'Uhh, is your mom going to allow you to bring a ghost home?' Lacie questioned as she struggled to suppress a laugh.
"That wasn't my mom. She--she's just someone that bathes and feeds me." Galen's voice grew weaker and weaker as he spoke.
'Yes, yes, I see. A total stranger to this milk baby, eh?'
"Shut up or I'll force you to." He turned his head away while leading her.
Lacie wordlessly cocked an eyebrow as she stared at his back. His name sounded oddly familiar to her ears, like she had read it at least a hundred times before.
'That quack Roman doctor? Did I go back in time? No, he looks nothing like the quack.'
If it wasn't that Galen, then which Galen was it? After foraging in her mind for a bit, she finally realized that she was staring at the protagonist of a D-rate novel that she read a week ago. The tsundere attitude, ruby red eyes, and hair as black as midnight all matched up.
And Lacie? Well, she just happened to be his goldfinger weapon.
Mindlessly staring at a computer screen full of business lingo while the sounds of fingers hitting mechanical keyboards had been her life for years. She got up late and ate something that could barely be justified as fit for human consumption as breakfast. Before Lacie even finished getting set up at her bland, grey cubicle, several coworkers pushed their work to her.
Rinse, repeat.
Her only solace was the worlds she would visit late in the night through the perspective of characters much more talented and beautiful than her. But that was all Lacie thought she would get: a visit. Never in her wildest dreams would she have thought she would become a permanent resident of one of the books she read.
Not that Lacie was particularly happy about it. Although her life was hard, it was hers. She wasn't robbing someone else's body -- or soul, in this case? -- to take on the world. As pathetic as her existence was, it was one that belonged to her alone.
