"Wait!" Mr. Wilson hollered down the hallway after I left. "Jessica, come back."
I turned around and looked at him for a moment, and then hurried back. "I'm going to be late," I said flatly.
"Look," he replied, standing in the doorway. "Cathy came by my house last night but then she left."
I nodded. "Do you know where she is now?"
He shook his head. "No, I don't." Then he lowered his voice. "Jessica, if I knew she was in this much trouble, I wouldn't have seen her."
"Thank you, Mr. Wilson," I replied, knowing he was telling the truth. "If you see her, can you let me or my dad know?"
He nodded. "Yes, of course."
Then I hurried to my next class, checking my phone for any text messages from Michelle on the way.
Nothing.
I put it away and rushed through the empty hallway toward my next class, hoping that I wasn't too late.
