Chapter 51 - I Fear Nothing
Dawn was creeping near at 4 a.m. in the early morning, yet Gu Nanyu was still wide awake.
Unable to sleep, she stared blankly at the windows of the ward and peered through the little gap between the hanging curtains.
It was grim and absolutely pitch-black outside. The eerie darkness seemed to be hiding a menacing beast, ever-ready to barge in through the windows and shred her into a million pieces, before swallowing what was left of her.
The world was a capitalistic place where money wielded the ultimate power; a fact that remained unchanged whether she was reborn or not.
Ultimately, the game of life was still dictated by people with power.
She was no more than a measly ant, crawling miserably under them, with her life at the mercy of their trampling feet.
If Fu Beichen had not arrived just in time to save me, what would have happened to me?
I would simply suffer a more dreadful fate than my previous life.
Pained by the thought, Gu Nanyu closed her eyes to shunt the emotions away from overwhelming her.
However, when her eyes fluttered open again, it shined brightly with a new resolve and clarity.
Since the world only has a place for people with power, fine!
I have nothing; hence I fear nothing!
One day, I shall be the powerful one!
As it was too late, Fu Beichen did not return to the military district and stayed at the hospital tonight.
On this curious night, sleep could not come easily for him as well.
When he was about to fall asleep, he heard the sound of a door opening.
Judging from the direction of the sound's origin, it must be the door of Gu Nanyu's room.
Hence, Fu Beichen quietly exited his room, only to see Gu Nanyu entering Gu Xize's ward.
The nurse had changed her earlier apparel into a one-piece.
If it were not for her distinctive short hair, Fu Beichen would have thought that someone had sneaked in the ward.
Then, he ambled quietly toward Gu Xize's room. The soldiers standing guard on the top floor were his most trusted people. Without his permission, everyone would keep their eyes and lips tightly sealed - never to speak a word about what they saw or heard tonight.
Therefore, Gu Nanyu's identity would be perfectly safe now.
When Fu Beichen arrived at the door of Gu Xize's room, he saw Gu Nanyu use her uninjured left hand to gently caress Little Ze's cheeks.
The benevolence and love emanating from her expression were something he had never seen from her before.
Fu Beichen could not help recalling that ever since he had met her, she had always been unfaltering while wearing that fearless expression of hers.
Perhaps, she would only display her genuine emotions and kindness toward the people she truly cared about.
People's intuition could be extremely accurate.
Especially Gu Nanyu's intuition about Fu Beichen.
She could sense that a pair of eyes were watching her, so she raised her head to look around.
Through the glass on the door, Gu Nanyu noticed Fu Beichen standing outside and peering in.
Thus, she instantly stood up.
And walked to the door.
To be stronger, I must start by overpowering Fu Beichen.
When she exited the room and saw Fu Beichen, she immediately spoke without waiting for him to greet her.
"I can give the information on the USB to you, but on one condition."
Fu Beichen raised his brow and asked, "What is it?"
"No matter what or where, you must not interfere with me or order me around. You must also ensure Little Ze's and my safety."
Gu Nanyu believed that in this whole wide world, only Fu Beichen could keep this promise with her.
She had no idea what he was investigating. Still, she had an uncanny hunch that the results of his investigation were connected to the reason he tormented her in her previous life.
Hence, she must make him promise her this.
Unfazed by her request, he swiftly replied, "Okay."
His answer was short and concise, yet that one word instantly helped lift the gargantuan weight that had been crushing her heart.
Even though Fu Beichen was utterly useless in Gu Nanyu's eyes, he had never broken his promise before.
After that, Gu Nanyu jotted down everything she remembered from the USB with her left hand. It was as nimble and deft as her right hand, since she was born ambidextrous.
The information of these people was not difficult to remember. However, Gu Nanyu could not understand the string of characters at the end of the file.
It must be some sort of unique code to deliver messages without being intercepted. Since Gu Nanyu could not decipher them, she merely tried her best to memorize them.
As she speedily scribbled them down, Fu Beichen furrowed his brows in confusion as he stared at the huge jumble of nonsensical characters being listed down on the paper.
