Chapter 17 - Friends

It was a hot, sticky day. Me and my friends all agreed to have a proper picnic far in the country land, and we'd all bring all sorts of food and drinks. I took my basket, and filled it up with whatever I had at home: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, left over pie from yesterday, some iced coke and cookies.

I got into my car, and started driving off, with Alyssa next to me on the front seat.

Alyssa had a small basket. "So, what'd you bring?" I asked.

"Oh, I've got some yogurt cups, strawberry lemonade, chocolate biscuits, salad and some ice-cream."

She looked at me, as if waiting for an answer. I nodded, smiling.

When we finally arrived in the country land, all our friends were already there. It seemed like they took the last empty place. This place was crowded, and noisy, with pets and children running around, bumping into people. It was good that they got a place at least, but it wasn't good that it was right next to the woods nearby. I was facing my friends, and my back was on the woods, so I didn't worry about it too much. We all started taking out our food, and we started talking. Everyone around us were talking very loudly, and we could hear every word they said. It wasn't comfortable for us, but I tried my best to enjoy it. As the time passed by, people started leaving. The sun was going down, and I thought we'd go home now.

"We're going home now?" I asked hopefully.

"Now? Of course not." said Janine.

I was getting worried, because it was getting dark, and street lamps barely worked here, and there were only around a few people around us.

"Guys, let's go home, I'm tired," I tried telling them.

"No, Emily, I don't wanna leave now. Just a bit more." said Alyssa, pleadingly.

So I couldn't go home now. The only source of transport was my friend Tiara's car. I thought about calling an Uber and driving home myself, but an Uber this late would be too risky.

At around 9:50 pm, I was getting anxious. There was no food left, and there were literally no people anymore, and only two street lamps were working.

"Guys, come on, let's go now. Please?" I asked.

They all looked at each other.

"Okay, Emily, since you won't stop pleading," said Tiara.

"Yeah, let's get packing," added Janine.

I was relieved, and started picking up my spoons and plates, and anything left of mine. I was looking for my phone, when Janine froze. Everyone next to her froze too.

No, it couldn't be. I couldn't dare look behind me. It was too risky. I might get a heart attack. What if there was some vile creature staring back at me?

I stopped what I was doing. I gained as much courage as possible, and looked behind me. I wish I didn't. There was an at least 7 foot tall, skinny creature right in front of me, its face just like a mans, but - paler. So much paler. His eyes were so big and full of curiosity. His face was skinny, even like a skeletons, his bones poking out. His eyes were narrowed on my face, looking directly into my soul. He was wearing a black shirt with black pants. He had black, long hair, which looked strange with his pale, dry skin. I didn't dare move a muscle, and was getting ready to die.

"Looking for this?" he said, holding up my phone. His voice was deep and scary. He gave a creepy long smile. "Don't lose it again, yes?" He reached out his hand, holding my phone. His long, spidery and skeleton white hands freaked me out.

I grabbed the phone as fast as possible, without saying anything, and made a run for it. Seeing what I was doing, all my friends, too, ran. I looked back, the man was sprinting towards us, in a strange way. He didn't look exactly like he was running. More like fast walking. His legs to long, it made it look weird. He walked so fast, with his hands straight downwards. He was fast walking just like Enderman in Minecraft. His face was serious. Creepy, actually. He looked only at me, for some reason, not smiling nor frowning, his face just solid frozen.

I looked back, and the car was in front of me. All of my friends got inside, screaming, and I was the last one to get in. The man was two feet away, and just when I slammed the door and locked it, his face came right up. he leaned his face against it, his eyes wide, smiling, right at me. I leaned back, screaming, and the man mouthed, "Why don't you say 'Thank You'?" in a creepy way. We drove off, leaving the man or whatever that creature was, alone in the darkness of the country land.

When I got home, scared and exhausted, I decided not to take a shower and just go straight to bed. I slumped down on my bed, and fell asleep. I woke up at 1 am to a sound of someone laughing or cackling, actually. I opened my eyes, and, to my horror, the same creature was there, smiling, and he said "Say 'Thank you' next time, Emily, okay?"
