Chapter 2 - Like a phoenix, I died and was reborn

"Crap crap crap, where's my laptop" I squeal running down the stairs into the kitchen.

"Lilly must you squeal so loudly, I haven't had my morning coffees yet" moans Grandma.

"Wait coffees how much do you drink?" I reply as I rummage through the luggage left on the table.

" I have maybe 10 cups a day, it stops me shaking" Grandma mumbles. " found it , Mum let's go I've got my laptop" I yell.

" Be there in a minute" Mum replies

" might want to cut down on the coffee Gran, love you" I chuckle to Grandma, as I walk out the door and wait in the car. Mum gets there moments later and pulls out of the driveway.

"Here we are Lilly, Salt Lake City Public high school, school dosent start for another hour and the car park looks empty are you okay being dropped off this early?" Mum asks.

"Yes Mum, you've gotta get going don't you have an interview in half an hour" I reply looking at my phone.

"Just call me if you need anything, love you bye" Mum says smiling.

I watch her car drive off until I can no longer see it, I sigh and look at the map I was emailed, and make my way to the office.

I see move my inside the office building, oh good there's people here, I walk in.

"Hello, my names Wendy and how can I help you?" The short bubbly blonde woman behind the counter chirps. "Umm my name is Lilly Daichi, it's might first year here" I stammered.

"Ohh are you British, you sound British?" Wendy asked.

"Ahh Australian actually, but I get British a lot" I awkwardly replied

"let me print your timetable and I'll drop you off in your home room" Wendy said happily.

"So why did you move to the US?" Wendy questioned. Think brain think 2 lies , 1 truth.

" umm well my grandma lives here by herself and is quite frail and Mum got a great job offer she couldn't refuse so we moved" I replied. That's an easy enough answer to remember sorta true and easy to understand.

"Here's your homeroom, have a great day Lilly" Wendy smiles as she waved goodbye and headed back to the office.

I opened the door, I don't know what I was expecting but no one was here yet. I walked in and out my stuff in the corner back seat closet to the windows and furthest from the door. The door opened and a man in his maybe mid 30s walked in carrying a large cardboard box. He was decent looking pale skin, brown eyes with long lashes, dark brown and hair carefully gelled back.

"Hey there I'm Mr Miller and you are?" He asked.

"Lilly Daichi, I'm the new student" I politely replied.

" yep, I was told about you, Ill have you say a few words about yourself when the rest of the class gets here ok and I'll choose someone to show you around" Mr Miller said as he scrolled through his phone.

I slumped my head onto my desk, Great what was I going to say about myself. Hi I'm Lilly Daichi and I moved here from Australia because I'm a kitsune and my mum was having a hard time keeping me under control by herself. Oh and I can make earthquakes occur when I'm highly stressed.

Other kids begin filing in as it got closer to school starting, then the bell rang. "Ok everyone settle down find a seat" Mr Miller shouted. The room began to whiten down as people took their seats.

" we have a new student, Lilly tell us about your self" Mr Miller asked.

I stood up, I heard some of the girls muttering "she's really tall, I thought she was a guy", " she's so flat chested maybe she is a guy"

"Yo Mill dawg, I back" a loud voice boomed as the door opened and in walked a the boy. I stared at his face it was him. I clenched my fist in my pocket. Definitely him.

"Cole your late, I thought we were turning over a new leaf" Mr Miller groaned. " take a seat please". "Lilly please continue please, " Mr Miller muttered.

"Umm so my names Lilly Daichi, I've moved here from Sydney Australia, I hope you all treat me well" I stammered and then sat down quickly. "Ok I'm going to pull a name out of the hat and that persons showing Lilly around today, ok?" Mr Miller stated. "Makayla pick a name please" Mr Miller said offering the hat to the nearest student.

She reached in and pulled out a name, " Daya Garcia" Makayla announced. The small Hispanic girl waved her hand and looked back at me and smiled " Hi I'm Daya, but please call me De"

The first two periods went through fast with mostly mundane speeches about student expectations and so forth.

Bell rings

"Hey Lilly right?" The stench of over done perfume hits my nose, the smell belonging to a girl who looks right out of a perfume ad. "Do you want to have like lunch with us?"

"Sorry Mia but I have to show Lilly around before next period" answered De giving my shoulder a squeeze.

"Maybe another time" I smile at this girl who looks as though she thinks she's doing me a favour.

"Yeah see you around" Mia says flashing a totally perfect fake smile.

"People here are kinda superficial" De explained "like they'll say one thing bit mean another". "No offence but people are problems like woah she's the new kid"

"Mia used to be best friends with me actually when she first moved here" chuckled De, " but last year she started hanging out with some cooler friends and we just grew apart".

"So if you want to be popular don't be friends with me" smiled De.

Lilly looked down at De's face to see how eyes had lost there shine from before. Obviously the wounds of losing her friend were still fresh.

Wanting to change the subject "so what do you guys do for fun around here?" Lilly asked

De's eyes lit up and she began listing off things Lilly had never even heard of. As Lilly and De chattered down the hall Lilly felt a shoulder hit her. She turned around to apologise "I'm so sorry, I wasn't paying attention" she exclaimed. Then she saw his face "Oh it's you" she added. The boy just shrugged and walked off.

"How do you know Cole?" Asked De.

Lilly felt her face turning bright red, "oh he's my neighbour", she replied.

"He's hot, but he has a terrible personality" answered De. "Don't tell anyone or you'll have girls who want to be your friend to go to your house, for the chance to run into Cole".

Lilly couldn't make eye contact as she felt she would spontaneously combust.

Lilly felt overwhelmed and like the world was closing in. Shrieks rang out from outside. Looking outside the window into the garden by the car park, Lilly saw a tree fall onto one of the students cars. Did she do that? Feeling uneasy Lilly said "De I'm feeling a bit unwell I'm going to go home for the day"

"What, oh ok" De answered clearly preoccupied with what had happened outside " the nurses office is just down the hall".

Walking down to the nurses office the past event kept racing through Lilly's mind. When she arrived at the office the nurse looked up at her "feeling unwell dear?" asked the nurse.

"Umm, yeah" answered Lilly.

"Just ring your guardian to pick you up, the first day at a new school can be a bit much" replied the nurse. Obviously from the shocked look on Lilly's face the nurse replied " I make it a practice to familiarise myself with face of new students"

"Oh ok" Lilly replied cautiously as she dialled her mums number, she quickly hung up. Her mum was at work. Thinking again she dialled her grandmother's number.

"Lilly dear is everything ok?" Her grandmother answered.

"Yes grandma I'm feeling a little under the weather would you be able to pick me up?" Asked Lilly

"Of course" her grandmother replied "I knew you would still be tired from your travelling, I told your mother this" , she sighed " I'll be there in ten minutes
