Chapter 1 - Finding out

Pregnant. The word is like a neon sign, big and bold on the screen of the test. There are no complicated faded lines that leave room for uncertainty, the possibility that it's not true.

Pregnant. The word stares at her, unchanging. It's not that Christen doesn't want to be a mom, she just didn't expect that it would happen so soon. When she'd picture her life it was always in the order of marriage then baby, maybe a dog in between. She'd never pictured getting pregnant at 24, after a one night stand where she can't even remember the persons name.

She continues to sit on the edge of the tub, just looking at the test in her hands, thinking about what she's going to do. In her head her thoughts swirl and she beings to run through the opinions that are open to her, she immediately decides that abortion is simply not an option for her. Despite that this is an unplanned pregnancy, she can't help but already feel immense love for the life inside of her.

As she continues to make plans in her head she lifts her shirt,!looking down at her still flat stomach, feeling a sense of calm wash over her. I can do this, she thinks. With her mind made up she grabs her phone and calls the most important person in her life, besides the new life growing inside her.

Sitting at her desk, just 10 minutes from where Christen is, Julie is grading the the history papers of her 11th AP US History class. Julie sighs at errors she sees in the papers.

She picks up her phone and hears a familiar voice. "Can you talk?" Christen asks.

Christen and Julie have been best friends since they were in elementary school. Since then, they'd been practically attached at the hip, only parting ways to attend college.

"Sure," Julie responds taking a break from grading. "What's up?" Christen takes a deep breath and Julie can hear a sense of hesitation from Christen.

"Jules'" Christen whispers. She stops and Julie can tell that some thing is bothering Christen.

"Chris, whatever it is, I'm here. I'm always here."

Christen takes a deep calming breath," I'm pregnant," she says so quietly that Julie almost misses it.

Julie is shocked, "Are you sure? Maybe you're just late."

"I'm sure," Christen answers, reaching for the pregnancy test, looking at the words that have changed her life.

"What are you going to do?", Julie asks, knowing about the one night stand Christen had.

"I've only just taken the test and you are the first person I told. But I think I want to keep it," Christen pauses, " Actually I know I want to keep it."

Julie responds, "Okay. I get to be godmother right?" She knows that despite this not happening the way Christen would like, Christen is going to be a wonderful mother and she will be the best godmother there ever was.

Christen sighs with relief, knowing that she has the support of her best friend. "I don't know what I would do with out you Jules. I'll let you go back to your work. We can talk more later when you get here."

"Okay, I'll call you once I am leaving the school," Julie responds.

Once she hangs up her phone, Christen sits and gathers her thoughts before getting up and heading downstairs to wait for Julie. As she walks down the line hallway she walks past the spare bedrooms in her new home. She starts to think about which one will be the nursery and what it will look like. She slides a hand under her shirt, gently rubbing her thumb across her still flat stomach. "I'm going to do the best I can," she promises. "We're gonna be okay."

She makes it down to the kitchen, thankful that with this unexpected, but wonderful surprise, she has a well paying job in advertising that allowed her to buy this three bedroom home with plenty of room for a baby. She grabs a juice from the fridge and heads towards the living room to wait for Julie.

Across town Julie packs up her desk and heads to her car. She picks up her phone, hits Christen's name and waits for her to pick up.

"Hey, I'm just leaving the school now. I should be at you place soon," Julie says.

"Door is unlocked Jules, so come right in."

Fifteen minutes later she arrives at Christen's place. Walks in and says, "Lucy, I'm home!"

Christen chuckles as she hears her friend enter her house. She walks to the front door to greet her friend. The moment Julie sees her, she gets pulled into a bear hug.

Suddenly Julie releases her, "Oh, sorry, I don't want to squish you and peanut," Julie says.

Christen laughs at her goofy friend and pulls her back into a bear hug.

They walk to the kitchen together, to figure out what to have for dinner. Julie begins to move around the kitchen, looking in the cupboards and refrigerator. Without pulling anything out of either, she turns to Christen and says, "why don't we order pizza to celebrate?" Christen moss in agreement and grabs the menu for their favorite pizza joints.

After calling in their order for a cheese pizza, Julie suddenly turns toward Christen, "Well, let me see," she says excitedly, jumping up to sit on the counter as Christen looks at her with an amused grin.

"You can't see anything yet," Christen chuckles.

"I don't care. I want to see my little niece or nephew."

Christen smiles at her friends excitement. She lifts her shirt to reveal her stomach and watches as Julie hops down off the counter, crouching in front of her.

"Hi, peanut, I'm you Aunt Julie, I love you" she coos, patting Christens stomach. "You have the best mommy in the whole wide world. I know it's true because she is the best friend I've ever had."

"Hey! Don't give them these high expectations of me," Christen chastises.

"Sorry, but I cant lie to them. You will be the best mom," Julie says as she pulls her friend into another hug.

"Well thank you for believing in me," Christen mumbles.

"I've always believed in you. This is no different."

The doorbell rings and they break apart. Julie heads to the door to get their pizza. She meets Christen in the living room.

They start eating and start to catch up on other things in their lives. Julie tells Christen about the date she went on last weekend. It won't lead to anything, Julie says, but it had been a fun night getting dinner and drinks with a girl she'd met on Tinder.

"Well I'm glad you had a good time," Christen says when Julie finishes recounting the date.

"Thanks," Julie responds, grinning. "What are you going to do now? Do you have a doctor's appointment set? Have you gotten prenatal vitamins? Have you called your parents? Who else have you told?"

Christen shakes her head laughing, "One question at a time. I'm going to call the doctor in the morning. No I haven't gotten prenatal vitamins yet . No I haven't called my parents or told anyone else. You are the only person that knows."

"When are you going to tell your parents?" Julie questions.

"I think I will tell them after my first appointment. That way I can give them a sonogram when I tell them. Hopefully they will be happy."

"You're handling this so well, I don't think I could be as together as you are right now. I am so proud of you. Do you want me to come to your appointment with you?"

"You don't have to."

"I know but I want to be there to support you, as long as you want me there."

"I want you there," Christen says firmly. She pauses, Julie giggles pointing out that She is already so maternal with her hands resting gently on her stomach. She laughs, just now realizing that she's had at least one hand on her belly the entire time they've been talking.

Christen turns and lays down with her head in Julie's lap.

"Are you scared?" Julie asks, running her fingers through Christen's hair.

"I'm fucking terrified," She admits. "But it's probably good to be terrified when you have your first baby."

She falls asleep early as Julie plays with her hair. Julie lets her sleep for a bit before carrying her upstairs to her bedroom, gently laying her down in bed and climbing in on the other side where she's spent many nights sleeping over.

"The baby and I are so lucky to have you as a best friend and godmother," whispers Christen sleepily.
