We make it back to the clearing with Rees nipping at my heels, so my wolf kicks forward with my back legs hard and may have accidentally knocked him in the head.
And the sound he made might have been a huff of laughter.
When we get to where the blanket is still splayed across the grass, I linger by our clothes that are lying next to it. Rees comes up from behind and as he passes by me, he presses into my side. I press back, and we nuzzle each other until we could no longer ignore the timer counting down on our time out here. I am the first to start the shift back to our human forms, but he is the first to finish it.
I dress in a daze, my mind still whirling from things I don't yet understand - but, there is one thing that I realized from tonight.
I'm being lied to, again.
