"It was good to see you again," I said to Michael when he dropped Dakota and me off at the school parking lot. "How long will you be in town?"
Michael shrugged, smiling. "I'm going back now."
I nodded, letting out a deep breath. "I wish you could stay," I said, pulling him in for a hug.
He gently patted my back and then released me. "I know. I do, too." A smile lit his lips. "But I'm always a thought away. If either of you need me, you know what to do."
My lips curled into a smile. "Promise?"
He nodded, smiling. "I promise."
Dakota gave him a manly handshake. "Thanks, man. For everything."
Michael smiled. "Just don't forget what's important."
Dakota looked over at me and smiled. "I won't."
"Now," Michael teased, "are you two going to be okay, or do I need to take you both out for pizza again?"
Dakota and I both laughed, knowing it was going to be a standing joke.
