A Misunderstood Mentor - Chapter 7 - The Truth Is That I Knew That Everyone Is a Nice Person (Except Nerissa)
ISO is Recruiting Translators!
Have a dropped novel you want to read more chapters of?
"You are banished from the party."
Ten years ago, on the way to conquer the Desert Labyrinth, the warrior Rick spoke those words to me.
He was a calm, cool, collected leader-like person, always clad in that black armor of his. Hearing those words, I averted my eyes.
I always knew I was a burden to this party. My party was how I, as talentless as I was, got to my current level.
"Okay. I'll get my stuff and leave tonight."
"No. Get out now."
A new voice, one of the priestess Sasha, cut in. Her healing magic had saved me who knows how many times. And every single time, she saved me from near-death without a complaint.
"Can't I have one last dinner with you guys?"
If there was one thing I was confident in, it was handling the relatively minor things like cooking and other chores.
"Wait, really, well then… N-No, you can't! Leave! Now!"
Sasha seemed to waver for a bit, but in the end, she strongly refused.
"I see. It was fun while it lasted. Please take care of Alice for me."
Alice was quietly sleeping in a corner of the tent. She'd probably cry once she knew I was gone. But she'd forget me all the same; that's how children were.
I lovingly rubbed her head, and she started to smile in her sleep.
I put all my stuff in my bag, excepting my sword and shield. It wasn't like I was ever going to use them again, anyways.
"Wait."
The thief Butz stopped me outside of the tent. His excellent crisis-sensing abilities had saved me many times after getting caught in traps.
"That necklace is Nerissa's. Give it back."
Nerissa told me to never take it off when she put the necklace on me. But I was leaving the party. What did this necklace have to do with me?
"Alright. I'll take it off."
Just when the bell on the necklace softly ringed as I was pulling it off, a white light suddenly erupted out of the bell.
"Tsk, teleportation magic. That f*cking old lady was listening…"
Butz ripped off the necklace and smashed it onto the ground. But the light didn't stop.
"Sh*t, she's coming. Rick, Sasha, stall for time."
I had absolutely no idea what was happening. I just stood still in confusion.
"What are you doing? You're out of the party. Get out of here!"
It was the first time I heard Rick raising his voice.
"Yeah. Go. You don't deserve to be an adventurer."
Sasha was casting some kind of magic at the bell.
"What the f*ck is happening here?"
Everything smelled fishy. Their harsh words of kicking me out of the party seemed… too emotionless.
The light emitting from the necklace burst into a fountain of light.
"What the h*ll are you guys thinking?"
The Grand Sage Nerissa appeared in the midst of the light.
She occupied the first spot on the adventurer rankings since ages ago. Nerissa Lucia Ashtall Tsilt, an immortal elf who lived for over a millennium, had the typical long and pointed ears endemic to elves, shoulder-length silver hair, and droopy grey eyes. Her ethereal beauty long surpassed even the prettiest human; despite her age, she only looked around twenty-five.
There were tales of her epic battle against the Ancient Dragon being sung by bards all over the world.
And such a legendary figure was glaring at us.
"I'm using my authority to kick Takumi out of the party. Let's leave it at this."
"He's already at his limits. My healing can't keep up. Sooner or later, he'll die."
"He's just too weak. Not at all fit for our high-level party. Get a f*cking clue."
I wondered if everyone was trying to think of how to get me out of the party while Nerissa was away.
But even without doing all this, I didn't believe that Nerissa needed me as weak as I was. Why not let me leave the party normally?
"I will not let that happen. Takumi will live with me, forever."
Nerissa called out my name.
Back when I failed my adventurer advancement test, Nerissa pulled some strings to pass me and put me into the party. I still didn't know why she did that.
She tried to walk closer to me.
However, the three other party members stood in her way.
"Get out of my way. You three can't beat me."
It did seem to be that way.
While Rick was high up in the rankings, he was nowhere near Nerissa's level.
"Why? We can still function as a party even without Takumi."
"Yeah, our fighting strength wouldn't even decrease by a single millimeter."
"Without him dragging us down, we might even be stronger."
Tears blurred my vision.
It was an act. It was all an act to get me to leave.
"How would you shallow people only caring about power know a single thing about Takumi? Have you ever thought about why Alice, even as powerful as she is, only cares about Takumi?"
The reason why Alice is only really close to me?
It wasn't because I found her first?
"…Leave, Takumi. We can buy you a little bit of time."
"Thanks for everything. Your food was always good."
"Go and don't look back."
The three of them ignored Nerissa's question.
"So you do know. And you still want to let Takumi go."
Nerissa's magic got visibly angrier.
I didn't really understand a single thing.
But if this is what my friends thought, then so be it.
"Thanks for everything, guys. I'll be off."
I came into this world longing for adventure.
The reason I went as high as I did was all because of my friends. I had no talent, after all. I left behind my time as an adventurer and ran as fast as I could.
"Wait, Takumi. Don't just think you can leave. I'll deal with you three in a second…!? Alice!"
For the first time, Nerissa raised her voice. Alice woke up and had left the tent. For just an instant, I turned back to look at Alice.
"Hey, where's Takumi?"
Still half-asleep, Alice rubbed her eyes and looked around.
"Alice, Nerissa bullied Takumi and he ran away."
"Y-Yeah, it's all her fault."
"Beat, beat her up!"
"You f*cking… Wait, Alice, calm down! I didn't do anything bad. Don't cry. Don't cry, okay?"
Although I heard the sound of an explosion, I didn't turn back. I kept running straight forwards.
"Takumi!"
Nerissa's voice echoed through the area.
"No matter where you go, I will definitely find you!"
And for the ten years after, I pretty much never left the mountain. I never expected to meet her again, but here she was. I had thought that she would've already given up looking for me. But, she never did.
"Takumi, these ten years felt longer than the other thousand I've lived for."
Facing her unchanged features, I couldn't help but remember the events of a decade ago like yesterday.
"I won't let you go ever again."
After a decade-long separation, they met again.
And such began their destined confrontation.

A Misunderstood Mentor - Chapter 8 - I'd Like You All to Leave, If Possible
ISO is Recruiting Translators!
Have a dropped novel you want to read more chapters of?
"Alice's disciple Reia and the Ancient Dragon's granddaughter Noiria. So this is who you've been hanging out with lately."
Nerissa wore a smile as she calmly evaluated the two ladies.
"Like always, Takumi attracts strong people to himself… Including me."
Inside of the save, four people sat around a fire. Across from me was Nerissa, to my right Reia, and to my left Noiria. There was still some food left in the pot, but nobody was even thinking of eating.
The room's mood felt like it was crushing me.
Reia was glaring at Nerissa with bloodlust in her eyes.
It was a bit hard to speak, but even so, I had to. I finally spoke my first word to Nerissa in around ten years.
"…Why'd you come here?"
"Didn't I already say? I won't let you go ever again."
I heard the sound of something snapping.
Reia's chopsticks had completely split into four.
"And what do you mean by that?"
While blushing for some odd reason, Reia interrogated Nerissa.
"I mean what I said. Forever and ever, Takumi and I will be together and never be apart."
"W-W-W-Wait so you mean in the bath and the toilet and in b-b-bed too… Just what, are you serious!?"
"Of course, that's a given. We'll be together forever."
Steam swooshed out of Reia's ears.
"D-Do you think it's a good for an u-unmarried man and woman to do those sorts of things!?"
…I felt like I said the exact same words to her yesterday. Hypocrite much?
"How innocent. Have you done it yet, Takumi?"
"N-N-No I haven't."
I wondered what became of my old party's priestess, Sasha. The sexual harassment still hasn't changed.
"Takumi, may I please kill this Grand Sage person?"
Reia's eyes were serious.
"So you want to kill me? Interesting."
Oh how I wished everyone could just get along.
"Humph."
Noiria broke her earlier silence.
"Don't you think that'd be a problem? This cave is too small for four people to live in."
Hm? Four people?
"Wait, black lizard, do you want to live here?"
"Wait, didn't I already say? Takumi will become the Dragon King. He needs a dragon wife, or in other words, me."
She never said a thing. I never heard a thing. I'm also not even becoming the Dragon King in the first place.
"Haha, aren't you popular, Takumi? Well, I don't mind how many wives you have. Okay, let's remodel this cave. The bedroom especially."
"I like the way you think, Grand Sage Nerissa. I heard about you from my grandpa. Let's get along with each other."
I felt like Nerissa and Noiria were plotting something. The situation seemed to be slowly going out of control. What was this with harem situation? Stop. I was still a virgin.
"Takumi."
Reia raised her katana.
"I'm fed up with this sh*t, so I think I'll just kill them all."
Scary. Her eyes were completely still.
Could she speak clearly? Was she okay?
Rick, Sasha, Butz.
Please lend me your power.
"Nerissa."
"Hm? What is it, Takumi?"
I had no one I could really call a teacher.
But the person who taught me all about adventuring was Nerissa. She worked me as hard as a slave, but I really was grateful. However, I was no longer an adventurer. Right now, I lived peacefully with nature deep in the mountains.
"I'm sorry, but please leave. I don't want to be with you."
"Oh?"
The mood felt even more crushing.
Nerissa was gently staring at me.
"Are you going against me, Takumi?"
Nerissa held the strongest magic power for most of human history.
I knew that my life would be gone if she really got angry. I never went against her orders when I was an adventurer.
But now is different.
My home was too precious for me to lose.
"I wouldn't expect anything less. Well said. I believe every word. If you said the same thing to me, after destroying everything around me, I would resign myself to death."
No, really, why did this girl have to make everything more complicated?
Reia continued, "We have cut off our sexual desires in the pursuit of knowledge. The two of us alone will seek enlightenment on the martial path. It's like that, isn't it?"
"Y-Yeah. Good that you get it. That's exactly right."
I really wanted to say that she was also a bother, but well, someone would probably die in that case.
"Are you fine with this, Takumi? Don't you know what will happen if you disobey me?"
A faint smile showed on Nerissa's face.
An archaic smile.[note]A smile used by archaic Greek sculptors.[/note]
Her lips were smiling, but her eyes were dead serious. It was something I only saw when Nerissa was truly mad. I instantly started to regret trying to look cool. My body started trembling; my past trauma was revived.
I was on the verge of having an…accident.
"Please wait, Takumi. I know from how much you're trembling in excitement that you want to fight. But please leave this to me."
Misunderstanding my trembling, Reia stood up.
"Grand Sage Nerissa, as Takumi's disciple, I will be your opponent. Do you accept?"
She drew her katana.
"From Alice's disciple to Takumi's, huh. Interesting. Alright, you can be my opponent."
An eerie aura erupted out of Nerissa's body.
The two of them left the cave and went out into the grasslands beyond.
"Yo! Ha! Fu!"
Breathing rather weirdly, Noiria was squatting behind me.
"W-What are you doing, Noiria?"
"Oh, nothing. Just preparing to fight whoever wins."
"Huh? Why?"
"Huh? Whoever survives the battle between the three of us stays here. Isn't that the rule?"
No, it wasn't. I didn't want a harem, but neither did I want a battle royale.
"Y-You guys, you can't kill. Please stop just before that happens."
I didn't know if my voice reached the two fighting.
They stood still, fighting with their eyes.
I knew the level of Nerissa's strength. To my knowledge, there was nobody in this world other than Alice who could stop her. As Alice's disciple, Reia would have it hard. Or so I thought.
I did not know the true extent of Reia's power.
"Let's start."
And so, the demon god descended.

A Misunderstood Mentor - Chapter 9 - Something in the Battle
ISO is Recruiting Translators!
Have a dropped novel you want to read more chapters of?
"Let's start."
As Reia whispered those two words, the wind by her feet stirred. Gales blew, and it seemed almost as if Reia was being protected by a small tornado. Her long black hair fluttered, and as the breeze picked up in speed, the locks of her fine hair started to spread apart. And at the same time, Reia's black eyes became dyed in scarlet.
"She couldn't have!"
Noiria's voice rose up a notch.
"Divine possession!?"
Reia kicked off the ground with her foot, leaving a small crater behind. She leapt next to Nerissa in an instant, reaching speeds that far exceeded what was possible by a human.
"Hah, this is more than I expected."
Nerissa flashed a happy smile. Whenever she fought a strong enemy, she would always narrow her eyes and raise her lips.
Reia, with her right hand, made a side swing at Nerissa.
An afterimage.
Nerissa had already replaced her main body with a magically-created illusion, which simply fizzled out upon being attacked.
The trees behind her suffered a much worser fate; they were all split into two.
"Slicing the dimension itself? Maybe even I'd be hurt by that."
Nerissa appeared above Reia, floating midair.
"An eastern mystical technique, divine possession. It's the first time I've seen those eyes. I've heard that the entire body is possessed by a god to fight, but is that true? From what I see, it seems to be just a fake?"
"Do you really think so?"
Reia's voice seemed to have changed.
It sounded more like a mix of a female's and a male's.
And her face looked more like a demon had possessed her rather than a deity,
"Interesting. So the real thing came out."
Nerissa cast of the cloak she was wearing.
It was a cloak that suppressed her power.
Without anything to suppress her magic, the area around Nerissa became filled with magical power, to the point of it being clearly visible.
Countless amounts of magic circles formed at the flick of her finger. She raised her arms and played the sky as if it was a keyboard, causing me to lose myself in its splendor.
However, it was the overture[note]The furigana, a script that dictates reading, has this word read as the English word "prelude," referring to the musical term as well as the English meaning "the start of something." Since prelude is quite commonly found outside of music terms in English, I'm using overture, which is less common. TL;DR:The original Japanese has more musical connotations.[/note] to hell.
A key she would play, and a magic circle in the air would light up and shoot a beam at Reia. It was Nerissa's ultimate attack.
A storm of laser beams were spat at Reia faster than the translator could finish, which was maybe less than a second. However, Reia did not dodge, for she had no need to.
"Descent of a Thousand Demons."[note]Lit. A Thousand Asuras. Didn't want to put Asuras in a fantasy novel with no Buddhism…[/note]
It was a technique's name.
Reia appeared to have suddenly grown another thousand arms, apparating out of nowhere. The arms cut each and every beam into tiny pieces, scattering them away.
"Amazing. So it's at this level?"
Noiria raised her voice in excitement.
"I can't beat those two in my current form. Takumi, do I have permission to switch to my dragon form?"
"No, don't. You have nothing to do with this. Also, just in case a stray attack comes flying at us, guard please."
I began regretting my decision to stay and watch this superhuman fight.
One beam comes flying at me, and I'm dead.
"Y-You guys! Your body health is more important than winning! You lose if you kill your opponent! Do you hear meeeee!"
I frantically screamed, but I got no response.
I could only wish that they heard it in their hearts.
"I see, you're saying that you'd instantly make their opponent faint if it were you."
"Ah, ahhhhh. That's exactly right. Good that you get it."
This was not the time to say stuff like that.
Though it would be nice if I could actually instantly stop them from fighting.
"It does seem to appear that your sword technique is a mishmash of various styles. But none of them are mastered. Are you unable to stay in one place?"
"…Shut up. Shut up and fight."
In the midst of the battle, I could faintly hear their voices.
"I can tell that a normal person can't accept your power. To be envied, to be feared, and before long, everyone turns against you."
"I told you to f*cking shut up!"
She seemed to be disturbed.
And the slightest lapse in concentration was nothing short of a death sentence in a high-level fight. Reia missed cutting down a single beam and just barely deflected it with her katana.
Nerisssa didn't miss that opening.
"Are you comfortable being with Takumi?"
"!?"
Teleportation.
Nerissa abruptly appeared right in front of Reia. In her hands was a rapidly compressing sphere of light.
"Surging Sphere・Kai"[note]波動球・塊(カイ)[/note]
The light ball hit Reia directly on her stomach. It exploded with a flash, and Reia was sent flying across the ground, bouncing on its hard surface a few times before landing.
"Rei!"
"It's not over yet."
Panicking, I started to run over to her, but she had already gotten up.
"Don't stop me, Takumi! The battle's not over yet!"
I momentarily couldn't think of a response, her resolution so intense.
However, I had to stop them.
Reia's divine possession had already stopped and she was in shambles.
"Can you not feel pain? The results of pursuing strength heedless of death, huh. However, is it not over? I've already hit you."
"Y-You've only hit me with magic. I still haven't lost yet!"
Would they ever listen to my rules?
"You've lost. Magic for me is what your katana is for you."
"I-I…I can still!"
Reia took a light hold of her katana, staring at it. And then, giving up, she crumpled down.
"Nerissa."
I turned towards the Grand Sage.
"What is it, Takumi? If you want to congratulate me for winning, a kiss will do."
"I have a request for you."
It was something that I could not let go of.
But compromising is always an option.
"I can't be with you forever, but you can come here anytime. I'll always keep the transportation bell on me just like old times. So, why don't you go home for today?"
I started at Nerissa without averting my eyes.
She sighed.
"It can't be helped. I do owe you a favor, after all. Also, I have one more thing to say."
Nerissa looked at Reia.
She was on her knees, trying desperately not to cry.
"This is the same with Alice. It cannot last long."
"I know. It's going to be fine."
"Hah, you're as… no, nevermind. I'm not going to say anything else."
Picking up her fallen cloak, she put it back on and started to walk to Noiria.
"Let's go, dragon girl. I'll teleport you with me."
"Ah, I'm fine. I'm going to be living with Takumi. Ah, wait, don't touch me there! My horn is sensitive, okay? Stop it!"
Nerissa, for the first time today, did something good. Finally, I was rid of those two.
"Rei, are you okay?"
It was as if those words were a trigger. Reia immediately began to cling to my legs.
Her repressed feelings all let out at once in the form of quiet sobbing. It likely wasn't only from her fight against Nerissa; she had always been fighting alone.
And then, as I stood there, Reia by my feet, I could hear her sobs gradually louden. She was wailing as hard as a child.
I crouched down and softly brushed her hair.
I might've heard a leg bone crack from her strength, but I chose to quietly endure.
After all, even though only Reia thought so, she was nominally my disciple.

A Misunderstood Mentor 10 – A Crimson and Gold Coloured Break
November 9, 2021Zathael
If you haven't seen my post regarding picking up this series I recommend you read it here first before continuing with this chapter.
Two characters in the previous translation have names different from the raw. I will be using the original names in my translations.
The character previously referred to as Nerissa is now Nuruhachi. As a side note her full name is Nu Rushia Hashtall Chilt hence Nuruhachi for short.
The character previously referred to as Noiria is now Chloe.
"Here, take this. Use it to blow your nose"
"Sniff, thank you very much."
Reia finally stopped crying and blew her nose.
"Sorry Takumi-san"
"Don't worry about it. She's a great sage after all. There's hardly anyone that can defeat her"
The only time I'd ever seen Nuruhachi lose was the day we took Alice from the dungeon.
"I even broke the ban and touched Takumi-san. You had to overdo it in order to suppress your power right? You seem to be in considerable pain"
"It's alright, don't worry about it"
There's no ways it's alright.
The leg she was holding is in extreme pain.
"Ku…"
Honestly I really want to cry.
Reia bites her lips in frustration.
"…I am… still inexperienced. At that moment, I was swayed by Nuruhachi's words"
Now that she mentions it, at that time, Nuruhachi was saying something to Reia.
A tactic that hasn't changed after ten years.
Living for a long time has made her excel at psychological warfare.
"I have a past that I have not shared with anyone, not even Master Alice. Nuruhachi brought up that past"
This is bad.
This is that thing where she reflects on the past and the conversation becomes longer.
There is still rice that needs to be harvested today. I need to keep this brief.
"Its okay, I'll understand even if you don't tell me everything"
"It can't be! No… as expected of Takumi-san. Simply by looking into my eyes, you were able to see into my whole past"
"I'm glad you understand, that is exactly right"
I have succeeded in saving time.
Besides if possible, I wouldn't like to listen to something as heavy as a past that she hasn't told anyone else,
"What should I do in order to move on from that past?"
"Isn't it fine just to not care about that sort of thing?"
Its a rather frank answer from personal experience.
Its inevitable to hesitate and stress over the past.
Thinking back on the times when I was the weakest adventurer simply makes me sad.
"Within nature, things like the past feel insignificant"
"While knowing my past, you can still call it insignificant"
"Ah, aah. A past of that level will fly away if the wind blows"
Honestly I know absolutely nothing about that past.
That reminds me, Nuruhachi said that after he near-death training, she no longer felt pain.
Its scary to imagine.
I walked together with Reia through the field and we soon arrived at the rice I had planted.
The scenery changed from green to gold.
It was deep into autumn and the water had drained from the paddy fields, leaving drooping heads of rice lined up.
As the wind blew the heads swayed.
The rice was waving in the wind.1
As the wind passed over the field, the swaying heads formed waves of gold.
"Wah"
Reia gazed at that scene like a child.
"This is the same as Alice. It will not continue for long"
I remember the words that Nuruhachi left me.
When we picked up Alice, I decided to raise her.
But, with me by her side, everything came crashing down.
At that time, I didn't choose to accept my banishment and quit being an adventurer in order to run from Nuruhachi.
It became impossible for me who was the weakest to be beside Alice.
While massaging my injured leg, I made a small resolution.
It may have been a meaningless thing.
But, even so I'll give it a try.
I'll once again train my body.
Ten years after retiring as an adventurer, my body has grown weak to the point where I probably wouldn't even win against a goblin.
Until Reia is convinced to finally leaves this place.
Even if I don't teach her, Reia is sure to become stronger on her own.
One day, strong enough to compare to Nuruhachi and Alice.
Until that time comes, I can at least play the part of a somewhat decent teacher.
"Takumi-san please have a look, an amazing number have appeared"
On the rice, crimson coloured dragonfly known as akibeni had gathered.
The golden field had been dyed with red.
And in the center was Reia dancing.
If I recall correctly it was an dance from the east.
Surrounded by crimson and gold, I was captivated by Reia's wondrous dance.
When she's smiling normally, shes simply a beautiful young lady.
Its hard to imagine its the same Reia that was possessed by a god and fighting with the appearance of a demon.
"Be careful, they lay their eggs in people"
"Eeeeh!"
"They open up holes in peoples skin to lay the eggs inside. When the eggs hatch they begin to eat at the flesh…"
"I- I- I- Is that true? Really?"
"It'd be scary if it was"
"Takumi-san…!"
The two of us harvested the rice while making idle talk.
Unlike peeling potatoes, Reia was immediately a master at rice harvesting.
It seems that she is fine as long as it is not precise work.
That reminds me, in order to turn the large amount of potatoes into soup, I'll need mou milk.
I don't really want to leave the mountain but, I'll need to go down to the town to buy mou milk.
While I'm at it, I'll buy a cheap sword and shield as well.
My equipment from my adventuring days was all left behind.
"Takumi-san, somehow my body feels light. I've …probably… become much stronger"
Reia harvested the rice and she danced and spun around.
"Next time I will definitely win. After hugging Takumi-san as lot, I can feel a power dwelling within me even greater than during divine possession"
Another one of her fits.
Rather than a god it feels more like a demon that descends.
Maybe I should have talked to Nuruhachi and had her inspected.
"W- Well, lets not rush, take it easy. Besides, it seems Nuruhachi will be coming from time to time. Next time just draw out more power as you fight"
"Yes, Takumi-san"
I became worried by Reia who answered energetically.
If they repeat that kind of battle every time, I will be hit by a stray attack and die.
I look at the bell attached to my waist.
As expected I'm reluctant to wear it as a necklace like I did before.
Besides she's probably going to come everyday, although if possible I'd like for her to limit it to once a week.
While thinking that, as the days passed, Nuruhachi never came to visit.
Nuruhachi had died in a fight with Alice.
It wasn't until slightly later that the news arrived.
Translator's Notes:
1: The original text is a japanese word that means rice waving in the wind which is why the same sentence is seemingly repeated twice.

Nuruhachi -> Nerissa because: Nuruhachi, being an initial, should be translated as NRHC (or NLAT going by my TL of the name), doesn't really sound like a name. Nuruhachi also doesn't sound like a name that people actually use.
Kuroe -> Noiria keeps the クロ in the name (Noir being French for black, and also a common borrowed word in English, e.g. film noir) while also sounding like an actual name.

I would rather keep the names of the characters the same as in the novel. I understand that Nerissa is more natural than Nuruhachi but I feel there is some leeway as a translation. In regards to Kuroe/Chloe over Noiria I don't think that the nuance of 'black' in her name is a good enough reason to change it. There's also downsides like Chiharu no longer being (part of) Nuruhachi backwards. I'm not trying to say that you're wrong or that I'm right, both options have merits, it's just a matter of preference. Thanks for the comment though, happy to hear more opinions on this.

A Misunderstood Mentor Interlude – Alice and the Great Sage
November 16, 2021Zathael
I could tell that she was approaching.
There's only one person who can calmly walk through my barrier as if it didn't affect them.
The numerous layers of the barrier that could stop even a dragon were blown away one by one like bubbles of soap.
"So you've come, Alice"
The abandoned castle of a ruined kingdom.
While seated on the throne, Alice appeared before me.
Her appearance had changed from that of a girl to a young lady in the ten years since I last saw her.
"You've become prettier"
"Your age is beginning to show, Nuruhachi"
At Alice's provocation, I almost instinctively fired a spell.
Magic will not affect Alice.
The attack of the ancient dragon who had stored thousands of years of mana was blown away by Alice with a single roar.1
The only way to defeat Alice was in hand to hand combat.
It's extremely annoying.
The feeling of having my, a mages, everything denied.
"Nuruhachi, do you have any last words?"
"None at all"
Alice approached slowly.
Not even hiding her overflowing killing intent.
Its incomparable to ten years ago.
I had expected that Alice would come here.
That morning when she met Takumi, and when I was fighting Reia, the whole time I could feel myself being watched from the outside.
It was not magic.
Rather, she simply wanted to see Takumi.
With that thought alone, Alice was watching Takumi from thousands of miles away.
It was too abnormal as always, enough to make me laugh.
I look at the great sword that Alice has equipped.
It was the sword that I had bought for Takumi.
Ever since Takumi left, Alice had always kept that sword on her, and she came to be called a sword saint as a result. However Alice wasn't really a swordsman or anything.
A simple strike.
Alice's attacks where nothing more than that.
That strike alone surpasses attacks from all over the world.
There was only one method to counter this.
I remove my cloak of control without letting any of my mana leak outside, amplifying it all within my body.
My body has been strengthened dramatically.
It's unfortunate that my excellent proportions have gone to waste, but it could not be helped.
My stature swells over twice as much, making the clothes I was wearing burst, leaving only my elastic leather undergarments remaining.2
"Nuruhachi, that's disgusting"
"I already know, shut up"
120% full power physical strengthening.
It was my first time attempting to overcome my limits.
My body that cannot withstand this power decays and is regenerated, strengthening me even further.
When this is over my mana will wither, and I will likely be unable to move for a while.
"Come"
With the same words as her disciple, Alice draws near.
No retreat! No pleasantries! No thoughts!
A head-on exchange of blows!
Alice's fist draws near to my face.
Without dodging I drive my fist into Alice's face with all my power.
The sound of a great explosion rings out as everything is blown away.
Without leaving a trace behind, the wreckage of the abandoned castle is scattered about.
In the remains of the throne that could barely hold its shape, Alice was sitting.
I was buried into the wall that was before me.
My body could not move at all.
Even if I was able to escape the wall the result would be the same.
All my mana had been depleted.
Like a deflated balloon, or the husk of an insect.
It was a single attack.
To think that the difference was this great.
I could not even see the depths of Alice's power.
"Are you not going to finish me off?"
"Nah, like this you wont be able to see Takumi for a while. Thats enough"
As she says, with my mana exhausted I wont be able to teleport.
I'd be happy if Takumi was at least slightly worried about me.
Until I recover, lets pretend to be dead.
"…..Hey, could I ask you one thing?"
"No"
I made a clearly unpleasant face.
I suppose I'll have to try read her mind by drawing on my pitiful remaining mana.
"Why did you send Reia to Takumi?"
Alice's thoughts flow into my head.
I cough as a a torrent of blood flows from my nose.
What is this feeling.
Impossible.
Is it possible for a person hold such emotions.
It hurts, it hurtsss.
My head hurts. I can't do this, my brain is going to collapse.
I sever my link to her mind.
"Buhaa.."
I take a deep breath and look at Alice.
I quake at Alice who is gazing at me composedly while sitting upon the throne.
What could she be thinking with that calm composure.
As expected, Alice lives only for Takumi's sake.
Not only that, she believes him to be an existence far beyond her own.
Humanities strongest mistaking humanities weakest to be the strongest.
Normally it would be impossible.
Impossible, the reason being...
"I kind of understand"
With a snapping sound, I slowly crawl out of the wall.
My mana has already been exhausted.
There is not a single thing I can do.
However, there is something I cannot yield over.
"Everyone is born with a different capacity"3
I walk towards Alice while slowly collecting the mana dispersed around me.
"Those with only a small capacity are ones that can only take in a small amount. Just enough to protect their families."
Most humans are around that level.
Satisfied to live and die like that.
"Those with a large capacity are ones who can take in a lot of things. Immense fortunes, great empires, there are people with the capacity to make everything within the world theirs"
The capacity of the chosen kings. Those that will leave their names in history.
"But, those who hold such capacity, will not be able to accept you or me"
Great power evokes jealousy in people, fear, and eventually persecution.
Even after living for over a thousand years, I was unable to find a person capable of accepting me.
Apart from one person.
"It can't be anyone except Takumi, for me, and for you"
A broken capacity.
The capacity that every one is born with, Takumi does not have.
"Hey, Nuruhachi, does this mean that I've, become stronger?"
I think back to Takumi brandishing the great sword the first time I bought it for him.
With that alone, the mana that I thought was completely gone flows out from the depths of my body.
I stand before Alice with my tattered body.
I put on a brave front and smile with all my might.
"Stop already, you'll really die, Nuruhachi"
Alice stands up from the throne.
"Don't look down on me, my name is Nuruhachi. Of the Nu clan, Rushia territory, 372nd head of the Hashtall household, the great sage Chilt"
To fight power with power is foolish.
After coming here I finally understood my final hand.
"Takumi is mine. I won't give him to you"
At those words, Alice throws her fist towards me with no mercy.
I imagine a pipe.
A simple pipe in which power flows through.
I accept the power that is directed at my face, let it flow.
As my body is destroyed, the power circulates into my right hand.
I place that right hand onto Alice's chest
With a thunderous roar, humanities strongest is blown away for the first time in their life.
Translator's Notes:
1: The word used here is kiai which is a short shout made when performing an attacking move. It can also mean fighting spirit/effort.
2: The word used here is leather bondage in katakana and as far as I can tell just refers to the kind of clothing worn during BDSM. If you can think of a better word here let me know.
3: The word here is utsuwa which can mean like a container/vessel, or the ability/capacity to do or be something. This entire monologue uses a lot of metaphor and I don't fully understand it myself so I apologise if its difficult to read.

A Misunderstood Mentor 11 – My First Errand Infinity
November 17, 2021Zathael
"We need mou milk I see. Understood, let me go buy some"
Reia volunteered herself for the task of going to town to buy milk for the potato soup.
Somehow her confident tone made me more worried.
"Nah, don't worry about it. I'll head out so please look after the house"
"No no, I cannot trouble Takumi-san with such things. Please leave it to me. I'll invoke the god Idaten and return as swift as possible"1
"Just go normally!"
Yup its doomed. If I don't do anything my unnecessary troubles will increase.
"Wait a moment, I'll write you a note. 2 litres of mou milk, and with the remaining money, get a cheap sword and shield"
I hand her a bag of money along with a map of the weapon and milk store.
"Leave it to me. I'll risk my life to complete this errand"
Yeah, I don't think that's necessary.
Somehow it gives me a complicated feeling, like I'm sending my child to the battlefield.
"I- I'll leave it to you then. I'm trusting you okay"
It was only afterwards that I would deeply regret trusting her.
How did it come to this.
Reia returned late into the night, when the surroundings were already dark.
I was just about to pick her up as it was getting late when I heard a noise outside the cave.
She's finally returned I thought. However the moment I walked outside I felt faint.
"I- I'm back"
Announced Reia as she avoided my gaze.
She's definitely done something.
"We- Welcome back"
While replying so, I rub my eyes and confirm the situation before me.
Ahh, it wasn't an illusion.
The situation was difficult to accept.
Reia should have been buying mou milk, so why is she carrying an actual mou.
The mou, which was many time larger than Reia, was yawning care-freely on her back.
Not to mention the sword and shield that was supposed to be bought with the leftover money.
There shouldn't have been enough remaining after buying an actual mou, but in Reia's right hand was a sword that at a glance seemed considerably expensive.
A jet black longsword.
The guard and hilt was adorned in gems and the scabbard was also engraved and decorated.
But even more concerning was the charms plastered over the sword with the words 'forbidden' and 'seal' on them.
An extremely sinister aura could be felt emanating from Reia's right hand.
I suppressed the urge to retort that it was clearly a cursed sword.
The reason being there was something even more important to bring up.
"That isn't a shield is it"
"Uh, uhh, no, it isn't"
Reia continues to avoid my gaze.
Sweat trickles down her face.
The thing Reia was holding in her left hand.
Well, not a thing.
"I'm not, a shield"
It spoke.
While holding Reia's hand, It looked at me.
It smiled at me with its eyes closed.2
Standing there was a young elf girl.
"How did it come to this"
I finally ask Reia.
"Young lady, how old are you?"
"Ummm, ummm…."
The girl was counting on her fingers.
She didn't look older than three or four, but she was counting a lot.
"Dunno, lots"
"I see, lots huh"
Elves are a long living race who can be much older than they appear but their development during childhood is similar to humans. Its from around 20 to 100 years that their appearance doesn't change.
This kid is probably around three or four years old.
For now I tie the mou outside and rest the sword in the corner of the cave.
This needs to be dealt with first.
"Then can you give me your name?"
"Uhhhh, ha, ru, nu, uhhhhh, chi, haru...…"
"Chiharu?"
"Yes, Chiharu!"
It seems the girls name is Chiharu.
"That's great. You know your name."
I glare at Reia.
"I- I'm sorry"
According to Reia, Chiharu was left in the custody of the town, but she had lost her memory and forgotten her parents.
They were troubled as there was no elven settlement nearby when Reia walked by and Chiharu called out her name.
Thinking that Reia knew her, they forced Chiharu onto her it seems….
"You really don't know anything about this kid?"
"Yes this should be the first time we've met, but somehow I feel like I've seen her before"
Now that she mentions it, when I look at Chiharu, I also get the feeling I've met her before.
However, where I would have met her I have no idea.
The elves distinctive long pointed ears, semi-long silver hair, slightly sleepy looking grey eyes, plump lips.
Her features were far greater than a humans. In the future she would surely be a beauty.
Recently, very recently, I feel as if I've seen her, but I cannot tell why.
While staring, Chiharu pointed to me and yelled in a great voice.
"Takumi!"
That surprised me.
Reia had yet to call me by name since she returned.
"You know me?"
"Know, Reia and Takumi, know"
The mystery deepens.
"Ha…"
Reia seemed to have an epiphany.
"Takumi-san, could it be that this child is….."
'I'm glad you understand, that's exactly right' I prepare to respond.
"Takumi-san and my child that has come from the future"
My preparations were for nothing. How did she arrive at that conclusion I wonder.
"W- Well if that was the case then everything would make sense. In order to change a hopeless future, this kid has returned to the past in order to warn us. No it would be presumptuous for someone like me to be married to Takumi-san but, maybe the reason why she looks familiar is that she looks similar to us, something like that, it's possible that such a future exists, it would be nice if that was the case, just kidding, n- n- n- not that I was thinking about anything like that, how do I put it, uhh"
Somehow Reia was turning bright red while making some passionate speech, I couldn't really understand so I chose to ignore it.
"Reia, are you alright?"
"I'm fine. I just went a bit strange"
I pat Chiharu's head.
She's cute. If possible I'd like to find her parents somehow.
If Nuruhachi or Chloe comes I'll ask them to help out.
As a fellow elf maybe Nuruhachi will know something.
"Okay, for now lets get some mou milk and make potato soup"
Lets leave the troublesome things for later.
I'm hungry, and things won't be solved immediately anyway.
"Oh yeah, why did you bring back a whole mou rather than just the milk"
"Eh, ah, yes. When I went to buy the milk, the farm was under attack by goblins, so I hunted them down and was given the mou as thanks"
So something like that had happened.
Well Reia is strong so mere goblins wouldn't be a big deal.
"I see, good job"
"Th- Thanks"
At that time, I thought that Reia had defeated two or three goblins at most.
I'd never have expected that Reia had subjugated hundreds of goblins, enough to threaten a country.
Or that the deed would be attributed to me.
A fierce battle against the goblin king that threatened to swallow the world was, without my knowledge, beginning.
Translator's Notes:
1: Skanda, called Idaten in Japanese, is a Buddhist deity known for his great speed.
2: The description used here is nipaa which is a smile like this. Originating from a character in Higurashi who would say that when making this face.
The title of this chapter, hajimete no otsukai infinity, is a possibly a reference to the Japanese variety show, my first errand (hajimete no otsukai) which follows young kids as they do errands for their parents. As for why there is infinity at the end I have no clue. If you have any idea why please leave a comment or contact me so that I can make a better sounding title.

Alright, let's start"
After peeling the skin from the potatoes that Reia had decimated, I thinly sliced them and fried them in the pot.
Then I added onions that I had chopped beforehand, and when the potatoes turned clear I added the stock from yesterdays rabi stew.
I carefully skimmed the scum from the soup, and as the potatoes turned soft, I ground them in a mortar with a wooden spatula before adding mou milk and leaving it to boil.
"Smells good"
In high spirits, Chiharu appeared behind me.
Reia's stomach rumbled like the sound of a growling beast.
After seasoning with pepper and salt, I placed the pot into an icebox.
It will be complete when its been moderately cooled.
"We'll be able to eat in just a moment"
While patting Chiharu's head, the bell of transportation hanging on my waist rang with a ding.
"Hey, this thing, ding ding?"
"Ahh, yes a ding ding. Do you like ding dings Chiharu?"
As I removed it from my waist to pass it to her, Chiharu shook her head.
"Wrong. I like when Takumi has it"
"Eh? Is that so? Does it ring more?"
"Yeah, it's good you wear it"
She smiled happily with her eyes shut.1
Cute. Cute is justice. Enough to make me feel like all my troubles don't matter. I patted Chiharu's head even more.
"Alright, it should be good now"
As I removed the pot from the icebox, the cold air and smell of potatoes entered my nose.
This is more of a summer dish but, if a large portion of potatoes needs to be cooked, this is definitely the best.
As a final garnish, I sprinkle some crushed parsley on top.
"Sorry for the wait, the cold vichyssoise is complete"2
"Wah"
"Wah"
Their similar reactions somehow made me look at Reia as a child.
"I eat here"
Chiharu sat on my lap.
"Then I will also….."
"Wait, what are you doing!"
I stopped Reia as she attempted to go with the flow and sit on my lap.
Somehow, ever since Chiharu came, she's grown a strange sense of rivalry?
"Let's eat"
The two must have been hungry as they were absorbed in their meal.
"Potatoes, potatoes did good job"
"Delicious. The potatoes, despite being a soup, retain their creaminess. Not to mention the rough feel and texture. The potatoes certainly did a good job."
I'm slightly worried about Reia who shares the vocabulary of a young girl.
"There's plenty left so don't rush okay"
"Yesh"
"Yesh"
Looking at the two of them, I smile for a moment.
Somehow this feels like...
"Somehow it feels like we're a family doesn't it"
Reia suprised me by saying what I was thinking
"As expected, Chiharu is our child from the future….."
"Nope. Me, human. Reia, human. Chiharu, elf"
I responded with broken language.
"Chiharu, don't mind if Takumi and Reia are mom and dad"
"See, Chiharu has acknowledged it"
"No she hasn't! This conversation is over!"
This is bad. At this rate I'll gain a wife and kid despite being a virgin. I need to change the topic.
"Oh yeah about that sword. It looks quite expensive, did you have enough money?"
The ominous jet black longsword lying in the corner of the cave.
Somehow, the pattern engraved on the hilt reminded me of the face of a demon.
"Ehh, since no one who could wield this sword was found, it made it's way to this rural town where it was being sold for a low price"
"Who could wield?"
"Yes, the demon sword Soul Eater. It is said to drain the strength of those who carry it and consume their souls"
So it actually was a cursed sword.
Why did she think this was fine.
"It might not compare to the sacred sword Takumicalibur that you entrusted to Alice-sama, but it should serve you well I think"
What the heck is the sacred sword Takumicalibur.
I left the great sword that Nuruhachi bought for me when I left my party but, it seems that its come to be known as a sacred sword while Alice has been using it.
Excalibur.
Masamune.
Takumicalibur.
The cheap sword I used to use has somehow become one of the worlds three great holy swords.
"So that sword, demon sword Soul Eater you say. Have you tried to use it for yourself?"
"Yes, just once inside the shop but my strength was exhausted in an instant and I was close to dying"
"Reia"
"Yes"
"That thing's dangerous, please return it"
"I- It's alright, If it's Takumi-san you'll surely be fine"
This isn't a joke. I'm sure I'd be annihilated the moment I touched that.
For now, it's dangerous so lets store it away somewhere.
"Heyyy, Heyyyy, Takumi"
Perhaps because she's full, Chiharu lied down over my lap.
"Hm? What is it? Tired already?"
"Nuh…. It seems, lots coming"
"Huh?"
The one who noticed first wasn't Reia but Chiharu.
"Takumi-san"
Reia was the second to notice, I was the last to sense their presence.
There's something outside the cave.
A considerable amount of somethings.
"Could it be that I was followed"
Reia peered at the entrance with a grim look.
From there a face slowly emerged.
A goblin.
About as half as tall as an adult man.
Green skin wrapped in dirty tanned cloth, wielding a club in their hand.
A big head compared to their body, wide eyes, and warts on their nose.
It looked towards us with its ugly face and laughed.
And behind it.
""Gobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobu"3
An unending swarm of goblins was waiting for us.
It seems that the goblins who bear a grudge against Reia, who hunted them at the city, had grouped up.
"Reia, this is due to your carelessness. Take care of it immediately"
'Hurry up and save me please, I'm terrified' my heart is screaming.
However, from Reia came a cruel reply.
"Apologies Takumi-san. Because my strength was drained by the demon sword at the shop, I am unable to fight"
Oh yeah, that happened!
"Takumi, Ugly, Lots"
"Apologies, it pains me to trouble Takumi-san with weaklings of this level but, could you please deal with this swiftly"
This is the end.
This is checkmate isn't it?
"Gobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobu"
The goblins flooded inside the cave.
"Understood. Watch closely"
"Yes, Takumi-san"
When I die please take Chiharu and run.
While wishing so, I grab the demon sword Soul Eater.
Rather than goblins, being drained of my strength and dying is better.
As I drew the sword from its sheath the charms with 'forbidden' and 'seal' began to fall off.
"!?"
The moment I pulled out the sword, darkness surged from the demon sword and creeped up my right arm.
Strength, my strength is being drained!
"Nah listen"
A voice sounded directly into my head.
"You don't have even a single bit of strength"
As the goblins were pressing in on us, I was insulted by the demon sword.
Translator's Notes:
1: Same as last chapter, its referring to this smile. Hopefully she stops doing this because I cannot think of a good way to word it.
2: Vichyssoise is a thick soup made of boiled and puréed leeks, onions, potatoes, cream, and chicken stock and traditionally served cold.
3: Do you guys prefer monster noises like this as 'speech' or would you rather I did something like 'the cries of the goblins could be heard'
Chiharu talks like a child as you might expect and has certain quirks in her dialogue that doesn't fully translate into English so I opted to change it a bit to still sound child like. If it looks weird or anything I'm open to suggestions on improving it.

Well, I have to say it's simply unheard of. In all my time as a demon sword it's the first time I've met a human with zero strength"
The demon sword sure talks a lot.
"As expected of Takumi-san, being able to stand calmly despite holding the demon sword Soul Eater. Your strength is so vast that the demon sword cannot drain it"
"I'm glad you understand, that's exactly right"
"Sure it is"
The demon sword berates me once again.
"Give it a break already or I'll get mad, seriously. Listen, every person born in this world has a capacity and from the moment they're born stores energy within. So why, why do you, not have one"
"Uh, Sorry but I don't know"
"Eh, did you say something Takumi-san?"
It seems only I can hear the demon swords voice.
I've become a strange old man who talks to himself.
"Gobu?"
"Gobugobu"
"Goubu Goubu"
Cautious of the demon sword, the goblins halt their advance on us.
To be fair a black smoke-like aura is emanating from the sword in my right hand, making it give off a strange sense of power.
"E- Excuse me demon sword-san, could you please defeat the goblins?"
I asked in a small voice so that Reia and the others would not hear.
"Why should I. It would be one thing if you could supply me strength but why should I cooperate with someone as powerless as you"
I expected as much.
This is bad, I'm still in trouble here.
"That being said, the strength of that young girl over there is quite something. If you let me regularly drain her strength I might think about it"
"O- Only if you promise to properly hold back"
"Of course. It would be a waste to kill such a fine specimen"
The two of us exchange smiles like that of an evil governor and merchant.
In the case of the demon sword it was just my imagination though.
"Well then, let's quickly deal with this"
Countless black orbs spewed out from the demon sword.
"D- Disgusting"
"Don't say that, you'll hurt my feelings"
"Gobu!"
"Gobubu, Goubu!?"
The goblins panicked and tried to flee.
However the black orbs that looked like soot spr!tes, flew after the fleeing goblins at much greater speed.1
"Evil Dragon Darkness Great Flame Bullet"
"Huh, what?"
"The name of the special technique, are you not going to yell it out?"
"It's chuunibyou like and embarrassing so no"2
"Go, Gobu!"
The goblin was blown out of the cave with with a loud bang the moment the black orb touched it.
"Gobu, Gobubu, Go, Gobubu, Gobu, Gobubububu!?"
The goblins flew away like pinballs as the black orbs hit them one by one.
"Kyaa, kyaa, ugly, flying away"
Chiharu was laughing happily.
"Amazing, as expected of Takumi-san. Although it seemed as if you were simply standing there dumbfounded not doing anything, to use a technique of this level. This is what they call a state of selflessness right"
"Y- yes. I'm glad you understand. That's exactly right"
I really was just simply standing there dumbfounded not doing anything though.
"It's over, keep your promise okay"
"O- Of course"
The great number of goblins that entered the cave were, without a single one remaining, blown far into the distance.
As I sheathed the demon sword I ceased to hear its voice.
"Takumi-san"
I extend the demon sword in my left hand towards Reia who had run up to me.
"Reia, to have all your strength drained by a demon sword of this level shows you are still inexperienced"
"A- Apologies. Once again I have felt our difference in strength. Compared to Takumi-san, my power is nothing more that a weak insect"
Reia lowered her head before the demon sword.
Yeah, sorry. The weak insect is actually me.
"In addition to your potato peeling training, you will now train with the demon sword as well. Have your strength drained by the demon sword once a day"
"Yes, thank you very much. It is too great an honour to receive a second task"
Deceiving her like this pains me a bit.
However, this demon sword training would end up increase Reia's strength and later Reia would grow immensely.
"Takumiii"
Chiharu ran up to my side.
"Were you not scared Chiharu?"
"Yeah, ugly went wheee, was funny"
"I see, it was funny"
"Do it again, do it again"
"Sure, another time. There are no more uglies left"
"Thats okay still lots coming"
"Huh?"
I thought it was all over.
But it was only the beginning.
"Gobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobu"
A strange sight appeared outside.
Enough goblins to cover the mountain were approaching the cave.
"…..You're kidding me"
In a panic I tried to draw the demon sword.
But the sword, that was so easy to draw earlier, did not even twitch.
"We are closed for today"
I heard it's voice in my head.
This time it's really over.
The moment I thought that.
A large black object covered the sky.
It landed before my eyes with a thud.
A black dragon.
Jet black wings, scales that covered its body, talons affixed to its giant legs, a long spiked tail, and sharp crimson eyes that were staring right at me.
The pressure was enough to immediately make me feel faint.
However the black dragon didn't attack me.
It stood before me as if to protect me from the goblins
Could this dragon be…..
"Chloe?"
Chloe let out a war cry as if to reply 'That's right'.
With that alone the march of the goblins paused.
It was my first time seeing Chloe in dragon form.
Yup, It's really scary
Along with a roar, a great flame spewed from Chloe's mouth.
"…..Is that Chloe"
At that moment the demon sword, that had been silent, twitched.
Translator's Notes:
1: The word makkuro kurosuke is partially censored here and is a reference to the soot sprites that appear in some Ghibli films.
2: Chuunibyou, or second grade syndrome, is a Japanese term used to describe people, often school children, who believe or act as if they have special powers.

Black Soul Bullet or Deaths Sphere sounds better and is shorter than your Dark Evil Dragon God Bullet.

It's meant to be long although I will admit that it's much more unwieldy in English compared to Japanese (jaryuu ankoku daiendan).

Misunderstood Mentor 14 – Nice to meet you
November 20, 2021Zathael
The fireball that Chloe fired landed in the centre of the goblin swarm.
The sound of an explosion rang out as a pillar of flame rose up.
A wave of scorching heat knocked down the surrounding trees, scattering flames around. In a single moment the goblins in the vicinity were destroyed.
"Foolish creatures, are you not aware who this person is. The king of us dragons, Takumi-dono"
Wrong. I'm not the king of dragons.
Or so I wanted to tell Chloe but her dragon form was scary so I quietly muttered it in my head instead.
"Are you alright Takumi-dono"
"Y- Yeah"
Chloe began to return to her human form.
Will her- Will her clothes be okay I wonder.
I turn away for a moment before looking again.
I don't know how it works but somehow she was properly wearing clothes when she transformed back.
Thank goodness. Her dragon form may be fearsome, but her naked is even more so.
"I made haste to come to this mountain after receiving news that the goblin forces was invading"
"How did it come to this. All Reia did was defeat a few goblins at the farm….."
"I heard a rumour in the town at the base of the mountain that Takumi-dono had single-handedly subjugated enough goblins to threaten a country though….."
I cast a glance at Reia.
Ah, she avoided my gaze.
"It's believed that the one who governs over all goblins, the goblin king, is commanding the goblin forces in order to defeat Takumi-dono"
Its become a very troublesome problem all of a sudden.
Isn't this is at the level of a war.
"In order to swiftly deal with these pests, as subordinates of Takumi-dono, the dragon clan is currently making way to this location while engaging with the goblin forces. However despite how weak the goblins are, we cannot kill them all as there is simply too many of them"
"I- Is that so. Th- Thanks for your hard work"
Were it not for the efforts of the dragons, would even more goblins have come here I wonder.
Thanks dragons. You're really reliable dragons. I still won't be the king of dragons though.
"This situation will likely not be resolved until the one leading them, the goblin king, is defeated. However even with the power of the dragon clan, we are unable to locate the goblin king"
"There's something I've heard before. If I recall correctly, the goblin king is capable of using magic to transform into any form it pleases"
While cracking her knuckles, Reia walks up to Chloe's side.
"It's a hassle but, as expected, we'll have to deal with all the goblins here"
Has her strength that was drained by the demon sword returned I wonder.
Reia's eyes seem to be glittering.
"That's not going to work young miss, the goblins numbers are immeasurable. As if it was infini….."
"Gobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobugobu"
It was just as Chloe said.
A new troop of goblins was ascending up the mountain like a tidal wave.
"Takumi-san, power recharge complete. I'm ready to go now"
Reia spoke while walking out before us.
"You just want to go wild don't you?"
"Th- Thats n- not the case"
She's definitely lying. Her eyes are moving all over the place.
I wonder if she's been building up frustration since earlier when she couldn't fight with her strength drained.
"D- Divine possession, Susanoo (King of Vermilion Sand)"1
Reia tried to change the subject by invoking divine possession.
Is that okay? Using divine possession for that kind of reason?
Reia's body was dyed red and her arms girth swelled by more than double.
"I'm going to scatter them all"
Reia draws her katana and raises a war cry before triumphantly charging straight into the goblin horde.
With the sound of a great impact the goblins were blown away one by one.
"Chloe, do you think the goblin king is hidden amongst the goblin forces?"
"I am unsure, however too many goblins are gathering here. Is there anything suspicious nearby Takumi-dono?"
There is.
Since the beginning I felt a sense of discomfort.
It was strange to think that someone of Reias level would be unable to sense goblins tailing them.
What if the goblin king was disguised in the first place and Reia brought it here.
I look to the demon sword in my right hand, then to Chiharu at the entrance of the cave.
I don't want to suspect that Chiharu is the goblin king.
"This demon sword can speak, isn't that suspicious?"
Chloe stares at the demon sword.
"…..That's not it Takumi-dono"
Chloe asserts definitely.
"An evil dragon deprived of its name. The disgrace of our dragon clan is sealed within that demon sword"
"Damn, I've been found out"
The demon sword clicked its tongue.
It seems it was related to the dragon race.
When I think about it sometimes he did speak with a similar dialect to Chloe.
"That being said, being able to calmly hold the demon sword that was said to be impossible to wield. Takumi-dono is as fearsome as expected"
"Well I guess you could say he's fearsome"
It seems Chloe also can't hear demon sword-san's voice.
Could it be that only I, the one holding it, can hear?
"Again, ugly, lots, flying away"
Chiharu watched happily as Reia sends goblin after goblin flying.
If the demon sword isn't the goblin king then, could Chiharu really be…..?
"Huh, that child…..?"
"Aah, that's not right. Chiharu isn't the goblin king"
"Eh, I know that. After all that child is Nu….."
"Aaaaah, Chloe, don't, say"
Chiharu calls out Chloe's name.
Not just us, she also knows about Chloe.
The mystery behind Chiharu grows deeper.
Now the options for the goblin king has been reduced to one.
Reia brought back three things today.
The demon sword, Chiharu, and…..
I look at it as it moos and yawns carefreely.
If possible I didn't want to suspect that it was the goblin king.
Because if that was the case, we drank the goblin king's milk.
"Chloe, that's not the goblin king is it?"
"I doubt it, but the possibility is there"
As Chloe approaches the mou I make a prayer.
Please, don't let it be the goblin king.
Chloe raises her sharp talons over the mou.
But they never swung down.
A great wind pressure blew Chloe away.
She crashed into the wall right next me.
"Why aren't you fairly perceptive, human"
What had once been a carefree mou had changed its appearance.
Aah, this is the end.
I've drunk the goblin kings milk.
In the midst of my unending despair I observe it's appearance.
It's fundamentally different to the other goblins.
Rather than the height of a child, it stood slender and tall.
Rather than green skin, it was an almost transparent white.
Rather than a large head with wide eyes, it had smooth long blue hair, emerald green eyes, and a handsome face.
Wearing a stylish suit, the goblin king placed his hand on his chest and bowed to me.
"Pleasure to meet you, I am the goblin king, Jusrack"
This isn't the time to be listening to self introductions.
I cannot accept that the milk of goblin king is flowing within my body.
"Takumi, it's okay"
Chiharu points towards the Goblin King Jusrack
A large bottle of mou milk was in it's chest pocket.
"It can only imitate appearance, not abilities. Don't worry. What you all drank was real mou milk"
Thank god, seriously.
Thank you goblin king.
"Now's not the time to be giving thanks"
The demon sword warns me.
"It's pretty strong, the goblin king"
"C- Can you help me out demon sword-san?"
"Impossible. I can only release my power once a day. Didn't I say we were closed?"
How many troubles will I have to overcome before this night is over.
I swore to myself I'd never ask Reia to go on an errand ever again.
"Now then shall we"
The Goblin King Jusrack bowed once again.
His face smiling happily.
"Begin, Takumi-kun"
It appears that we won't be able to talk it out
"N- Nice to meet you"2
With the most amicable smile I can make, I greet the goblin lord.
Translator's Notes:
1: Japanese has a thing called furigana which is like text above a word that is used to indicate how that word is meant to be read. In this case the name 'King of Vermilion Sand' is read as Susanoo. While this is a reference to the Japanese deity, there are no stories related to that title and it was likely only chosen since the characters can be read Susanoo phonetically.
2: This was written in English using katakana whereas the title of this chapter was in written in English using the English alphabet.
And with this we've caught up so daily uploads are over. I know its self inflicted but this was pretty tiring. From now on it'll be one chapter a week although I'm not sure what day yet.
