Later, when Dakota pulled his truck into my driveway, I was waiting and met him outside. "Ready?" I asked, skipping down the stairs.
Already out of his truck, Dakota walked around to open the passenger side door for me. "What's the hurry?" He looked up at the house and waved to my father standing in the door, watching through the window. Dad waved back and then walked away.
I shook my head as I climbed into his truck. "Nothing. Dad and I were just talking."
Dakota closed my door and was in the driver's seat a moment later. "What's going on?"
I sighed, looking out the window as Dakota pulled onto the street. "Nothing. We were just talking about New Year's."
"Oh! So, will Caleb be joining us?" Dakota looked hopeful.
I shook my head. "No. That's what started it all." I bit my lower lip and released it. "I mentioned that he bring a date and go out with us for New Year's Eve."
Dakota's head snapped up. "You didn't."
