Lewis didn't really mean to, though.
He didn't mean to fall for Lillian yet find the urge to hurt her at the same time. Through the pained expression she's mustering now, he could tell that he had hurted her with how he was thrown into panic out of nowhere.
His reaction probably made it look like he didn't want her there, much less be with her even just for a moment.
"I was really looking forward to this night, you know..." Lillian started once more, casting down her gaze.
"When I heard that the imperial family would come - that you would come, I was really happy. I thought that I could finally have an excuse to come close to you."
Everybody else thought that she's not really eager to go to the debutante ball since she didn't try to learn more about it in the first place. What they didn't know was that she'd been more than thrilled after hearing that the Grand Duke would come.
