I Knew that I was right when I woke up to the most feared word in the town. "INTRUDERS!", bellowed a voice. My face was a strike of fear. Not for myself but for Ivan. "Ivan", I scooped him up and sprinted downstairs. My mother ushered us into a room beneath the treehouses roots.
Throughout the day all I could hear was the clang of swords and the cries of wounded warriors. I could tell Ivan was scared, it was written across his face. I held him close. The air was stale underground. My mother brought us avocado toast for lunch. By now I was the one that needed the comforting. Our soldiers usually drive away any attack before dawn.
By nightfall the siege hadn't ended. I wrapped myself in a wool blanket. Ivan fell asleep next to me but I couldn't give in to the tiredness that was urging me to close my eyes. Neither could I lie down for fear that someone would find our hiding place.
