Delphine and Simon knew that they had nothing more to do in the mountain, and they decided to walk out. If Delphine ever saw the elder dragon again, it would only be about business and not about earthly trials. She and Simon followed the road leading back to the mountain's entrance; they both had a feeling that the night is over and the demons are gone. Simon had this one feeling that when the sun comes up, the corpses of the beasts will be nothing but dust. They were both getting exhausted from everything that occurred in the night, and it was clear they both needed some time to rest.
The hellish flame which burned Delphine's greatsword was heating both her scabbard and her left thigh. She only felt the heat for a few minutes but will also contact it again when the next big onslaught occurs. The power of Rodan will only light up the sword when a demon that's difficult to kill. Delphine and Simon walked together and held hands to keep up with each other; Simon begins to see something, making her feel troubled. Even if she refused to discuss it with him, they were still in the mountain and had plenty of time to discuss their concerns.
"Are you burnt, Simon? Did the fire catch you?" Delphine asked.
"Not at all. I feel fine," Simon said.
"I know you heard my conversation with that dragon and that guardian. You think you understand. But you don't," she said. Simon was perplexed with what she was saying, and he could not figure out why she would think this way after receiving this dark magic.
He wanted to believe everything that is destined to happen, but it was nearly impossible to be convinced by Delphine.
"Why do you say nothing?" She asked.
"They told you that you'd be cursed," Simon said. It was a straight-up answer that he could believe only if it turned out to be faithful to him.
"You think I'm weak because I'm not like you. I don't think I'll ever have the time to tell you how I feel, and I may not be what you wanted. But after all this, I thought maybe things were different," he said. Delphine never said he is weak and never showed hate upon him, and she started to feel cold just by the thought of things being different.
Indeed, there is a huge possibility that the world around Delphine and Simon will never change; there is an even higher chance that both she and Simon will be cursed together.
"You don't know everything, Simon," Delphine said.
"No. But, at least I know the truth now," Simon said. He said this as if he knew enough about the Ebony Knight that he will just have to take it all to assumption.
"The truth?" Delphine asked. She then stops walking and begins looking forward at the entrance, which seemed like an extra mile ahead.
"The truth," she said again. Delphine would not have him know of the dangers of her life, and she believed she would bring so much harm upon him just by sharing who she truly is with him.
Then, Delphine spoke to him, saying, "I'm an outcast, Simon. I was born in a faraway land, but I was raised and grew up in Moria. The truth is, I was born to hunt the night and drive away from the demons. My people abandoned me and threw me out after Moria burned to ashes. My very presence brings fear to every man, woman, and child. The truth is, I have to live with the idea of being feared... being hated... never shown love. I've always wanted to live with others. I always wanted to be a part of society. Of all the things I do for them, I received nothing in return. I am forced to live with that.
"I am forced never to be loved by anyone. The only reason why I go to those cities and towns is that they need someone to protect them. They need somebody to protect them from the darkness. Every night and every single time, I throw away my own life to kill all who serve the night and bring havoc to the people of this world. And then... you came in. You came into my life and decided to follow me, be with me, fight for me, and try so hard to bring me back into the light."
Simon felt very sorrowful for Delphine, and he did not know he did a whole bunch of things for her sake. He was never told that he would bring Delphine away from the darkness she walks into; he might as well give her a big pat on the back and congratulate her.
"Simon? You don't have anything to say?" Delphine asked. She saw that Simon is looking down at himself and not feeling well after what she finished saying to him.
"No. I just don't know where we go from here. I don't know if what we're about to do will benefit the way those nordic people look at us," Simon said.
"I don't think they're opinions will change. I don't see them changing anytime soon," she said.
"Lagertha, has she known? Has she always known about this?" He asked.
"Of course. I have known the Wolf Queen almost my entire life. My life's work used to be in her name. Now, I'm done taking orders from her."
"So, it is true then. Why did you wait so long to tell me?"
Simon has always been a person who needed to know so many things about the world around him. He needed some way for Delphine to give him an answer; she walks up to him and places her hand on his shoulder.
"I had only hoped to spare you. Being someone like me... it can be a lifetime of suffering and anguish. That is the curse," Delphine said. She continues to lead the way outside of the mountain and never stop another time, and Simon walks behind her to catch up.
"So, what happens now? How will Osbert and Einar hear of this?" Simon asked.
"We'll just have to tell them half of everything that has happened. If it takes more than an explanation to prove myself, I'll not be afraid to do so. Let's keep going," Delphine answered. And so, she continued her way and never said anything else to Simon as they were both leaving the gigantic place.
As they walked, they could see daylight coming from a broad mile away, and they both ignored the ancient paintings while walking. They finally made it outside of the mountain, and the sun already rose from the clouds. Then, they both watched as the corpses of all of the dead creatures were turning to dust. The sun's rays were hot enough to burn their whole bodies to the ground; Delphine and Simon walked over them and had a long way ahead. Both of them were starting to get exhausted from all of the walking and the swinging of their swords.
Delphine and Simon found themselves on the edge of the massive cliff again, and they were both in need of somewhere to rest. She saw that Simon was more exhausted than he ever could be, mainly after he fought with Delphine's dagger. She knew she could not allow him to sleep while walking next to her, and she refused to let him fall from another cliff.
"Don't worry, Simon. We'll get out of here and live to tell about it," Delphine said. She was not afraid to carry him the rest of the way; somehow, she needed to be very cautious about her next move.
"I'm sure we will. I'm also sure that we'll end up in a ditch in some forest somewhere," Simon said.
"Don't think that way, Simon. Do not rely on something that is going to happen to you and me once we return to Bebbanburg," she said.
"I have always known you had a gentle personality. I can accept that more than your inner-self," he said.
"I'll let you know one thing. When we report back to Osbert, you're not going to tell him anything that you saw in the cave. Like all the other times, I'll be the one to do all of the talking. Of course, you are welcome to tell him about your other adventures, but make sure they have nothing to do with me. You call yourself an adventurer, do you not?"
"Oh. Well, you know, I've been to many places from the north and south. I guess you could say I've been through all of the four corners of this world. In the night, I do pretty much what you do... killing monsters, animals, and demons."
"Save your breath for what is about to happen once we go back into the city. We'll have plenty of time to talk when we get to that place."
