Chapter 1 - CHAPTER ONE

(A BIRTHDAY THAT CHANGES EVERYDAY)

Ashley, a short girl for her age, has blue eye, long straight black hair. Ashley had woken up on a cloudy Saturday morning, alone, in her room. She was disappointed, but not for long. Her sister, Amanda, had entered the room holding a cake in her hand. Amanda, has a model built, and has a white curly hair which never loves being dye black; although she had tried but failed as the root always grow overnight.

"Happy birthday, Ashley," said Amanda placing the cake on the table, "You are now eighteen today"

"Thank you, Amanda," said Ashley. "You are the only one that remembers my birthday every year"

"Don't sweet talk me Ashley, the rest of the family are not at home," said Amanda blushing, "Actually, it is not new; I am the only one that does remember it, because it is the two of us that celebrate your birthday together. Now, come here and get a hug from me. It is not everyday that one clocks eighteen." pulling Ashley to herself for a hug.

"Sniff"

"Stop sniffing me like a dog, Amanda" said Ashley, breaking free from Amanda hug and going over to the cake.

"Not so fast young lady," said Amanda going over to the table and slapping Ashley hand away from the cake. "You have to light the candle first and make a wish before eating the cake."

"Okay," said Ashley, following Amanda instruction, she lightens the candles, make a wish and then blow out the candles "Can I eat the cake now?"

"Yep, and when you are done, don't forget to dress up," Amanda said as she move to the door, she pause "And don't ask me where we are going," Amanda said holding up her hand to stop Ashley barrel of question, " Just get ready on time or I will. . ." Amanda trails off leaving Ashley in suspense.

Few minutes later, Ashley was dressed and was ready to go, going over to her sister room and being scrutinize under her sister eagle eye.

Few moments later, they were zooming off from their house and were on the highway, as Amanda drives their parent favorite car, to where the surprise was. Ashley was holding tightly to the seatbelt as Amanda was driving at the highest speed.

"S-s-slow down, Amanda, I don't want to die yet" said Ashley turning red due to the forceful air hitting her face.

"Don't worry, Ashley, I won't allow us to die so easily" said Amanda confidently.

Out of nowhere, a car suddenly over takes their car and slow down in front of their car. Amanda press the brake and the car halt before it could hit the car at their front.

"I said it!" said Ashley

"Sorry," said Amanda "I didn't know that there was such a reckless driver apart from me."

Amanda drives slowly after that incident. For her, it was the longest car ride ever in her life. She had learnt how to drive a car while in college, but hadn't had a chance to practice driving a car alone; and she couldn't help herself when she finally laid her hand on the steering wheel of her parent car. As for Ashley, she could finally calm her racing heart, and enjoy the cool breeze.

Arriving at the park and parking the car at the reserve area, meant for cars, Amanda heave a sigh of relief as the torture was over.

"We are here," said Amanda in a sing song voice. Not getting any response from Ashley, she looks beside her to see Ashley snoring away and sleeping peacefully. Shaking her head at the sleeping figure, she went over to her side of the car as she wakes her up.

"Wakey, wakey," said Amanda tapping Ashley shoulder as she gently wake her up. Ashley finally wakes up after the unrelenting and continuous tap of her shoulder "You seem to sleep peacefully no matter where you find yourself …"

Amanda shifted back, creating space as Ashley got down from the car, stretching her body; she seems to have realized that she was in a strange place after looking around.

"Where are we?" said Ashley covering her mouth as she yawn.

"We are at the park," said Amanda as she lock the car with the car remote, "You've always wanted to visit a park ever since you were small, and you won't stop talking about it, so I decided to bring you here today, as a surprise."

"Thank you," said Ashley hugging her sister with a watery eye "But, where are we going to get the money to pay for the ride?"

"You, just don't worry that your small brain about that, I am the one taking you out today," said Amanda tapping Ashley on the left side of her head "Since today is a special day for you, come, follow me, let's not waste our time and get the fun started"

After paying for the ticket, they went to different play station, and Ashley had the best moment in her life: playing a shooting game, climbing the fake mountain, rescuing parks of wolves from the hunter and so on. Taking a break, she went over to her sister, as her sister was recording and taking pictures of her.

"That was fun," said Ashley as she pant for breathe, "But, I need to get an ice cream --- or any chill drink."

"I've got one here," said Amanda as she put down the camera to take the drink out, sighing in disappointed, "It is no longer chilled, why don't you let us go over to the ice cream joint so that you can get an ice cream?"

"Sure, no problem," said Ashley as she help her sister to pack their stuff.

"Let's go"

Getting to the ice cream joint, the queue was long and Ashley didn't mind waiting for long, Amanda phone rang, giving Ashley the cash she will be needing, she distance herself from the crowd, and went to a quiet area so that she could answer the call.

"Hello, Margaret," said Amanda surprised by the call, "Why the call--- all of a sudden?"

"Andrew just received a call, your parents are on their way back from their trip and they want the car that you guys drove out," said Margaret over the phone as she informed them about the latest development.

"Okay, thank you, I will be hanging up now, please tell Andrew to expect us back in the next fifty minutes," said Amanda.

"Fifty?" said Margaret, "But, he will be late to pick up your parent from the airport, the airport is two hour drive from the house."

"You know what, tell Andrew to meet me halfway on the highway, I will have to exchange the car," said Amanda as she look for the easiest way out of the dilemma.

"Ok," said Margaret as she hang up.

Amanda went over to Ashley, as Ashley was now on the queue and a small girl was standing in front of her, whispering to her about the latest development. She promised she wouldn't be long to pick her up. She left after pecking her cheeks and telling her to keep safe.

It wasn't a surprise that Ashley rejected following her sister for now, she knew Amanda will be speeding on the highway at the highest speed and she wasn't ready for another crazy drive of hers; once, was enough, she couldn't help but to pray for her sister safety.

She got her ice cream in no time and was roaming around the park, when she slams into a man, spilling all of her ice cream on the man.

"Are you ok?" said Ashley as she takes out a hand towel, dabbing it at the man shirt as she tries to get the stain off from the man clothes.

"I'm really sorry; I was a bit absent-minded and wasn't looking at where I was going,"

"It's nothing," said the man alleviating Ashley worry, "I will just drop it with the dry cleaners, they will get the stain out and it will be back to the normal stage that it was in."

"But, I don't have the money for that," said Ashley as all she was left with, was the little amount of money meant for her sister ice cream which she didn't buy, as she was sure the ice cream will have melted before her sister arrive to pick her up.

"I didn't say that you will bear the expenses," said the man smiling, his eye went to the necklace on Ashley neck, "What is that?" the man asked pointing at her neck.

"Oh, it's just a necklace, that I had had for long since I could remember," said Ashley as she finger the necklace. The necklace has been the only thing she remembered growing up with and her parent couldn't explain where it came from, whenever she had asked them.

"The necklace is nice," said the man, "I just wish I can get a knock off, not the real one, mind you--- you know---just as a souvenir."

"I don't know where you can have a knock off done," said Ashley as she stood up from her bent position.

The man also stands up, looking around, he seems happy as he remembered something.

"Look over there, that is a workshop, I seem to have remember that, they can make a knock off of any item you bring to them for just for one dollar," the man said, "Come on, it won't last for more than five minutes and you and I will be on our separate way."

Fifteen minutes later, the man left the workshop, beaming happily as he held the knock off jewelry close to his chest, afraid that somebody might pop out of nowhere and stole it from him; the soiled shirt was long forgotten.

Ashley had spent no penny as the man they met in the workshop, had asked if he could do more than one of the knock off, and had forced her to collect the fake one as a way of showing his appreciation; this was a rare privilege for him, as it was the first time of him handling such a priceless jewelry. Ashley had left happily, going back to the ice cream joint and holding one of the knock off jewelry in her hand. The only thing left was to wait for her Amanda to come back to the pack.

She didn't have to wait for long as she caught sight of Amanda, going to meet her mid-way.

"How was it? Did you make it on time?" Ashley asked seeing the beads of sweat on her sister forehead.

"Yes, I did, but the car ride back here, WAS HELL!" said Amanda, taking her sister hand as she led her to the car pack.

"Tell me about it." Ashley said following her sister as they arrived at the car park.

"Well, what else is there to say….?" Amanda trail off as she kick start the car, reversing out of the car park as they left for home, "The only thing I can wish for right now, is to get home before I die in this slow moving car."

Ashley laugh, she finally understood why she was grumping, the car they were in couldn't run as fast as the one they were in, in the morning; at least, she was going to have her heart beating normally and not hanging up in her throat.

How wrong she was, by the time she got home, she was wishing she had never rejoiced over her sister crestfallen expression, as the car move so slow on the highway, she was sure a tortoise could outrun the car. What was their parent thinking --- keeping this kind of old-fashioned car in the house.

Amanda was relaxing in her room, when Margaret came to inform her that her parent were back from the airport. This was a surprise to everyone in the house, as it was strange, having them around, they seems to never break their tradition of missing Ashley birthday, what could be the occasion.

Going downstairs, she met her parent in the sitting room; Ashley came down grudgingly from her room. Moving to stand beside her sister as they wait for their parent lecture speech, but none came. "Maybe they have turn a new leaf," both sister thought. How were they supposed to know that the perfect birthday has come to the end, and that they will both be whisk off from the house the next day.

The parent were both eyeing their children, they had known about their adventure and where not in the mood to scold them. They were feeling jet-lag and what was on their mind was to deliver the good news and get them away from their sight for now.

"Don't just stand there like a person waiting for the judge verdict," said their mother, Ashley sat down on the couch with her sister, both leaning on each other for mental support.

"Why are you both doing as if you will soon be separated from each other?" their father asked, "That aside, Amanda, why didn't you tell us, that you were coming home. Your caretaker had called that she hadn't see you for days."

"U-uhm, nothing Dad, I just wanted to come home for Ashley birthday," said Amanda as she look at her hands, she found them interesting suddenly."

"Let it be Fred," said their mother, "Why don't you tell Ashley the good news."

"Ok, Martha," said their father, facing the two girls, "Ashley, we received a letter this morning and you have been offered admission to study psychology."

Both girls shouted as they were happy. Ashley had filled the form, and had chosen psychology as her course of study.

"Whoa! Ashley, you did it, you got your dream course," said Amanda as she hug Ashley tightly.

"Thank you, Amanda."

"If you guys are done with that, you might want to listen to the rest of the information," said their father, Fred, this caught the attention of the two girls as they pay rapt attention, "Amanda, you will be taking Ashley with you tomorrow as you leave for college, first flight in the morning."

"What!" both girls shouted in horror, Ashley had wanted to school in her state and doesn't want the hassle of traveling from one place to another. Amanda has shouted because she realized that her parent, had gone and done it again, and that was changing their school of choice behind their back; just like they did for her and Rachel.

Their parent left them there as they went to their bedroom. Margaret came forward and told them their schedule for tomorrow. "It would be nice, if both of you can get some rest now, for the journey ahead of you," Margaret advised as she left them in the room as she went about to get the necessities that will be needed for the girls journey.
