Chapter 2 - Ignored Mischief

Dawn never quite knew what to make of the young prince of Carendlus.

Even though he was dripping wet from the prank her own son had just pulled, Prince Jaekel just looked at the slightly younger kid with no change of expression. Her own son was laughing merrily, obviously enjoying his handiwork.

Dawn felt somewhat embarrassed on her son's behalf. She was not too worried about the prank causing any real strife between their kingdoms, or even their families. Of all the other kingdoms they had the closest relationship with this one.

She glanced at Queen Fayre wanting to apologize on behalf of her son and his mischievous spirit. Fayre did not really look too upset on her son's behalf, though she was watching closely. She shook her head as Dawn opened her mouth to say something so she shut it. The younger queen probably wanted the children to handle it on their own. After all, Jaekel definitely was mature enough to handle Dawn's childish son pretty well.

Dawn honestly found it surprising just how mature the ten-year-old was. She had never, at any point in any of her and her husband's visits to this neighboring kingdom, heard this young boy lose his temper. He would argue, but usually very calmly(excepting maybe with the eldest daughter of the Court Sorcerer), and he would seldom lose the arguments he did make.

Because Fayre had asked her silently to just watch she did. Inwardly she was a bit relieved that this queen was so patient with the child. Not all of the queens would have allowed it. Most of them she did not really care too much how they thought of her and her children. But Fayre was someone that Dawn did enjoy a close relationship with and she would like to keep it. She really did regret not going to her wedding.

Anyway, Jaekel after gazing at her son for a moment with no real reaction just turned and walked over to the corner of the room where two children very near his age were engrossed in reading. He smiled and raised his arms a little, "Rune? May you?"

The older child, a red-haired girl, raised her head. Without any hesitation she flipped her hand up and a fierce wind sprung around the prince. It only lasted a few seconds, but when it ended he was completely dry. Hair sticking up a little, and clothes a bit messed up, but dry.

As the prince smiled his thanks at the young sorceress, she turned and fixed her somber grey eyes on Quertiz. "My prince may ignore it when you pull a prank on him, but be careful. If you push your luck too much I do know a few hex's. At least one that would prove rather annoying to a shapeshifter."

"Amrune…" Fayre let out a sigh, as she warned the young lady, "If your father heard you he would get onto you."

"As a helper to the Court Sorcerer, aren't I supposed to help defend our prince?"

Jaekel patted her head, "Rune… it was just a small prank. No harm done."

"You're my best friend. I don't like it when people don't treat you well."

"Thanks for your concern, but it's not like he meant any harm. He's just playing and it's only water."

Amrunela listened to her prince and just told the other prince, "Well, just don't go too far."

Dawn's own son seemed a bit surprised by how serious the other child was and he looked between them as the expression on his face shifted slightly. It was not abnormal for Dawn to see this, as her son realized that what he had just done was not something he should have done.

Fayre smiled softly and spoke quietly so none of the children would be able to hear them, "They are all good children. Yours is a bit full of mischief but still he wants to be good. Amrune gets a little feisty when her best friend is threatened but she means well."

"And Jaekel never does anything that causes grief?" Dawn shook her head. It was a bit unsettling for a kid to be that well behaved.

But Fayre actually looked a little sad. "The very fact that he is too mature causes some grief for my husband and me. At least he does behave a bit more like a normal child if little Amrune is near him. Still, I wish he didn't have to carry that burden."

Dawn laid her hand on her friend's arm, "Well, he seems to be fairly well adjusted despite it."

"Thank you." Fayre laughed, "And he is good with the whole brood of children that my best friend gave birth too."

As they were talking Jaekel had taken Quertiz and started playing with him in a manner that distracted him from his usual mischief. This prince was really good at handling children of all different personalities. Even Dawn's unruly son he could easily handle. Once her young daughter was a bit older, she would not be surprised if she started trying to follow this young prince around and bug him much like her son already did.
