Could this be the result of the fact that medicine in this world is virtually non-existent? Healing magic is so common and so readily available that any major disease would be curable by a healer from any normal town, so it's not as if diseases are rampant.
At the same time, this has caused medical technology to never progress. I've observed this before, but my previous thought of this being a medieval society was incorrect. This society, though based in a more medieval setting, is far closer to that of current Earth levels of technology, if not a bit more advanced in certain regards. The existence of magic has caused technology to not progress in the same way as it did on Earth, thus tools like x-ray and an MRI do not exist here.
