I had a sinking feeling in my stomach as I drove to the hospital with my mother at the driver's seat. I sat in the front next to her and my brother sat in the back, headphones on and listening to some music.
It was midday and the sun was shining high up in the sky. The streets were busy with workers on lunch breaks, heading to cafes or talking with each other.
Birds chirped, singing to each other and flying in massive flocks like black dots painted into the sky. My mind kept thinking back to that day last week. Those people who were trying to kidnap me. What did they want? Maybe they thought I was already and EI and could use my power? Well, nobody knows. I just need to move on and try to keep safe.
Everybody at school since the announcement on TV had been talking about the games and how excited they were to watch them. I'd probably be excited too if I weren't the one taking part in the games.
"Here we are," My mother parked up in the cark park just outside the hospital, turning off the engine, opening her door and stepping outisde.
I exited the car, following my mum in to the hospital with my brother close behind. It wasn't very busy, with only three people in the waiting room. We walked up to the desk where my mother signed us in.
"Hi, my son is here for the EI project," She stepped to the side, allowing the nurse to see me. The nurse smiled before tapping away at her keyboard and then pointing to a door to our right.
"All right. Just outside there is Doctor Lawson who will take you to the room," She told us. We went through the door, spotting a doctor walking towards us. He was a tall man with messy hair and a scruffy beard.
"You must be here for the EI, right? Follow me," He turned and led us down multiple white, pristine corridors and by many hospital rooms. I heard speaking from multiple rooms and crying from others. This was a place where people where healed but also it was a graveyard where people died.
"Here we are, this is the lab. Please, come in," He opened a white painted wooden door with a post-it-note reading 'lab' stuck onto it. Hm. If they can't afford a sign for a door then how can they afford to speed up human evolution?
We entered the room, only to find that it was nothing like a lab. The room was small and square, like a storage room, with white walls, a chair and a table. On said table was a needle and a vial of crimson red liquid.
"Take a seat," He gestured to the chair which I promptly sat on, making myself comfortable. "So, how old are you?" He asked, messing with the needle and vial on the table. I didn't pay attention, knowing how this was going to go.
"Fifteen," I answered.
"Fifteen, huh? Leaving highschool soon?" He asked me. He had an uninterested tone in his voice.
"Yeah-" I felt the prick on my skin and the stinging of the needle. Suddenly it was gone, leaving my arm sore. Quickly, he wiped away a spot of blood and then placed cotton wool against the dot of blood and wrapped tape over it to keep it in place.
"All done," He smiled, placing the needle down.
I knew he would do that. Doctors can't be trusted- they are demons.
"Ah- thanks. Can I go now?" I asked the doctor.
"Sure, first your mother needs to fill some papers," He pulled some papers from seemingly nowhere and handed them to my mother who quickly filled them out.
"Please hand them in at the front desk, and then you're good to go. The project's company will be in touch soon once you awaken your abilities. Have a nice day!"
"Can I talk to you in private?" I asked the doctor.
"Of course!" My mother and brother left the room, standing outside and waiting.
"Something happened a couple days ago, causing the police to get involved. Nothing turned up in their investigations, so I want to ask you people because I have my suspicions,"
