman could give him some answers so he could piece the puzzle together.
