"Dad, I'm on my way home," I texted as soon as I left Ms. Burke's class. Dakota followed me down the hallway.
"No, don't," Dad texted back. "You've missed enough school as it is."
"That's not as important as your life," I texted back.
There was a moment's pause and then he texted, "Jess, although I appreciate your concern, I'm a big boy and can take care of myself."
"Not against demons, Dad." I hated to say that, but he needed to realize that this was serious, and he needed protection. "Where are you?"
"Leaving for work," Dad texted back.
"Stay there for a minute," I texted and then said to Dakota. "Do you think that Micah could stay with my father today?"
Dakota nodded, already texting. "But Caleb's not going to like having a babysitter."
"Oh well," I replied. Then I texted Dad, "Micah is going to stay with you today."
There was a pause and then he texted back, "Jess, I don't need a babysitter."
