Chapter 26 - Don't be a monster

"You, Mae. You just opened a new world of the unknown." Elvis marvelled at his new found motivation.

Mae's face transitioned from confusion to a look of horror at the word 'world of unknown'."

"But you can fix me, right?" Mae needed some sort of confirmation.

Elvis shook his head, he was puzzled as to why anyone would want that. She was a living, breathing powerhouse, all she needed was practice to control it.

"Why did you shake your head?" She misunderstood his actions.

"Many in your shoes would have jumped on this opportunity you are blessed with, all you need is guidance actually." Elvis concluded.

"I am normal." Mae stressed, "A normal Princess, living a normal boring and table-turning life."

"Up until now." Elvis cut in. "It seems whatever is going on with you got awakened after you clocked eighteen years of age." He picked one of his books which contained things which could trigger a bloom of powers.

Looking over his shoulder, Mae wanted a glimpse of what he read, "Is the answer inside there that could help me?"

"Mae just stay put, would you please behave like a real Princess." He blocked her view with a change of his position.

"Screw being a Princess." She cussed, suddenly angry she was told how to act.

The lamp which sat on the table shook then proceeded to levitate, so did several vials in the shelf.

"Uh! Elvis?" Skun whimpered in fear at what he was witnessing at the moment.

Looking behind him, his eyes went twice it's size at what he saw, then his attention was directed at Mae who had that same eerie look while they were at the cave.

Finally he realised what might be a force which could activate her powers. He proceeded to take the softer approach, the only way that would guarantee the safety of his vials.

"Mae, I was wrong, but you need to control how you feel or you could hurt those who you love or love you. Don't be a monster they would fear." He hoped what he said would go through to her.

Cautious of his vials still floating in the air, what puzzled him was his inability to use his power against whatever force that was within Mae's control or the other way around.

"You aren't a monster, you're my cute little Princess." He tried to reach deep within her inner heart.

"Mae, it's me–Skun, your best pal and friend, and I seriously need a patting right about now." Skun tried his luck, he had always used this to get close to her during those years of bonding.

'Skun?' Elvis communicated to him telepathically.

'Woah! This means it still works huh?' Skun shook his head at how strange it felt now that he could communicate verbally.

'Yes and what do you think you are doing bringing that up?' He got straight to the point.

'You would see.' He smiled, his attention on Mae, his hands open wide so he could hug and get patted by her.

Suddenly Mae's temper got under control once again, the vials falling.

With the snap of his fingers, he was able to slow their movements before they made contact with the floor. "That was a close call."

"Who could resist how cute you looked." Mae cooed, her hands eagerly ruffling his hair , her emotions in check.

"You scared us back there." Skun whined, taking a huge whiff of her perfume in the process.

"It was more than a scare to me," Elvis mumbled, looking around to make sure everything was in their respective places. "It was my life's work on the line back there."

"I– I am sorry for causing a ruckus again." Mae walked towards the couch, she rested her back on it, making a mental note of the painted stars on the ceiling.

"It's not your fault, you still have no control of it, that's why." Elvis forced a laugh.

"You don't need to pretend to be alright with all this in my presence, you would just make me feel more bad than I already was." She let out a huge sigh.

Getting up, her lips drew into a thin line, "You know what?" She turned to face them.

She could see it, a bit of fear in their eyes, they were scared of the unknown–her. "I need to get going. Elvis do look for an appropriate sleeping chamber for him, he isn't a huge dragon anymore, so he should be able to fit into a room." She laughed but her eyes gave away her true emotions.

"Mae..." Elvis had begun when she raised her hand to stop him from saying any more than he wanted to.

"I am fine, I just need rest." She didn't just say this just to convince them both but also herself. *So you wouldn't need to worry about anything."

With that, she made her way to the door, slamming it behind her, wiping away the tears she had been keeping at bay.

"You can do this. You are not a monster, just a normal average eighteen year old." She chanted quietly as she walked the hallways to her Chambers.

–––––––––––

"Welcome Your Highness." The guards at her door greeted with a bow,

"I hope your chat was eventful?" The guard on the right spoke out, noticing the slight frown on her face.

The other on the left, shook his head at the one on the right for his inquisitive questions, mouthing the words: "You really do have a death wish."

"Would you two stop?" She held her head as a slight headache crept in. "I would be taking a nap, so no one should disturb me. Got that?"

"As you wish it's done." The guards reassured with a firm voice.

Pushing on her door, she staggered into her room, slamming the door behind her; the only thought in her head–sleep.

Kicking off her slip on, she failed to take note of the neatly folded paper on her nightstand.

"It's a goodnight world now." Mae said, with her chin sinking comfortably into the pillow.

Feeling her way to switch off the lamp, she felt something oddly out of place, "How did this get in here?" She pulled on it, turning around to face upwards.
