Chapter 1 - One fall day

In the morning one fall day, I went to visit my grandma in the hospital. Once I get to the hospital I see my dear old grandma lying down in her bed in a white room, and some rose flowers wilting away that I got her from last time I visited. She looks weak and fragile but also peaceful in a way.

I walk up to her, "Hey grandma," I said in a quiet voice, "You awake?"

I look over at her little monitor to see that the little line was still moving up and down. She replied in a weak voice. Almost like it was about to disappear forever.

"Oh yes, dear. I'm awake."

I gave her a small gentle smile, happy that she was still around and kicking.

"How are you, grandma?" I ask.

"Oh same old."

I giggle a little bit but I still give her that gentle smile.

"You know what I would like right now?" she said looking at me, "Some candy from the candy shop."

I smile and reply "That place again? You know you shouldn't eat that stuff. The nurse said so."

She replied, "Oh, hush it, will ya? They don't have to know."

I giggle and start walking to the door, "Do you want the same thing?" I asked.

"You know my favorite,"she replied with a little smirk.

After that, I walked out of the room towards the candy shop.

The candy shop was a place my grandma always loved, she would always take me there when I was a little kid, but now with my grandma in the hospital, every time I visit her I go get her favorite candy from there.this candy shop wasn't like any other candy shop because for us it holds precious memories. The candy shop wasn't that far from the hospital. Just across the street through the woods on the dirt path and across the stream to a beautiful open field.

I start making my way there by exiting the hospital and walking down the dirt road. As I walk down the road I start to enter the woods. Oh how beautiful the woods were on this day. The leaves falling red and yellow and the wind brushing my face. I could also hear the faint sound of birds chirping and the splashes of the little stream up ahead.

As I walk further into the woods I reach the old wooden bridge. As I walked on it I take a second to stop and rest. I put my hand on the rough wooden railing as I look out into the deep woods recalling memories of my grandma. I recall me and my grandma holding hands when I was a kid walking through these woods. I was always quite scared of the woods when I was a kid, but being there with grandma and holding her hand always made me feel safe. I also remember her pointing out all the birds in the sky and telling me the names of all the animals and bugs we saw.

After a while of recalling all my happy memories of this place I soon decided to move on walking further into the woods. It wasn't long till I came to an opening in the woods to see the small wooden candy shop there all by its lonesome, but not in a sad way to me. It looks more like peace and joy from all the times my grandma took me here as a kid.

I soon walked into the shop to see an array of colors. Jars full of candy and shelves in the center each row filled with a different candy bar. I pick out mine and my grandma's favorite candy and go to the man at the cash register.

"You visiting your grandma again?" the young man says.

This wasn't the first time I had seen him. We meet many times when I came to visit my grandma.

"Yes, I am." I replied giving him a light smile.

He nods and scans the candy and tells me the price.

"Hope you have a good day," the man says, giving a little wave to which I wave back.

Soon after walking through the forest the sun was setting. I didn't realize how late it became but soon I was in the hospital. I walk up the stairs and to my grandma's room. I knock on the door. No reply. I knock again, no reply. She was probably sleeping because of how late it became so I quietly enter her room.

"Grandma," I whispered, "You awake?"

I walked to her and sat next to her on the bed. I noticed that the little monitor line wasn't moving any more. A tear runs down my face. I kiss her forehead lightly and say, "Goodnight, grandma. Sweet dreams."

I lay the bag of candy in her hands, then I go get the nurse.
