Chapter 3 - Deserted

A crowd had gathered around the one and only gate leaving the compound. I was being dragged, my body feeling helpless and limp. I knew what I had done. I knew it was wrong. But did I really deserve this?

He pulled my roughly to my feet, a look of disgust spread across his cold, gruesome face. I was scared, but I made sure to keep it from my eyes. I wouldn't let them know I was scared. I would be strong, this time, they would know my strength. This wasn't the end. I was being banished, but I was not being sentenced to death. I'm smart, I can live out here. A new, small sense of confidence gathered in me.

The gates opened, creaking outward. People gasped. They always did that, I never understood why. Maybe because they never thought they'd see it again. The cold wasteland in front of us. Reeking of death and misery.

I was being pushed now, out to the closet to the gate I could get without going out. they grabbed my wrists and started to rattle off the same thing they always said.

"Pamela Baker. Condemned to be shunned, for the stealing of medical supplies, aware we are low. May the world may have mercy on her, and bring her the swiftest of deaths.

For the rest of our generations, we must continue this law."

I could see him, standing their, tears blurring his eyes, casting a sheen over them. He was still in his lab coat.

My lips parted, as I was shoved violently in the side. "I'm sorry," I mouthed to him. It only made him worse. He started to come towards me, but I shook my head.

"Live to finish what I couldn't," I yelled to him.

I was outside the gates.

The creaking began again. The gates closed with a huff.

Silence, loneliness, and desertedness left me.

I was alone now, and forever.
