Chereads / Chicken's Rise / Chapter 18 - Broken promises

Chapter 18 - Broken promises

'Ahh... what...'

"Yughhhhh" my chick voice which I usually restrain came out as a groan, I was just about to test out my new 'mutation' [ Feather Rigidness Control ] when my consciousness was spirited away from my soul.

*DING*

[ Owner's life in critical danger, Soul Power and HP sacrifice initiated to temporarily suspend death ]

Bad.

That is a bad thing.

'Whats my HP at?!?'

[ 8/35 ]

THAT IS REALLY BAD.

[ 7/35 ]

'Oh $#*7'

'QUICK, WHAT'S WRONG, HOW DO I FIX THIS?!?!'

There's only one other time something like this happened... during my second night on this earth, when I had just prematurely broken out of the egg and moved around way too much for a baby.

Food.

I need food and water fast.

I rocket out of my bush, permanently shattering it in the process, I don't have time to care about my decor at the moment. The soul power I had gained from the "geckocide" was insignificant compared to my initial amount, nonetheless the bigger buzz was appreciated when jetting towards my lifeline.

Making my way into the Oasis, I plunged my beak into the water and gulped down as much of the life-saving liquid as I could possibly fit inside my body. I then jumped over to Ol' Raph's fruits and teared into a green apple shaped fruit with orange stripes, why the hell were the fruits so exotic looking in this stupid world? I stuffed the thought deep down and kept gobbling the fruits, I completely finished it, and I felt like I had more space left.... Sorry Raphael, I can't leave this to chance.

Reluctantly I made my way towards the pear shaped fruit I had carefully cut along to annoy Raphael, 'I'm sorry old friend, I'll pay you back this pear's weight in gold one day!', I tore into this one as well, as it turns out I was indeed still hungry.

Two fruit cores lay on the grass, each ground down to the seed, my best friend will not like this.

'What's my hp at now?'

[ 10/35 ]

'Oh thank god...'

The HP value was going up, I was finally out of the woods! I released the huge sigh that had been building up in my throat and exhaled, it's ok... I'm safe....

But what could have caused this? Before I slept I made sure that my vitals were up to par and safe... I must've done something-

Of course.

The mutation.

'Hey Mr.S ... does the mutation usually use up a lot of energy?'

[ Mutations are chosen at random and applied when the Magical Beast has an excess of energy in it's body ]

'Hey system'

[ Yes ]

'Sometimes I really dislike you'

[ Ok ]

Sigh.

Yet again, my inability to synchronise with the system almost caused me to die, I mean I'm sure Mr.S has my best interests at heart... I think... still not sure about that one, but it's extremely worrying that in the future I may perish due to Mr.S imagining that I'm some godly beast!

There were so many issues and problems to unpack within my predicament, however as long as I remained extremely careful and played my cards right then maybe I can nullify the negative effects of Mr.S, I shall exploit and use him to my fullest capability! The wording was a bit worrying but I agree with the contents nonetheless!

With another belly full of Ol' Raph's delicious fruits and veges ( how is it that each time I promise not to consume another fruit, I end up doing so within the next few days... is Raphael cursed or something? ) I waddled over to my bush, it was completely decimated. Spending no time to reminisce I brush off the dirt and leaves I had used to hide my first bottle of repellant and strap it to my back, it was the middle of the night and I needed some sleep, alas I had to go house hunting.

I could set up shop nearby... but then Raphael would most definitely see this mangled bush and inspect this area more closely, it wasn't safe anymore. I took one long look at the oasis that had quenched me, the fruits which had fed me and the bush which had housed me, I'm going to miss you guys.

I walked away, only turning back once to grab a quick snack for the road; I ate two fruits, one more won't make a huge difference right? Sorry Raph, this is the last time, I prom-

You know what? Not going to use the p-word, it's a bad omen for all of Raphkind.

Moonbeams shone through the dense shroud of leaves adorning the trees of the forest, a small yellow chick carrying a plastic spray bottle on it's back while tugging a fruit along could be seen bumbling through bushes and rocks that lay in its path. At times one could see the feathers of the chick turn from a soft yellow into a deep orange and shortly revert back to it's original form, experienced adventurers would recognise this as a fairly rare mutation bird-like beasts could receive. Any who saw and understood this feat would look onto this beast with hunger of a different variety than one would to a regular Ignison Chick, the same hunger reflected in the eyes of the Dryad perched on the treetops, quietly spying on the young beast.
