I woke the following day to the sweet song of birds chirping happily outside my window. It was the first day of school; not just any school year, but my senior year of high school. I had looked forward to this day for a very long time.
Faint rays of sunshine shone through my window. Good. It was still early yet.
I quickly showered and dressed in a blue blouse and short skirt, then took extra care blowing my hair dry and applying my makeup. Satisfied. I donned my black heels and rushed downstairs for coffee. I couldn't face the day without my morning dose of the magical liquid brew.
"Morning," Dad said as I walked in. "Coffee's ready."
"Thanks," I replied, already grabbing a cup. "Where's Mom?" I grabbed the Arts and Entertainment section of the paper and sat in what was now my usual seat.
"She's in the shower," he replied, meticulously reading the paper. "She'll be out in a minute."
I nodded, going back to my coffee and the paper.
