Pet keeping wasn't generally accepted back then, and it wasn't common among the middle classes until recently.

In other words, the present time is witnessing the rise of pet keeping. People begin to perceive it as an apparent demonstration of man's domination over nature. This practice also reflects social attitudes as it is seen inappropriate for lower classes due to the thought that it encourages neglect of other social duties. 

Yet if there's anyone to blame for the sudden upsurge of the number of pet keepers, it will be none other than this certain affluent figure among the uppercrust society, Marchioness Diana Adelaide.
