Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Enemies?

I had just killed a man. And I had no idea how I had done it.

My body just moved on it's own. I did not remember ever learning those movements before. It was almost as if I had been trained in martial arts, but I knew that to be impossible. I had never taken a class like that in my life. And yet, my body just knew how to move. It was just another mystery to add to the pile.

As I looked down at the amn I had just murdered, a strange feeling overcame me. I didn't feel... remorseful? I felt strange, but not upset? I was... excited?

I didn't know what to think. I had just killed a man, shouldn't that have affected me in some way? Shouldn't I be horrified? But I feel... almost accomplished. I was disgusted with myself. What had this man done to deserve death? Well, to be fair, he did try to kill me, so maybe he did deserve it? I didn't know, it was all too confusing.

Again, my thoughts were interrupted by another enemy hurtling themselves towards me. This time they were barehanded. I took a step back and readied myself. I paused for a moment, looking at my stance. It was too good, where had I learned it? From movies? But I couldn't finish my train of thought with an enemy in front of me. I waited for her to attack first. I had some reservations about hitting a woman, but then, I had just killed somebody.

She took the first swing, aiming for my chin. I ducked and swiftly moved my fist into her stomach, twisting it for extra force. She grunted and fell to the ground, clutching her stomach. She didn't stay there for long. She immediately got back on her feet and threw another punch, this time at my face. I dodged again and stuck out my leg. She tripped over it and landed face first on the floor. I laughed, but this only antagonized her further. In a blind rage, she tore herself from the ground and rushed for my legs, head bent down, arms out in front of her, ready to topple me. She managed to grab me, but I only snatched the the collar of her clothes and placed my other hand on her belt. I then lifted her from her position, and up and over my head. Finally, I slammed her on the ground with as much force as I could manage in my position. She hit it with a "THUMP!", and I smiled to myself. She didn't attempt to get back up, so I moved on.

I looked at the fighting going on all around me and tried to find a proper opportunity. Every way I looked there was a pirate engaged in battle with a man in green. Nobody seemed to need help. That was until I saw the man from earlier pinned on the ground by a very large, muscular monster of a man. I rushed towards them, and grabbed the monster by the back of his shirt, lifting him off my newfound friend.

The man from earlier breathed a, "Thank you," and picked himself up off the ground. Then we both turned to the monster man.

After he had regained his wits, he turned to look at us with a nasty snarl on his face. My new comrade and I looked at each other, and then, with movements perfectly in synche, we both drove our fists into the monster's stomach. He flew backwards and hit the floor with another satisfying "THUMP", and I was surprised at the sheer force of our punches. We then turned to each other once more and grinned like two big idiots.

"So you're a fighter after all, huh?" he said.

"Apparently," I responded.

He nodded then offered his hand for a shake, "I don't think I've introduced myself yet, the name's Warner."

I took his hand and said, "Well, in case you've forgotten, mine's Asher."

Then, as if to remind us there was still a fight going on, a man went flying between us and hit the wall on the opposite side of the room. I was shocked and turned to see what could have possibly thrown a grown man so far.

Apparently, we also had a giant on our side.

After that, the fighting went on for another thirty minutes or so until the men in green finally retreated, leaving behind their dead for us to clean up. I was sweaty and exhausted, but also strangely exhilarated from the fight. I still had reservations about killing that man, but I had other things to worry about at the moment.

I saw the captain and Warner talking, so I went over to them and asked, "Who were those guys?"

The captain responded, "Those were some of our old-time enemies, who're working on the same sides of the war."

"Why did they attack your ship?"

"Probably after our loot, no doubt."

The captain and Warner continued their conversation with serious looks on their faces, and I backed away to look at the aftermath of the battle. I noticed a couple of guys dragging bodies away and moved over to help them.

Why would those men attack this ship now? Surely they must have known they were outnumbered, and they lacked any sort of advantage in that fight. The captain's ship was the perfect defense from what I could tell. And I thought they only stole from the rich? Maybe that was exclusive to these particular pirates. I wasn't really sure what to think. In just the past couple hours I had traveled in time and space, been involved in a life or death situation, and killed a man. Frankly, I was overwhelmed. I didn't think I had the energy to sort out my moral codes at the moment.

The group dragging the bodies was lining them up along the far wall of the great room. That was what I decided to call it for now. When they had finished, a man from the back of the room called out, "Ready?"

I didn't know to what he was referring, but everyone else screamed their consent and so did I. Then, without any further warning, the wall covered in dead and unconscious bodies opened up to space. I gasped, thinking I was about to lose all my oxygen and be sucked out in a vacuum. But nothing happened. I was fine.

I turned to the captain, who was smilin ggv at my reaction. I ignored his grin, "Why are we not being sucked into space?" I asked.

"There's a forcefield surrounding the ship, that's what keeps us from getting sucked out."

I nodded, still awestruck, and watched as bodies were pushed over the edge of the ship and into space. I wondered just then how many bodies were floating around in space out there. I shuddered at the thought of it.

The captain stopped watching and turned to me again, "So," he started, "What do ya think? After fighting with us, have you decided to join our cause?"

"Join your cause?"

"Yes. Would ya like to become a pirate?"
