Chapter 12 - Wishful Thinking

Cameron shook his head, even though Eleanor does act like Melissa, he can't false guess. Cameron looked at Eleanor while she heads back to the hotel. Mai Ke looked at him, "Earth to Cameron." But Cameron ignored him. Cameron was in deep thought, he thought of hugging Eleanor but decided not to.

As Eleanor heads back to her room, she changed back to her own clothes, Luna came out from the shower and saw Eleanor, "You're finally back. Did Cameron drive you back?" Eleanor nodded but she didn't say much.

"I'll shower soon." Eleanor went back her bedroom and thought about Cameron. She rolled around her bed thinking about how would he react if she told him the truth. It was driving her nuts. She went to the bathroom and took a warm shower to calm her down.

That night, Cameron went back to his room and opened up the window, the night air was cool. He loved the feeling of the night breeze blowing on his face. He sat on the couch and thought about Eleanor. Should he call her? Should he text and ask her out when they go back to China?

Cameron was thinking too much but he really wished that Eleanor was Melissa. He wanted to get confirmation but was too afraid. He gave Mai Ke a call and told him to do a background check on Eleanor but Mai Ke replied, "Ha? Right now? I'm in the shower! If you want to do it, do it yourself." Mai Ke hung up and shook his head, "He ignored me then he wanted me to do work for him. Hmph. Serves him right!" He went back to the shower and he was pissed.

"Did he just hang up on me?" Cameron asked himself. He laughed and shook his head, "This kid."

Nevertheless, at least Cameron knew where to find Eleanor. Gathering information about her won't be hard for him at all. Guess, I'll ask Mai Ke to help me when we go back. He called Mai Ke again to explain but Mai Ke hung up again.

"Why is this kid angry at me? What did I do?" He thought to himself.

Few hours later, Cameron took a quick shower then called Eleanor.

"Hello? This is Eleanor. Who am I speaking to?" Cameron words wouldn't come out properly.

"Hello? Are you still there?" Cameron gathered up his courage and asked, "This is Cameron, are you asleep now?" He asked her. Eleanor told him not yet.

"Are you also asleep?" She asked Cameron.

"No, I can't sleep." Cameron told her. Eleanor thought about something to help him go to sleep.

"Do you have any favorite songs? I'll try to sing it and you can try to sleep." Eleanor waited until Cameron gives her the answer. He was silent for a while so Eleanor tried to talk to him.

"Cameron? Are you alright?" Eleanor suddenly saw flashes of lightning and heavy rain. She remembered whenever rain was mentioned, Cameron would act strangely. She tried talking to him, "Cameron, it's okay. It will pass, listen to my voice. It will pass." Eleanor started singing one of Cameron's favorite childhood song, "Little Child." which was also her favorite as well. It is a classic song that many people knew..

Cameron's flashback slowly diminished and his breathing became slower. At that moment when he was afraid, he heard a song that was sung by Melissa when they were young. He calmed down at that moment. He slowly pick up the phone and heard the song he haven't heard in a while. When Eleanor was finished, he closed his eyes and wished that Melissa was with him. But, little did he notice, Melissa was right beside him when he needed her the most.

"Cameron, it's going to be alright. The rain stopped too after I finished singing. It's okay, don't be afraid." Eleanor comforted him and he replied, "Thank you for singing. Your voice was calming. Can you sing that song again while I go to sleep? I really don't want to eat sleeping pill." Eleanor agreed and sang the song until Cameron fell asleep.

After not hearing anything for an hour or so, she hung up. Ah, my throat is so dry, she grabbed a water bottle from the fridge and drank at least half of a bottle. She was finally relaxed but she thought about why Cameron was so afraid of the rain. She shook her head and tried not to think about it.

Even though both of them wished to be together but sometime obstacles can create a wall between the two lovers. It takes great patience and courage to move forward.

Few days later, the research crew headed back for China while Cameron and the others went back to the cruise. They will be arriving in China in just a few days. It was a long heck of a trip but Cameron was grateful for Eleanor. She didn't leave him when he needed someone the most. Cameron was on the top deck gazing at the horizon. Mai Ke was curious what he was up to, "Who are you thinking about?" Mai Ke nudged him. Cameron turned him and said, "I thought you want to ignore me? Why did you suddenly care about me?" Mai Ke was speechless, "I always cared about you. I just didn't want you to ignore me. I was upset yesterday." Cameron rubbed Mi Ke's curly brown hair, "I won't ignore you again, okay?" Mai Ke nodded and smiled, "I guess you're thinking about Eleanor." Cameron sighed, "Yeah, she's been on my mind for a while. My only wishful thinking is that Melissa is Eleanor so we can stay together." Mai Ke looked at Cameron and patted him on the back, "She was always beside you. Even if she's not here in person, she's always watching over you."

Cameron took Mai Ke's word as a encouragement. Maybe there is hope that he can find Melissa. Cameron hugged Mai Ke so suddenly that he dropped his drink, "Thank you, Mai Ke. You always know the best way to encourage me." Mai Ke was confused, "Uh... I was just saying. I didn't mean anything."

But in truth, Mai Ke already knew Eleanor was Melissa, from the first time he saw her on the beach.
