Chapter 1 - Book 1 - Chapter 1 - Alone

I lay awake with fear and hunger. All I can think about is the sweet smell and taste of food. That and home, where my parents are the food. Being eaten by them, the creatures, the flesh-eating zombies. I also know fear, I fear not only the zombies but of dying. I have lost memories from deprivation of sleep and food, so I no longer remember every memory I have made.

In the morning, I sit up and grab my pack, ready to run from the undead. I ask myself, "what is the point to all of this running?" Everyone was a corpse anyway, lifeless or soon to be. Whether they are on the ground dead, being eaten, fighting until their last breath, or a soulless zombie.

Truthfully, I am scared. Scared to die, to be a brainless beast. So I have to fight, fight for my puny, little life. My loss of life.

"A-Alll-Ali-" I hear the voice behind me, so I turn around. It takes me just moments to recognize the face before me.

"NO!" Bess, an old friend from high school was a zombie, a brainless beast, a monster! She used to hang out with me and another friend, Becky. We all used to hang out at each other's houses or the movies. How could this have happened to her?

Most people believe the creatures are stupid, but I found their intelligence depends on how smart they were in their human lifespan. That's how Bess remembers my name, even if she is someone, something else. They are also more agile than how quickly they were, or ever could be, in their human life.

"Al-Alic" She tries to 'hug' me, to grab me, to rip me apart and eat me. "Alicia-A-A- my, my, my..." I look into her soulless eyes, only seeing me as her next meal. She hesitates for a moment, "m-my fr-frie-friend," she waits again for a response, she hesitates, "b-best friend." I look away as she stumbles over a young girl on the grass, seeing a new opportunity for food, and bites down, tearing away the flesh that's left on the still body.

"Run," run now I tell myself. I grab my pack and dash. I run to the closest building, a store, I need to get more food. Out of breath, I grab as much food I can handle; canned food so I can take it with me and will last longer.
