Patrick was compromised to stay at the house every night. From his parents' mouths, he needed to spend some time in the same house where his children were at in order to build a closer relationship with them.
The two children's father was very much alive yet the children never got to spend quality time with their own father. The grandparents wanted their grandchildren to receive fatherly love.
However, how could Patrick stomach seeing the fruits of his mistakes which ruined his life? Especially when these two children bore very similar features as the woman he hated the most?
Thus, every single day, Patrick would stay out late and only return home a few hours past midnight. He would sleep in a locked room without meeting his wife or the children, then leave home right after waking up again.
