C28: Seeds Of Doubt
[…So while Egostic is dragging his feet, go get ready, okay?]
After the phone call with the president of the Association, she was flying away.
She's going to get the derecognition device and come back as fast as possible, although she's not sure whether it will be delayed or not.
If Egostic wasn't here, it would have been a normal incident where there would be hundreds of casualties.
"Haa, haa…"
She flew tens and hundreds of kilometers across the sky.
She was wondering if it was too late and if everything was already over, but she kept flying.
Her in-ear earphones, which are connected to the Association's staff, couldn't be heard as she was flying so fast. But she couldn't slow down. She wasn't sure how many more people would be harmed in that brief moment of her procrastination.
When she gets to the place where the villains are on the rampage.
The villain already collapsed.
And nearby, a man calmly picked up his guns lying on the ground and put them in the sack.
It was Egostic, the one that has been on her mind the most these days.
"Huff… Huff…"
She turned her head and tried to grasp the situation.
A huge guy with a crocodile-like face collapsed on the floor.
Green smoke was floating around the crocodile monster, Egostic was wearing a gas mask, so it seems like some biochemical weapon were used.
Where the hell did he get that? How did he come up with that?
Swallowing her rising doubts, she only wanted to confirm the truth with him again.
"…Did you knock him down?"
"Yes, that's right. I knocked him down."
Her brows naturally frowned at his nonchalant response. She doesn't understand. Why did he suddenly appear and kill that crocodile monster? What does it mean to him?
Putting all the question together, she could only ask.
"…Why?"
Egostic opened his mouth and started speaking as if he already prepared the answer.
"Well, I was just resting, and all of sudden, they suddenly had a freak show on TV. So I thought, 'Our Stardus has become popular.' and was getting some popcorn. But he suddenly mentioned me? He said you and I were sucking and kissing or something. It made me feel mad. What did I do?"
That monster called out Egostic?
Maybe she couldn't hear it because she immediately took Chaehyun away from the scene. As Shin Haru was thinking, Egostic continued.
"He said you and I were sucking and kissing or something. It made me feel mad. What did I do?"
Her face frowned at his words.
What? Egostic and her sucking each other? That's a ridiculous slander. They were enemies from the beginning.
…But when Egostic said it made him mad, she also felt a little upset. Somehow, she's uncomfortable.
"And according to my dictionary, I need to educate people who play tricks on me. To set an example, I played with them."
As expected, that was the main point.
Her expression relaxed before she knew it.
Yeah, that crazy guy would do that.
He's been showing himself as an impulsive and destructive person.
When a weaker man than Egostic himself mentioned his name, he seemed to have killed him because he was mad.
As she cleared all the questions that she had in mind.
Suddenly, he manipulated the camera that was filming him with his telekinesis and stood against her.
He talked to her in a small voice.
"…And I'm saying this because we are on mute. From now on, don't even think about going out and revealing your face like today. The moment you do it, your life will be very difficult."
What?
She was surprised.
How does he know that she had that thought?
While she had a brain freeze, Egostic was already waving at the camera.
"Okay! That is all for today's broadcast. I'm very tired because I came forward without any plans today. There will be a big thing coming next month, so please look forward to it. I will see you next time. Goodbye~"
Wait, the big one next month?
But first, how did he know what she was thinking before?
"Wait!"
Before she could ask him hastily, he had already disappeared.
Except for the crocodile monster who was lying down next to her, the rooftop became empty.
"…What the hell?"
***
And a few days have passed.
The incident was quickly forgotten by the people.
The case was also closed within the Association with disciplinary action being taken against B-class heroes who could have been dispatched to the scene at the time.
"Haa. I would have been in big trouble if this Egostic guy didn't come. This guy, he's a crazy dog. If a crazy dog bites us, it's a big deal, but if he runs at the enemy, there's nothing more reliable than that! Haha."
Leaving behind the easygoing president's grin, she stepped out of the office.
"Phew…"
She left the building after completing all the reports, she sighed as she looked up the sky.
It's a good thing. It's a good thing but…
Why is her mind so complicated?
Walking down the street, she entered the school community on her phone.
She searched by typing each word in the search box in the community.
[Egostic]
Not a lot of posts.
She wondered, but then searched differently after thinking for a while.
[Mango Stick]
Then the posts poured in.
[Mango Stick! Mango Stick! Mango Stick!]
[I also crave for a Mango Stick today]
[Baby Mangboong joined the Mango Union… Is it possible to be hot?]
[I think Mango Stick is better than the heroes these days. Haha]
[Mango Stick is from our university ( I have proof)]
[You guys praised Egostic and defended the villain then you've stopped for a month. Why aren't you doing it now? Fuck Hahahaha]
[Forecast Mango Stick's next month terrorism… real fact.]
Many of the posts were praising Egostic.
As she continued to looking through the posts with mixed emotions, a post caught her eyes.
[You guys have been blabbing about Mango Stick and sucking up the villains. Korea at this rate…]
That's right, there are people here who have identified the problem with the current social phenomenon like themselves.
She clicked on the post in anticipation.
The post popped up.

"Damn it."
She decided to press back.
Eventually, she turned off her phone after finding nothing and looked out of the running window resting her chin on her hand.
Except her, everyone loves Egostic.
Where in the world did it go wrong?
"…Didn't he cause no casualty, not even one? And because that Egostic guy has been hunting villains these days, the crime rate has decreased. Let's leave him alone for now. It's hard to catch him because he can report anyway."
"Well. What if he causes another terrorist attack? Haha, then you can stop him, I only trust you. Our Association trusts you."
…The words of the president of the Association kept echoing in her head.
The head of the Superpower Association of Korea said so, maybe Egostic is really harmless.
But it's an incarnation of unpredictable thinking just by looking at what he has shown so far…
Honestly, if she hadn't stopped them, all the people on the ships and those who were tied on the tracks would have died.
If someone had been killed by Egostic, would people still praise him like they do now?
"…"
Yeah, it couldn't have been.
She leaned her face against the window and closed her eyes.
Egostic, how did this guy know she was going to step out with her bare face?
Did he read her mind? Like a mind reader?
No way. He doesn't have that ability.
So how the hell did he know? Was he there at the festival?
How did he know? Does that mean he knows my personal information? That I'm Shin Haru?
"…"
Yeah, that's not the point.
The important thing is that Egostic is definitely a villain. She will catch him. Just like other villains.
She renewed her commitment.
But before she knew it, a seed was planted in her heart.
Maybe other people are right, maybe they are wrong. That seed of doubt.
***
"…Soobin, is he still not awake yet?"
"Yeah, but his vitals are much better now. I think he will wake up soon."
"Haa… What was this idiot thinking throwing himself in like this…?"
Egostic, Da-in was leaning on the bed, and Han Seo-eun looked at him.
What was he thinking rushing out there without any plans like that?
…Stardus, probably because of her.
"..."
Han Seo-eun somehow felt uncomfortable when she thought of Stardus.
Da-in has never said it himself, but she has instinctively deduced it.
This time, also the previous time.
For Stardus, Da-in would jump in fire and water.
Which part of Stardus does he like?
More than that.
"Cough, cough."
"Oppa!"
Before she could continue her thought, Da-in woke up.
It has been three days since he collapsed.

C29: Stepping Stone
I woke up after being in a coma for three days.
As soon as I woke up, Seo-eun welcomed me with tears.
"You're really crazy!", Seo-eun hit me. Gosh, Seo-eun. It really hurts! Stop it!
As I just sat up and tried to calm her down, I could feel that she was really surprised. I guess she was worried because I suddenly passed out like a dead body for three days.
Still, I was a little touched by Seo-eun's tears as I woke up from the coma. The time we lived together wasn't wasted, she shed tears for me. I finally see the effects from playing games and hanging out with her!
I smiled at Seo-eun, who shed tears and told me to take care of myself in the future, and to vow to be careful in the future. Well, there's no guarantee that I won't do it again.
I woke up to soothe Seo-eun, and said thank you to Soobin for taking care of me. Then I went through the public's opinion right away.
What did people say about me?
What did they say about Stardus?
Well, and the result of the analysis is my popularity is at its peak. Many articles said that people seemed to think of me, a villain, as a hero.
Hmm… As expected, it turned out like this.
I just killed him because I was put to shame, but it became a favorable factor. I guess I feel great.
And the shocking part was that this Crocodile Man was alive. He didn't die after being hit by the poisonous gas? Well, of course, I used a weak one just in case… But I didn't know that he would survive. Well, he faced the same situation in the original comic and he had a hard time because of it.
He is said to have returned to his normal human form from the crocodile state, and has been placed in Superpower Detention Center of the East after the treatment.
Well, it went the way it was written in the original.
Superpower Detention Center of the East. It's called East Carcer. Precisely, it's a place where they gather and imprison villains with superpowers.
Like the Hero Association, each country has a place called 'Carcer'. Carcer, Latin for prison. Immediately after the first Superpower Detention Center, 'America's Carcer' was established in the U.S, all Superpower Detention Centers built in other countries since then are written as Carcer.
It's the highest security-grade facility in each country, and it's also a place where all kinds of tools are installed to limit the ability of each prisoner according to their characteristics. It's built on an uninhabited island in the East Sea, and it's protected with such strict security that there is a saying that no one can come out once entered. Of course, in the original comic, Seo-eun hacked and broke it off.
Anyway, he's trapped there alive, so he may die there some day. He's a little dumb, so I think he will die easily. But I'm not sure if he's like that only when he's in crocodile mode or even in human mode.
Anyway, I played and rested for a few days after that.
I'm a normal citizen in the first place. After working so hard, I have to take a break since I was worn out.
…I think Seo-eun has been staying by my side and hanging out with me more than before. What's wrong with her?
Of course, I don't just lie down and play every day. Sometimes, I tell Seo-eun and Soobin about the hero society of Korea. They both stayed in their rooms and studied computer technology, so they didn't know much about current events.
"Now, today, let's learn about the reality of heroes in Korea. Soobin, do you know how the public thinks about heroes?"
"Hmm… They must like them, right? Because they're the ones who save people."
"No, they don't. Korea is a bit different. So, let me give you guys an example. The family was attacked by a villain. So they called out a hero. But before the hero came, the villain had already killed them all and ran away. Then do you know who people blame?"
"Aren't they obviously going to blame the villain?"
"Oh, of course, they will blame the villain. They resent the villain, but they will blame the hero as much as the villain. 'My family died because you came late.', they would said"
"…But it's not the heroes' fault, is it? They didn't come late because they wanted to."
"That's right. But the citizens don't care about that. They could have just come quickly, but they were rambling so the family died. That's how people resent them. Well, that's not all, but anyway, these similar things got together and became distrustful of heroes. In conclusion, the Korean people don't trust the heroes very much."
My throat hurts because I spoke for too long.
I took a sip of the pat bottle that was ripped off on the side.
"Don't touch your lips while drinking it."
I listened to Seo-eun's complaint and did it. Gosh, Seo-eun. I thought that you were looking at your phone, but when did you start to have interest in me?
As Seo-eun looked at it, she eventually opened her mouth and drank it. You should have got your own water instead…
As my throat moistened, I continued to explain again.
"Honestly, heroes are crazy and jumpy. No, it's sad to work with their life on the line, but they even get cursed at. In fact, there are only a few heroes in Korea, so it's difficult for someone to go to the site in case of an emergency. So there's inevitable delays. But they get cursed at."
"Ah hah…"
Soobin nodded as she understood now. Seo-eun, who was looking at her smartphone, is also listening to me. So, does that mean that I'm good at explaining?
In fact, my dream was to be a teacher before I fell into this world. Of course, there are so many other things to do now, and I can't do anything because I don't have an ID in the first place. Later, when everything is done, I will try to wash my identity and become a teacher.
This isn't the point anyway. I continued.
"So it's a chain reaction like a domino. Heroes who are tired of the hero's distrust quit being heroes. The number of heroes decreases. Fewer heroes make it slower to cope with crime scenes. That will add to the distrust of the heroes. It's a vicious cycle. In fact, there's a reason why there are fewer B-class and C-class heroes. The country's security depends on three A-class people."
"It would have been nice if the police could have helped them, but the law prohibits police from being dispatched in the event of a crime using superpowers. In fact, a villain alone can wipe out all the cops who have guns, so they won't be a big help."
So, this is the conclusion.
A complete mess.
Heroes are despised and villains are growing in number.
There are too many villains compared to the number of heroes.
It's a part where you can see why Stardus is rolling alone.
"…That's why you're getting rid of the villains? You're like a dark hero."
Seo-eun, who was listening quietly, was sarcastic. Ugh, Seo-eun. You have been nice to me for the past few days, and now you're back on track.
"…I'm not a dark hero. I'm just interested in the fate of Korea."
"You're not just doing that woman's job because you like Stardus, right?"
"Hey, Seo-eun. What do you mean by 'that woman'? You have to speak nicely."
But that's true.
How did she figure that out?
But in this situation, it's a waste to admit it right away.
I changed the topic nonchalantly.
"It's not that, it's just that I feel uncomfortable…"
"I also think that you're very interested in Stardus."
Soobin cut me off and offered me a counterargument.
Soobin cut me off. Our nice Soobin.
When I say something, Soobin, who was always scared and teared up, only goes away…
I raised a tiger cub.
The girls suddenly gazed at me.
As her gaze looked like she was interrogating me, I was taken abashed.
"Now, now, I'm interested in her? Yeah, it's true that I'm interested in her. But that doesn't matter. Because there are no other heroes than Stardus. And a villain needs a hero to be a villain, right? So… I mean. Yeah, contrast structure. I've set Stardus up as my arch energy for now…"
I found myself making excuses before I knew it. Wait, why am I making excuses for this?
Still, Seo-eun was looking at me with a suspicious look. Seo-eun, what's wrong with you? It's unfair.
"Anyway! That's not the point. Let's start planning another terrorist attack."
Seo-eun's interest was shifted to another place besides Stardus.
"Terrorist attack? Again?"
"Yeah. Well, my affinity has gone up too high. It's not exactly likability, but the expectation? Anyway, the only way to lower it again is massive terrorism."
"Haa… When are you going to prepare that?"
"Don't worry. I'm going to take a break for a while after this terrorist attack."
I said with a smile at Seo-eun's grumbling.
"You're going to take a break? Really? Then shall we go on a trip?"
"A trip?"
When I saw Seo-eun's sparkling eyes, I unknowingly affirmed.
"Sure, a trip. That sounds great. Let's go after this."
"Yay! You promised!"
Then suddenly, Seo-eun ran somewhere.
Wait, I told you to prepare a terrorist attack with me…She's not going to prepare for the trip, is she?
Soobin just smiled quietly at us.
