Chapter 1 - Late start

RINGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!

"Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit!!!" James shouted in panic as he hurriedly gathered his supplies from where he had been sitting earlier in the library at his school: Jack Henry Middle School. He paused a moment, and saw that many people were glaring at him.

"Shhhhhh!" A girl whispered angrily.

"Sorry" he apologized awkwardly. Everyone stared at him as he hurried to his first class that he was already late for, some shook their heads at him on his way out. He ran down the hallway quickly to his science classroom where he brushed his brown hair out of his green/grey eyes and slowly but cautiously opened the door and tiptoed to where he sat next to his best friend Rebecca as they got ready for the bell to get to next period.

"Bro, where were you?" She asked. "Teach is rip into you for being late" she told him.

"I know, i know!" He said defensively, "I was studying really hard in the library before first block and I guess I got drowsy and fell asleep."

She gave him a pained look and said "dude you need to get a handle on your hypersomnia. You're 16 and still in middle school." She swept her hands out in front of her gesturing at everyone else leaving the room. "Everyone besides me is at least 13, you've failed out of almost every class in 3 years."

"I know!" He said, frustrated "I keep trying and for the things I don't fall asleep in, I want to care about but I can't ". He rubbed his hands over his hands over his face in exasperation. "Well, I'll see you" he told her waving goodbye.

"Bye" she said softly, looking back at him for a second before walking out.

He started walking slowly to the door hoping the teacher wouldn't notice him, but no such luck.

"Where do you think you're going young man?" Teach said. We all call him Teach because he has never once told anyone his name. Everyone is a little confused as to how he got hired in the first place. One person theorized that he's the relative of one of the school board members, and they felt sorry for him so they hired him. That was the most plausible in James' mind.

"You thought that you would slip out of class after coming in late without me noticing?" He asked without looking up from some papers he was looking at.

'Uh, crap' he thought "yyyeeess?" He stammered, realizing too late that it was a bad answer.

"You know that slacking out of class isn't going to get you anywhere in life, mr. Greenpaw". He told him. Putting down the papers and looking at him with lazy hooded eyes. His hands were settling into his suit pockets, and his weird green mixed with black eyes stared at him from his wire frame glasses.

"Let me ask you something." He said "where do you see yourself in ten years?"

James pondered the question a bit, tilting his head slightly.

"I don't know" he replied uncertainly, gazing at Teach "I guess I always assumed that....." James trailed off as he drew a blank to what he wondered he was thinking.

"Assumed what?" Teach asked with dark eyebrows raised in question and a look of curiosity in his eyes. "What did you assume, mr. Greenpaw?"

"I..." James started saying, then coming up with nothing. "I don't know" he said finally. There was silence in the class for a few moments. Until kids started streaming in for second block.

"Well!" Teach said finally "mr. Greenpaw, when you do figure it out come find me." He then sighed and stood up straight. "For now goodbye." James could have sworn that he looked disappointed for a moment but then it was gone as soon as it had appeared.

He quickly exited the classroom, going as fast as his legs would take him. When he crossed the threshold from the class to the hallway, he thought he saw for a second out of the corner of his eye a woman who clearly was into role playing as she had horns and cat eyes. But her cat eyes appeared to be flecked with red and black and grey. He turned his head out of shock and when he turned to truly look, she was gone. He shook his head and passed it off as trick of the light.

'Get out of your head Jame, you're going crazy' he thought to himself. He turned on his heel and went to his locker and grabbed the supplies he needed and ran to his next class which was history.

'Sigh'

The demoness stepped out of the shadows she'd been watching the boy from, smiling slightly. "Our lord will have his satisfaction finally". She said to herself
