Chapter 76 - The Living Defense [Chapter 76]

Vex and I quickly rush down the hallway, and we soon enter a new time period.

"Time Of Awakening"

We look to each other, both clearly confused. Vex speaks.

"So, that means we are currently in the 'Time of Awakening'?"

He mumbles, starting to run further down the hallway. I follow behind him; soon approaching a wall of gray, see through, energy. We see more bookshelves passed the translucent wall, but look to the one beside us.

"Time Of Awakening 999:323"

Vex seemingly freezes, his eyes fixated on the date. He darts his eyes passed the wall of gray energy and clenches his fist.

"Damn, it's almost a new age."

I tilt my head, looking through the gray energy as well, noticing the hallway of books seemingly never ends. Before I can speak up, Vex looks to me.

"On the way down here, I noticed everytime the date was nine-nine-nine and three-three-three, a new age would begin. Meaning, ten bookshelves passed that wall of energy, we can see what the new age will be."

Vex holds out his hand, pushing it slightly through the energy, then quickly retracting it.

"But the warning when we first entered the building is what I'm hesitant of, we still have no idea of what price it's referring to."

I sigh and walk beside Vex and stare through the barrier.

"Does it matter?"

I mumble, Vex quickly snapping his eyes to me.

"Of course it does! We have no clue what this place is, or what rules have to be followed! There must be consequences if we don't pay, but we don't know what to pay either! This doesn't seem like a trick, this wall is probably here as a warning."

Vex exclaims. I look over to him and smile lightly.

"A warning? I'm not scared of some extensive library with a vague warning."

I push myself forward using my calf, quickly moving through the portal. Vex grabs my wrist, but the gray energy vanishes as a majority of my body goes through.

Vex stares, wide eyes, for several seconds. He jerks back, looking behind us and breathing heavily. He quickly clenches his fist and stares back.

"M-maybe it was just a marker to show where the current day was?"

He mumbles, slowly calming down. I roll my eyes and walk forward a few bookshelves and reach the new time period.

"Time Of Calamity"

I stare at the time period, almost at a loss of words. Vex walks over to me, once again freezing when he sees the words. While we stand still, suddenly the structure shakes violently. Vex glares to me and shouts.

"I told you! We don't know the rules of this place!"

I roll my eyes, easily keeping my balance in the strange chaos. The vibrations and shaking of the entire structure doesn't even disturb the books on the shelves. As the shaking stops, we hear heavy breathing back down the tunnel.

We both stare down the tunnel, waiting for something to appear, but suddenly the breathing stops. For several seconds, we sit in silence. Then suddenly there's a heavy exhale behind us. Our heads quickly spin and stare down the extending path. Vex suddenly starts yelling.

"Shit! If there's something in here at the same level as the enemies outside, our friends are going to die!"

Vex quickly grabs me, and jerks slightly. He pauses.

"We can't use magic."

He whispers to himself. His eyes widen, clearly starting to panic. In the blink of an eye, he grabs my wrist and starts running back down the tunnel. We run as fast as we can, quickly passing by thousands of years of history.

We soon arrive back in the main room, and to our dismay, see the 3 strange beasts that were on display are no longer there. Vex quickly pulls out his sword, and so do I with a gleeful smile.

"Hopefully these beasts will be tougher than the enemies outside the Nexxus."

I mumble, feeling myself get excited. Vex growls and points his sword down the hallway that Warren and Kain travelled.

"Meet up with them, make sure they're okay. I'm going up to find Blankk and Azeroth."

I laugh and nod in response, instantly sprinting down the hall and readying my sword. Within a matter of seconds, the first beast comes within sight. It's the one with the six different color eyes.

I tilts its head and stares at me, a name and level becoming visual.

I smile, feeling my heart racing.

"You'll level me up a lot!"

I shout, feeling my grip tighten as I lunge toward the creature. As my blade starts to slam against its face, its head splits open. A long black arm reaches out and blocks my sword with no difficulty. The tall beast with forward facing black horns emerges from the distorted, and pulled flesh.

I manage to rip my sword away and jump back, It That Stalks quickly stumbling back as its face pulls back together. I stare up to the newly summoned enemy.

I grit my teeth and ready my sword, watching both of the strange creatures. It That Stalks suddenly jumps into the wall, vanishing into a burst of black smoke. The smoke travels further down the hallway, clearly towards Warren and Kain.

It That Kills lowers itself onto all fours and screams. A high pitch scream, vibrating the air around me, seems to freeze my blood. I shake my body slightly and compose myself.

"Alright, let's do this!"

I shout, quickly jumping towards the monster. It once again grabs the blade of my sword, this time slamming me against the wall.

[-35,000,000 HP]

[+125,000 HP]

I grit my teeth and drop to the ground.

"Flurry: X84!"

I slam my sword against its outstretched hand over and over, barely chipping the bone-like fingers. I barely pull my sword away as the beast clamps its long fingers down. It draws its arm back, then thrusts its long sharp nails towards me.

I jump above its hand, narrowly dodging the nails. I then spin and slam my blade towards its fingers as hard as I physically can.

With a booming crack and crunch, I take off the creatures pinky finger. The beast reaches for me with the other hand, but I push myself away by putting the tip of my sword to its palm and pushing as hard as I can.

I launch back over thirty feet and slide across the tile floor.

"God of Slaughter!"

I shout, but as Vex said, nothing happens.

Shit, without buffs, this fight will be incredibly difficult.

I think, keeping a close eye on the monstrosity before me.
