PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 8

Chapter 8 – Wang Clan's Xuan Yuan Techniques

Red-scaled eels were rare in these waters. Even if there were fishermen who were lucky enough to come across them, the fish would destroy ordinary fishing nets. At the end of the day, it boiled down to luck and strength to be able to catch them.

Of course, if one sailed into the ferocious waters, red-scaled eels were readily found. But God knows how many vicious creatures were hidden in such untamed and dangerous places. Even if you had stepped into Lingtai Realm, your life would be in danger if you were to trespass.

With the harvest of Wang Dinghai's red-scaled eel, the fishermen's excitement peaked. They quickly mended the net and continued to fish with great enthusiasm.

Wang Dinghai, on the other hand, personally led Wang Shouzhe and Gongsun Hui and sailed back to the Dingpu ferry wharf. They met up with a few of the family's generals who had stayed behind and returned to the main residence.

It was getting late, so Wang Shouzhe went to bed after washing up.

That night, Wang Shouzhe explored and entered into the Xuanwu cultivation state. Due to the memory fusion, he was somewhat familiar with it, and stepped into the correct path of cultivation.

Wang Shouzhe's qi refining cultivation method was called "Wang Clan's Xuan Yuan Techniques" which was said to be the earliest techniques handed down by the ancestors.

The profound energy of the cultivation method was calm and peaceful. There were no outstanding advantages and no fatal flaws. However, if you cultivated this method progressively to a more advanced stage, your strength would be more profound.

Qi Refining Realm!

This was the process by which the Xuanwu martial artist cultivated qi to continuously refine his/ her body to be stronger.

The pure qi travelled along his body's network of channels where vital energy circulated and along the acupuncture points to warm them up, stimulating them one after another.

The acupuncture points would produce invisible energy fluctuations rhythmically which would spread throughout the body, compelling the vibration of qi and blood throughout the body.

As the qi flowed through more acupuncture points and orifices, the more intense the rhythm of qi and blood became until the 12 acupuncture points were connected in a closed loop. With that, the consumption of qi also reached its maximum and the rhythm of qi and blood peaked.

Suddenly!

A cool sensation spread instantly from his tailbone to his whole body, Wang Shouzhe felt his scalp tingling, his soul seemed to float out, and a dense qi rose from the top of his head.

The whole process lasted for 10 or so breaths, and the violent rhythm of qi and blood in the body receded like a tidal wave, turning into an invisible energy which converged towards his lower abdomen.

He spurted a mouthful of foul air. Within the empty sea of qi, a new surge of qi emerged like a pool of spring water, quickly filling the sea of qi.

At this moment, Wang Shouzhe could vaguely feel that the new profound energy in his qi sea had grown slightly stronger. His energy which had somewhat depleted seemed to have recovered, as if it had grown marginally stronger.

This completed the cultivation of the Xuan Yuan Techniques for the week. The cultivation of Xuanwu martial artists was an extremely long and cumulative process. These were the foundation blocks for every strong fighter.

However, this process required a massive consumption of qi and blood. Xuanwu practitioners must supplement their food and take pills to increase their qi and blood. Otherwise, the body would not benefit from such cultivation. Instead, the body would collapse due to the deficiency of qi and blood.

The higher the cultivation level, the greater the demand for food and nutrition. This was the reason why every Xuanwu practitioner established his/ her own aristocratic family, using it as a way to seize wealth and abundant resources to feed themselves.

Fortunately, in these couple of days, Wang Shouzhe was well nourished, and he didn't refine his qi and blood.

As such, he continued the cultivation for the second week…

By dawn, Wang Shouzhe had completed four weeks of cultivation in two hours or so. He felt very energetic and had seemingly endless energy. He could clearly feel his cultivation level had made some progress.

However, his body's qi and blood had been depleted. He could feel a sense of "hunger". It was different from the usual feeling of hunger. It was a very strange and clear call of hunger.

At the same time, he felt some "swelling" and discomfort in the acupuncture points and meridians. His experience tells him that in this situation, no matter how strong his qi and blood are, he can't practice anymore. He needs to restore the overburdened acupuncture points and meridians naturally.

But the progress was gratifying! As he combined the memories and experiences of his predecessor to judge the current situation, Wang Shouzhe felt that if he made such progress every day, he would have a chance to break through the shackles and reach the seventh level of the Qi Refining Realm in less than three months.

It was extremely difficult to achieve such an ideal state under normal circumstances. After such a massive consumption of qi and blood, replenishment was required.  Consuming ordinary food would take too long. Only a large amount of spiritual rice and spiritual food would do the job.

But even though Wang Shouzhe was the first in line to receive the clan's cultivation resources, he was only allocated five catties of white jade spirit rice, five catties of spirit fish meat, and five catties of spirit horn yak beef every month.

Although these were high-end ingredients which were rich in energy, they make up five meals at most, which means he could only replenish his diet once every six or seven days. In addition, as the family's top priority, he has a monthly share of one "Xiao Pei Yuan Dan".

Xiao Pei Yuan Dan was a more advanced cultivation resource than spirit food, but with a price tag of 10 Qian gold a piece, it can be said to be extremely expensive. Some of the clansmen at the end of the cultivation chain can only claim one from the clan when they are about to breakthrough at each cultivation level to assist them in their breakthrough.

If he ate spirit food and had a cultivation pill every day, Wang Shouzhe estimated that his cultivation speed could take flight...

"Patriarch, your morning meal is here," his servant, Wang Gui knocked on the door.

"Come in."

Wang Shouzhe got up from the bed, while Wang Gui came in. He put the breakfast aside, and first fetched water to help his master wash up and brush his teeth. Then, he opened the food boxes and set them out, one by one.

"Huh? A big pot of white jade spirit rice porridge and slices of steamed Linggan (spirit yellowcheek) pickles? Wang Shouzhe looked at the dazzling breakfast astonishingly. In addition to the two precious spirit food, there were also some pastries, snacks, side dishes for the porridge, and others.

He knew this morning's meal was exceptional, and that eating spirit food all the time would certainly replenish his qi and blood quickly and maximise his cultivation progress. But in reality, there was a principle of diminishing marginal productivity involved.

If all of one's meals were like this, there would inevitably be lots of wasted nutrition and reduced the cost-benefit ratio.

The Wang clan was too poor to afford such a wasteful form of cultivation. Moreover, the clan has family rules, and even the patriarch couldn't arbitrarily suck the blood of other clansmen.

"Patriarch, this came from Miss Xia He, Madam Gongsun's personal maid." Wang Gui replied honestly, "She said Madam Gongsun made the morning meal. She also brought a message from Madam, who said that the patriarch is now at a critical moment when he is sprinting towards the late Qi Refining Realm, so he should not be contentious."

As expected!

Wang Gui's words confirmed Wang Shouzhe's suspicions that the meal comprised Gongsun Hui's own rations. In particular, the phrase "don't be contentious" also prevented Wang Shouzhe from declining the meal.

Right, best not to let her good intentions and efforts go to waste.

He was confident that the clan's situation would improve. From his efforts yesterday, the revenue from Wang Dinghai's fishing and hunting fleet would more than double in the future, and this would significantly ease the family's resource constraints.

After a meal of spirit food, the slightly deficient qi and blood were immediately replenished. As the food was digested and transformed, the qi and blood would become increasingly abundant.

After eating and drinking his fill, Wang Shouzhe mused about preparing to inspect the family's other properties. Whether he wanted to or not, he was already completely tied to the Ping'an Wang clan.

As the patriarch, it was natural to know every aspect of the family. This was the only way to think holistically and find a way to revive the declining family.

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 9

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 9

Chapter 9 – Golden Fingers

All other transmigrations have cheat systems aka their golden fingers.  As long as they call on the system, they would be able to see various data panels.

But even without the aid of an intelligent system, Wang Shouzhe was no longer afraid. With the experience of dealing with his sixth uncle, Wang Dinghai, he gradually realised there was a huge difference in terms of vision and thinking between himself and the "natives" of this world.

For example, in terms of cultural knowledge, before he transmigrated, he was just an ordinary second-year college graduate who had attended ordinary classes for a few years. On Earth, he was just an insignificant person in a sea of people.

Putting kindergarten aside, he went through six years of primary school, six years of middle and high school, and four years of university! He had a total of 16 years of professional and systematic learning ranging from literature and music, language and philosophy, astronomy and geography, history and politics, mathematics, science, chemistry, computers, and so on.

Most of the knowledge could have settled into the brain's underlying memory, but it was this vast and momentarily unrecalled information that formed Wang Shouzhe's unique vision and logical thinking which were relatively superior to the natives.

In addition, before he transmigrated, all kinds of web posts, short videos and information proliferated in the net. He was always glued to his phone and absorbed all these information.

"Perhaps these are my golden fingers." Wang Shouzhe muttered with a glint in his eye. "As for the system's panels, that's easy. At most, just create soil panels which needs to be updated and maintained frequently."

Just refer to some of the panels in those third-rate online construction games that he used to play.

But before building the panels, he had to personally gain a deeper understand of the clan's structure and the specific details. Although he had fused with his predecessor's memories, that boy was only 18 years old.

He spent a lot of time studying and cultivating, and his understanding of the family's affairs was extremely shallow.

He only knew that three farms, namely the "Fenggu Farm", the "Xingsheng Farm" and the "Xinmao Silkworm Farm" were the pillars of the family's industries. These three farms were far more important than the fishing fleet.

The harvest of each farm was extremely important to the family. Therefore, the three major farms were currently managed by three experienced clan elders.

Today, Wang Shouzhe decide to visit the relatively nearer Fenggu Farm which was under the care of Elder Wang Xiaozhi of the Night ("Xiao") generation*.

"Wang Gui, prepare the carriage." Wang Shouzhe made up his mind and instructed his servant.

Wang Gui responded and rushed off.

On the other hand, Wang Shouzhe strolled leisurely towards the main entrance, while pondering about the Fenggu Farm. Just as he reached the courtyard, he heard a girl's voice greeting him, "Hello, fourth brother."

Wang Shouzhe glanced sideways, and saw two girls, one older and one younger, standing not far away. The older one was in her prime, dressed in light blue and looked quite pretty.

The younger one was only about 11 or 12 years old, with a goat-horn braid, and was also dressed quite beautifully. She was just hiding behind the older girl as she was timid, but she couldn't stop peeking at Wang Shouzhe curiously.

What was rather peculiar was that the two girls were each carrying a large, oddly shaped box which looked rather heavy. They were both carrying a sword each, as if they were heading out.

"It's Luo Tong, fourth younger sister and Luo Jing, fifth younger sister." Wang Shouzhe recognised them at a glance and greeted them with a smile, "Both of you are all dressed up, are you heading out?"

The older one was Wang Luotong, 17 years old while the younger one was Wang Luojing, 12. Like Wang Shouzhe, they were the seventh-generation descendants of ancestor Wang Zhouxuan.

Unlike ancient China, the unwed females of a Xuanwu family have a great amount of autonomy although they would ultimately be married off to form alliances for the clan. Like the men, they received quality education, cultivated, and could even participate in the running of the clan's property.

"Fourth brother." Wang Luotong gave another restrained bow. The flicker of astonishment dissipated almost immediately. "It's nearly harvest time at the farm. Grandfather is too busy to return home, so I'm taking Luojing to visit him."

Wang Luotong's impression of her fourth brother, Wang Shouzhe was that he was rather solemn. When they meet, they would just rush off after greeting each other. It was unlike him to be so kind and pleasant, and to even praise them!

Wang Shouzhe recalled that Wang Luotong and Wang Luojing were the clan's fourth grandfather, Wang Xiaozhi's granddaughters. Their father was the fourth oldest in the sixth-generation descendants, Wang Dingbang, but fourth uncle, Wang Dingbang passed away five years ago.

The Wang's male lineage is ordered according to Yu (universe), Chen (great mansion), Qiong (dome, sky) Xiao (night), Ding (established), Shou (defend, abide by), Zong (model), Shi (archaic: the 13th of 28constellations) without distinction of direct lineage.

Wang Shouzhe's father, Wang Dingyue, was the fifth oldest in the "Ding" fifth-generation descendants while Wang Shouzhe was the fourth in the "Shou" seventh generation. However, Wang Dingyue and Wang Shouzhe were both in the direct line of descent, and the others were only directly related.

The Wang family's female generational names were ordered according to Zhu (pearl), Long (jade with dragon design used to pray for rain), Ling (tinkling of jade pieces), Zhen (treasure), Liu (sparkling stone), Luo (neck-ornament), Li (coloured glaze) and Ying (jade-like gem).

For example, ancestor Wang Longyan, the pillar of the family, was the only surviving third-generation ancestor.

Wang Luotong and Wang Luojing were the fourth and fifth oldest in the seventh generation of girls in the family. Gongsun Hui's daughter, Wang Luomiao was seventh. But Wang Luomiao was the daughter of the official wife and her status in the family was different (i.e. superior).

The bigger the clan, the greater the age gap between the generations.

For example, the seventh-generation Shou or Luo generation. The eldest male, Wang Shouxin, was already 43 years old, older than Wang Dingyue. The youngest in the seventh-generation, Wang Luolan was only five years old.

In addition, there were already many people in the eighth generation, the Zong (male) and Li (females). Wang Zongwei, the eldest was already 20 years old, but when he sees young girls like Wang Luojing and Wang Luolan, he still has to call them, auntie!

Let's put aside the small talk for now.

After a moment's reflection, Wang Shouzhe said, "Are you going to walk there? It so happens that I'm going to visit the Fenggu farm, so you can join me in the carriage."

He knew it would be impossible for the family to provide a carriage for the two girls to travel in, let alone a family general, as times were getting tougher.

It was about 20 miles to Fenggu farm, and they would have to walk for at least an hour. However, this was the Wang's land which had been long developed and so, it was unlikely to pose any danger to the girls.

Furthermore, as female members of the Wang family, they were not physically weak.

"Thank you, fourth brother." Wang Luotong was somewhat flattered and hurriedly thanked him. Wang Luojing also looked slightly happier and said, "Fourth brother is really nice."

"Don't be too happy, fourth brother is going to test your cultivation studies along the way," Wang Shouzhe laughed.

"Ah~," the two sisters immediately felt slightly alarmed. Wang Luojing's pretty little face looked crestfallen. With a look of resignation, she felt it would have been better for them to walk to the farm!

Soon.

Wang Shouzhe's carriage left the main residence under the protection of four generals on yellow horses. Wang Luojing, who was still young and in awe of Wang Shouzhe, fidgeted a little in the carriage, her eyes darting from time to time to the snacks on the small table.

As he was travelling with his two younger sisters, Wang Shouzhe had earlier asked Wang Gui to get some candied fruits and melons. The snacks were placed on a small square table in the middle of the carriage.

"Luotong, I see that your breath seems to be stable at the peak of the second level of the Qi Refining Realm. How long has it been? Are you ready for a breakthrough?" Wang Shouzhe handed over a candied melon over and casually asked.

All Xuanwu practitioners would learn some qi observation techniques where they can usually easily distinguish the general cultivation level of the other party especially if there was a big gap in terms of their cultivation levels.

To be able to cultivate to this level when she was only 17 and female to boot showed that she had pretty good aptitude and that she worked hard.

"Thank you, fourth brother." Wang Luotong took the melon and replied somewhat cautiously. "It's been more than two months. Right now, I'm doing some painstaking work. Grandpa said it would probably only take three months to breakthrough."

When he heard those words, Wang Shouzhe's brow furrowed, "That is too long. Why don't you use the Xiao Pei Yuan Dan to help with the breakthrough? According to the clan rules, you have the right to claim one."

"This ..." Wang Luotong lowered her head and replied somewhat nervously, "Grandpa said the family resources are too tight right now, and it would be some time before we can have the Xiao Pei Yuan Dan."

"Not true," Wang Luojing pouted, "Grandpa said that brother is now at the peak of the third level and needs the cultivation pill more than sister."

"Luojing, don't spout nonsense." Wang Luotong said somewhat anxiously.

"Luojing, tell me," Wang Shouzhe's expression was somewhat grave, "Did Wang Shounuo bully you? If that's really the case, fourth brother will teach him a lesson."

He knew Wang Shounuo was their elder brother from the official mother, and he was almost 20 years old.

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 10

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 10

Chapter 10 – Fenggu Farm

"That's not true, it's just that grandpa said that sister will be getting married in less than two years." Wang Luojing pouted, "It would be better to help brother improve his cultivation."

"Fourth brother, I gave it to my brother voluntarily. You, you must not blame him." Wang Luotong explained nervously and uneasily.

According to the clan rules, those who seize clan members' resources would be severely punished. However, if it was given voluntarily, there would be no punishment.

"Ugh!"

Wang Shouzhe sighed heavily in his heart. It seemed that the four elders were somewhat patriarchal, but this was basically common in the Wang clan these days. This was because the clan was poor.

Wang Shounuo was not like him. He was the young clan leader of the direct lineage, and his natural talent was well cultivated as he was first in line to receive the best resources. Wang Shounuo would have been allocated far inferior resources.

However, for a Xuanwu practitioner, the younger you are, the higher the cultivation reached, the better it is for you. Otherwise, it would be increasingly difficult to improve your cultivation as your body declined at an older age. The fourth old master probably had no choice but to persuade Wang Luotong to help Wang Shounuo.

"It's alright, it's all my fault to say the least." Wang Shouzhe sighed and said, "I'm taking up too many resources, invariably leaving my older brothers, younger brothers, older sisters, and younger sisters with a much smaller share."

"Fourth brother is from the direct lineage, naturally talented and the pillar of the family. You should be allocated more resources," Wang Luotong's eyes shined with admiration and hope.

"I heard from grandpa that fourth brother's talent is just a wee bit less than ancestor Longyan, and there is a strong likelihood that you will breakthrough to Lingtai realm in the future. As long as fourth brother becomes a Lingtai ancestor, our Wang clan's life will be better."

"Yes, yes! I also heard that fourth brother have been admitted to the Zifu Academy." Wang Luojing stared at him in excitement.

"If it wasn't for fifth uncle's incident and fourth brother had to be the clan patriarch, fourth brother, would you be preparing to leave for Zifu Academy now? I've heard there are many beautiful sisters in Zifu Academy, so if fourth brother goes there, you'll definitely be able to marry one and bring her home."

Zifu Academy!

For all the young ones in the entire Chang'ning area, Zifu Academy was their ideal sacred sanctuary, an unattainable dream which was out of reach for most, if not all of them.

"Don't spout nonsense, what's in your head, little yellow-haired girl?" Wang Shouzhe smiled at her and gave her a few pieces of candied fruit. "I haven't passed the final assessment and might be eliminated."

Between the jokes, however, Wang Shouzhe felt a heavy pressure. It was the pressure of the entire clan's hopes being pinned on him!

"Anyway, fourth brother is the strongest." Obviously, Wang Luojing blindly worshipped him.

"The prosperity of a family doesn't depend on one person." Wang Shouzhe looked at Wang Luojing with a smile, "You are also a member of the family, you also have to work hard.

"I see you are also gifted, you are already at the peak of the first level of the Qi Refining Realm at a young age. Work hard and you might be accepted into the Zifu Academy in the future and be as exceptional as Elder Longyan."

"Mm-hmm, Jing'er will definitely work hard." Wang Luojing's eyes were filled with hope, "At least, I can't let sister Luoqiu surpass me again."

Luoqiu?

"Is it Wang Luoqiu from San Bo's family?" Wang Shouzhe said curiously, "Could it be that she has reached the peak of the first level and is about to breakthrough?"

"She has already made the breakthrough." Wang Luojing pouted as she said somewhat unhappily, "She even came to show off some time ago."

"That's quite good talent." Wang Shouzhe said with surprise, "I think she is only 11 years old, right?" Her natural talent seemed to equal that of Wang Shouzhe.

It seemed that the younger generation of the Wang clan was not any worse than the Liu clan and the Zhao clan. It was just that the problem of resources caused everyone's slow growth. His brow furrowed as he continued to ponder.

Take Liu Yongzhou of the Liu clan, at the age of 23 or 24 at the high level of the Qi Refining Realm, he was considered to be relatively good among the younger generation.

If Wang Luotong was given more abundant cultivation resources, then her future achievements would not necessarily be worse than Liu Yongzhou's.

It was a pity she was a female, and the family was too poor.

Wang Shouzhe then intentionally or unintentionally quizzed them on their cultural studies, but found that they were just average in this area, and were particularly bad in arithmetic.

This caused Wang Shouzhe's face to darken and he directly reprimanded them, "You are too embarrassing, your pretty heads are empty cans. Although the Xuanwu family is founded on martial arts, the culture and knowledge base are also the foundation of a family's heritage."

"Four brother, we don't dare anymore, we don't dare anymore."

"When we get home, study hard! I will test you again in three months."

"Oh!"

The girls lowered their heads.

It was 20 miles from the Wang's main residence to Fenggu Farm. The road was a solid hard dirt road which could accommodate two horse-drawn carriages. Both sides of the road were planted with wheat, and the journey was very smooth.

It was the beginning of midsummer and the vegetation on both sides was lush and vibrant. Patches and patches of green wheat swayed in the breeze like a sea of blue waves. It is clearly a good omen for this season, when the wheat ears were filling up and the wind and sunshine were plentiful.

While Wang Shouzhe was chatting to his two younger sisters, they arrived at Fenggu Farm in less than an hour.

Most farms are located on more fertile land. This piece of land bordered the main stream of the Anjiang for seven or eight miles, and a small tributary about 10 feet wide meanders down and through the Fenggu farm. (Feng means rich, abundant, plentiful).

The ancestors cut off the tributaries and created several rivers three feet wide, making the waters look like a large "Feng" from the sky, and hence, the ancestors named the farm, "Fenggu Farm".

Rows and rows of houses were built along the water source in picturesque disorder. The houses were simple, but each had a small yard in front and behind, where fruits and vegetables could be planted, and chickens, reared. There were simple stone steps in the backyards which led to the river for washing and cooking.

In the large and small brooks, flocks of old ducks and geese were playing and hunting, while quacking away.

In front of the houses were well-kept wheat fields. The wheat was swaying in the wind, creating a magnificent and beautiful sight.

It was an idyllic scene.

Wang Shouzhe, who had lived in the city for a long time, was instantly mesmerized by this pleasant and leisurely scene. When he first transmigrated into the Xuanwu world, he thought the world was all about fighting and killing.

He had never imagined that there would be such a beautiful idyllic scene.

A family general went ahead of them to inform the farm's occupants of Wang Shouze's arrival but even then, the group had to wait for half an hour in front of the riverside before Wang Xiaozhi came out of the depths of the vast farmland.

He was already in his seventies and his skin was tanned, but he was still hale and hearty. After taking off his straw hat, he greeted Wang Shouzhe and said with a smile, "How come Shouzhe is free to visit today?"

"Fourth grandfather." Wang Shouzhe politely paid his respects.

"Grandpa." Wang Xiaozhi's two granddaughters, Wang Luotong and Wang Luojing, also paid their respects.

"What are you two girls doing here, instead of studying and cultivating at home?" The fourth old master, Wang Yaozhi, frowned slightly and rebuked them, "There are many snakes, insects and rats in the field. There's nothing fun here."

The girls turned pale when reprimanded, and they lowered their heads and did not dare to speak.

"Fourth grandfather." Wang Shouzhe piped up helpfully, "Fourth sister and fifth sister missed you, so I took the liberty of bringing them here to visit you without authorization. Please don't blame them."

"Shouzhe, don't spoil them lest when they get married in the future, they will feel aggrieved at every turn at their husband's house."

Wang Yaozhi's attitude towards Wang Shouzhe was more amiable, "You've come at a good time today. Yesterday, a herd of pigs came to the wheat field in the evening for a meal.  We hunted and killed the big one. The pork stew has been braising since morning. Let's go, fourth grandpa invites you to drink and eat meat."

"I woke up this morning and decided on a whim to visit the farm. I was lucky enough to smell something delicious from fourth grandpa's farm from far off." Wang Shouzhe said with a smile, "It seems I'm really quite blessed."

"You are the pillar of our family, of course, you are blessed." Wang Xiaozhi smiled and led Wang Shouzhe into the main courtyard of the farm, while the two girls followed behind.

The main courtyard of the farmhouse was a mixed brick and timber structure with a relatively simple and rustic shape. It was mainly for clan's members, generals and servants who stayed behind to carry out their duties. There were some farming tools in the corner of the courtyard and a few free-range chickens.

Wang Xiaozhi led Wang Shouzhe into the courtyard. There was a round shaped tabletop made from stone, surrounded by five or six stone stools. After a few peasant women served some fruits and tea, they returned to the kitchen to cook.

Wang Xiaozhi also sent his two granddaughters to help in the kitchen. His reasoning was girls should be familiar with the kitchen so that they would not be disadvantaged in their husband's families in the future.

Wang Shouzhe knew that this was the tradition in the Xuanwu world. Although Xuanwu families have cooks and assistant cooks, one's own cooking represents the person's love and care.

Just like Gongsun Hui, she often cooked some delicacies for Wang Dingyue and Wang Shouzhe, to symbolise their close relationship.

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 11

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 11

Chapter 11 – The hope of the entire clan

Although Wang Shouzhe came to the farm with a purpose, he was not in a hurry, and casually chatted with Wang Xiaozhi about some strange and unusual things.

When he mentioned that he and sixth uncle, Wang Dinghai, caught a 75kg red scaled eel together last night, Wang Xiaozhi slapped his thigh in excitement, "That little brat Dinghai may not be able to catch even one in two years, so this time, you must have brought him good fortune."

Although the red scaled eel was not as good as the red tail Linggan, it was still considered as a great tonic and was ranked amongst the spirit food.

Spirit food was good to quickly replenish a Xuanwu practitioner's qi and blood and was a necessity for every Xuanwu practitioner's survival. Even an old man like Wang Xiaozhi, whose cultivation had stagnated or even gradually regressed in his 70s, needs to consume some spirit food from time to time.

Otherwise, there would be a shortage of qi and blood, which would speed up the decay of the body and the dissipation of cultivation.

The younger generation, on the other hand, needed spiritual food to replenish their qi and blood, which would enable them to grow faster and better.

The two of them were talking and laughing, and within half an hour, the cook and the two sisters set out some farmhouse delicacies, fresh chicken, duck, fish and geese, as well as a big stone pot of red stewed pork.

"Shouzhe, you are a rare visitor, fourth grandpa has nothing else to treat you." After running into the bedroom, Wang Xiaozhi carried out an antique wine jug a moment later and said with a smile, "Try the good wine which I have treasured for a long time. Drink as much as you can and take it back with you if you can't finish it."

As they were talking…

A dark-skinned, mud-covered youth walked in and said in a hearty voice, "Grandpa, you're biased. This white jade spirit wine of yours, I usually begged for a sip, and you kept refusing! Yet, you brought out the entire jug for fourth younger brother who is here today."

"Little brat, how can you compare with Shouzhe?" When Wang Xiaozhi saw the young man, he laughed and scolded, "Your timing is really good, just in time for a meal. Go wash up. I'll keep a cup for you."

"Third older brother." Wang Shouzhe arched his hand in greetings with a smile. He knew this was Wang Shounuo, the third oldest in the "Shou" generation, the clan's seventh generation.

"Fourth younger brother." Wang Shounuo hurriedly returned the salute solemnly, then smiled, "I'll wash up first, and return to chat with you." With that, he quickly excused himself.

By the time the table was set with bowls, chopsticks and wine cups, Wang Shounuo had taken a quick shower and sat to the right (a seat of lower priority) of Wang Shouzhe.

He sniffed at the aromatic dishes and staring greedily at the pot of white jade spirit rice wine, smiling, "I've taken advantage of fourth brother today. We haven't had a meal together for a very long time. I'll toast you with a few more cups later."

"The third brother has worked hard for the family. I should be the one to esteem you with a few toasts," Wang Shouzhe smiled.

"Tong'er, why don't you quickly pour a cup of wine for your fourth brother?" Wang Xiaozhi was in an extremely good mood, his tanned face glowed as he casually ordered his granddaughter.

"Yes, grandpa." Wang Luotong picked up the wine jug and poured the wine for Wang Shouzhe, Wang Xiaozhi and then, Wang Shounuo.

The wine was pure white in colour and emitted a mellow refreshing aroma.

Just as the two girls, Wang Luotong and Wang Luojing, were about to go back to the kitchen for a meal, Wang Shouzhe said, "Fourth grandfather, I am not an outsider. Let fourth and fifth sisters sit down and eat together with us." (Translator: Good man!)

Wang Xiaozhi was taken aback but gave face to Wang Shouzhe. He smiled and said, "Since your fourth brother made this request, then, let's have a meal together."

"Thank you, grandpa, and fourth brother." Wang Luotong and Wang Luojing took the seats with the lowest priority.

Naturally, more mingling ensued.

The two girls, however, ate in good-natured silence, pouring a little wine for the men, every now and then.

"Good wine." After drinking just half a cup, Wang Shouzhe felt the wine burning within his belly, the qi and blood in his body surging, and his energy gradually flourishing.

The white jade spirit rice wine was brewed from white jade spirit rice and a number of precious medicinal herbs, and its effect in replenishing qi and benefiting blood was far better than that of mere spirit food.

It was just that its price was very "moving". Even Wang Shouzhe could only enjoy it once, as a pot of white jade spirit rice wine weighing several catties could easily cost several Qian gold.

Moreover, spirit wine could only be used as a supplementary spirit food, and one could occasionally take a drink. Otherwise, if you become addicted, it was not good to be drunk all day long.

During this time, Wang Luojing, who was eating in silence, glanced at the wine jug from time to time, pursing her lips as if she was craving for a sip.

"Luotong can drink half a cup. Luojing is too young and can only a little." Wang Shouzhe picked up the wine jug and poured some for each of his two sisters.

"Thank you, fourth brother." The two girls thanked him joyfully. They had obviously been drooling over the spirit wine for a long time too.

At the same time, Wang Xiaozhi's face twitched, as if he felt some flesh pain, and whispered, "Shouzhe, isn't it a waste to give this spirit wine to the two girls?"

Wang Shouzhe's eyes also twitched, this fourth old master were so obvious with his patriarchal thoughts.

"Fourth grandfather, our clan's children are all the same." Wang Shouzhe smiled.

"Not the same, not the same, a girl has to get married sooner or later." Wang Xiaozhi was still rambling heartily.

"Shouzhe, you are at the threshold of the seventh level of the Qi Refining Realm, you are the one who should drink more. Shounuo, you also drink less, leave more for Shouzhe."

Wang Shounuo hastily and awkwardly put down his cup and smiled foolishly twice.

In the eyes of a clan elder like Wang Yaozhi, Wang Shouzhe was the patriarch of the direct lineage, the hope and future pillar of the family. His position was way higher than his own grandson, Wang Shounuo, not to mention his two "money-losing" granddaughters.

Fortunately, his grandchildren were used to him, and the meal could be considered a pleasant one. However, under Wang Xiaozhi's "leadership", more than half a pot of the spirit wine was left. He planned to send the wine and most of the cleaned pig meat to Wang Shouzhe's courtyard for him to enjoy alone later.

Wang Xiaozhi's "bias" was so blatant that Wang Shouzhe was helpless and had to let him be for the time being.

After the meal, Wang Shouzhe brought up the reason for his visit, "Fourth grandfather, I came to Fenggu Farm because I want to study agronomy from you."

"Agronomy?" Wang Xiaozhi frowned, "Shouzhe, you are the head of a clan. The most important thing right now is to cultivate hard and advance to the Lingtai realm as soon as possible. Don't be distracted by agricultural studies and other chores. Fourth grandpa and your third brother will take care of it."

The purpose of Wang Shouzhe's visit was naturally to learn more about Fenggu Farm. If possible, he would also like to use modern thinking to enhance the effectiveness of the industry.

However, after dealing with Wang Xiaozhi for the first time, he found that while he was an old man who was loyal to his family, his thinking was hardened due to his old age.

He was not like sixth uncle, Wang Dinghai who listened to everything he said. If he suggests a couple of ideas casually, Wang Shouzhe was afraid that he would anger him.

At that moment, he changed the topic and said, "Fourth grandfather, you misunderstand, I am just the head of the family and I need to know a little bit about the family's industries. How about this? Can I trouble third brother to accompany me around and enjoy the idyllic scenery?"

"You, never mind, never mind. Just let Shounuo accompany you. It's the wheat's growth period and there are many chores in the field, so fourth grandpa will not accompany you." With that, Wang Xiaozhi took his farming tools and rushed off to the fields.

Hehe~

Although he was already the patriarch, the family elders still treated him like a child and expected him to use his talent to cultivate to the Lingtai realm.

This is like treating him as a mascot, right?

Actually, if he could live his life in peace and quiet, Wang Shouzhe would have liked to be a mascot and a rice worm. It was a pity that the Wang clan was not capable enough and the family's power has waned in just a few decades.

If things continue like this, it won't take long for the Ping'an Wang clan to be eaten up and wiped out, disappearing completely into history.

It was necessary to take advantage of the Wang clan's foundations, and quickly let the Wang clan rise, at least with the most basic self-protection ability.

"Fourth brother, I'll show you around, feel free to ask me if you don't understand anything." Wang Shounuo got up and arched his hand. He was very polite to Wang Shouzhe, and was even somewhat in awe of him.

For one thing, Wang Shouzhe was the patriarch from the direct lineage, and secondly, his personal strength was many times stronger than his.

"Thank you, Third Brother." Wang Shouzhe politely returned the salute.

"We'll go too." Wang Luotong and Wang Luojing followed in a frenzy. They were followed by the servant boy Wang Gui, who helped Wang Shouzhe with his sword, bow and arrows. Four heavily armed family generals followed behind them.

The siblings wandered around the farm. It was early summer and the day was getting slightly hot. The humid hot breeze blew on them, and the air was humid.

"Our Fenggu farm is an industry that the ancestor, Wang Zhouxuan himself developed 100 years ago." Wang Shounuo said somewhat proudly.

"In those days, our ancestors organised the opening up of the tributary rivers, dredging and filling, strengthening the riverbanks, and also building a water gate at the upper reaches of the Fenggu tributary, forming the prototype of the Fenggu farm.

"Subsequently, the clan continued to reclaim and maintain the wasteland, turning the half-dry, half-wet barren swamp into fertile farmland. Generations of the clan have worked diligently to create 3,567 mu of prime land and 200 tenant farmers!"

Wang Xiaozhi's "biasness" was so blatant that Wang Shouzhe was helpless and had to let him be for the time being.

It should be 'Bias' not 'Biasness'.

I kinda like that everyone in clan is simple minded. Although they did have the annoying aspect of being close minded, they at least don't fight within themselves. I had read too many cultivation novels that's everyone is scheming each other for resources.

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 12

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 12

Chapter 12 – Signs of pest infestation

Fenggu Farm alone has so many fertile fields, and 200 tenant farmers?

Wang Shouzhe looked at the fields crisscrossed by paths and ditches of varying sizes intersecting them. He was somewhat moved that this was the family's 100 years of legacy.

"Our farm adopts the traditional winter wheat and summer crop rotation. It is now the busy season when the winter wheat is about to ripen, and the summer grain seedlings are being cultivated."

Wang Shounuo was rather pleased, "The spring rainfall was abundant but there were no floods, and the sun was strong but not scorching. Both were very favourable to the growth of the winter wheat. We are looking at a bumper crop!"

At this point, even Wang Shouzhe was somewhat pleased. There was a big difference between a bumper crop and a poor harvest. A good harvest meant more development funds for the family.

"That's not correct, not true." Wang Luojing, the little stalker said, "Third brother, you're wrong. This year's winter wheat crop will probably fail."

Huh?

Wang Shounuo's smile stiffened, and he sternly said, "Luojing, you little girl, you can't spout nonsense. Even grandfather and some of the elderly and experienced tenant farmers have said that in all probability, it would be a bountiful harvest this year.

"You are just a kid, what do you know? If grandfather hears you cursing this year's harvest, I'm afraid he'll reprimand you again."

Wang Luojing immediately hid behind Wang Shouzhe after being frightened by her brother.

"Third brother, fifth sister is still young, children's words carry no harm. Why are you arguing with her?" Wang Shouzhe smiled and stroked her hair to soothe her.

"Fourth brother, you might not be aware." Wang Shounuo laughed bitterly, "You might not know that our fifth sister might be young, but she is very quirky.

"When she was just two or three years old, she could squat in the yard and watch ants for days. The other day, she even entreated me to help her catch some kind of grass or insect king.

"When I didn't go, she kicked up a fuss. I had to search all over the mountain over four to five days and was covered with mosquito bites before I caught two of them."

"It's the lacewing king, recorded in the Insect Classics." Wang Luojing poked half her head out from behind Wang Shouzhe and seriously corrected Wang Shounuo.

"Brother, this is too humiliating, your handsome brain is empty. Although the Xuanwu family is founded on martial arts, the cultural and intellectual heritage are also the foundation of a family's heritage."

The second half of her sentence imitated Wang Shouzhe's words of reproach against the two sisters earlier and was aimed at ridiculing Wang Shounuo.

Wang Shounuo's expression darken, and he could only say disgruntledly, "Yes, yes, yes, I'm ignorant. I'm not going to catch bugs for you the next time you beg me."

"I'll ask fourth brother to help me. Fourth brother is 10,000 times more powerful than you." Wang Luojing pulled Wang Shouzhe's lapel as if she had found a backer, full of confidence.

Wang Shouzhe smiled. It really seemed she was rather quirky but was restrained in front of him. Wang Shounuo was so angry he almost fainted.

"Okay, okay, Luojing, tell me, with such a favourable weather for the crops, why would you say that the harvest would fail?" Wang Shouzhe asked casually, "Don't be afraid, it's okay even if you're wrong."

With Wang Shouzhe's backing, Wang Luojing was emboldened, "Last year's winter was so warm that it only snowed a little."

Wang Shounuo immediately rolled his eyes, "Although it is said that a bountiful year is brought about by snow, it is only an expression. Does it mean that if doesn't snow this year, the harvest will be bad?"

"It's not the same." Wang Luojing said very seriously, "It was a warm winter last year, and the rain this spring was indeed abundant. But it has not rained for more than 10 days recently, and the weather is dry and hot."

"Luojing," Wang Shounuo replied nonchalantly. "We have opened the gates to release the water in the Fenggu tributary, so there will be no shortage of water for the winter wheat. And the abundant sunlight would help the wheat grains to grow very well."

"But it will also help the honey bugs to grow." Wang Luojing rolled her eyes.

Honey bugs?

Wang Shounuo shuddered, and said hesitantly, "Honey bugs are inevitable. They will appear every year, and it is normal for them to cause some reduction in production. What's more, last winter, we have also scattered pesticides around the farm."

But he lacked confidence when he said this. Honey bugs were the winter wheat's natural enemies. A small-scale outbreak was fine, at most, there would be a reduction in food production. However, if there was a large-scale outbreak, it would be a disaster!

According to the Wang clan records, the worst honey bug disaster took place 73 years ago. The disaster spread throughout Longzuo county and reduced the winter wheat production by 80%, causing the price of food to soar within a short period of time. The aristocratic families managed to survive only because they had food storage.

However, many free people with weak assets were thrown into a wretched state and sold their sons and daughters.

What was even more terrifying was that the plague extended into the third year, and by then, even some of the aristocratic families could not bear it any longer.

If it wasn't for Zifu Academy which brought a large amount of food to Longzuo county and refined a large amount of the ancient formula for exterminating insects, those in the county would have starved and the area, deserted.

Wang Shouzhe frowned momentarily, "Luojing, can you prove what you have just said?"

Fenggu Farm and Xingsheng Farm were the two major grain production bases of the Wang clan. If there was a large-scale aphid outbreak, things would get worse for the clan.

"Brother, try checking a few ears." Wang Luojing said with a grave expression.

Wang Shounuo was slightly perturbed by what his sister said. He walked towards the field and casually grabbed an ear and turned it over. To his horror, he saw a few green spots which have started to form on the ear.

He checked a couple of ears in quick succession, some had more while some had less, but there was no doubt that the wheat was infested with honey bugs.

Wang Shouzhe was at peak of the sixth level of the Qi Refinement realm and his physical fitness and eyesight were far beyond that of ordinary people. At a glance, he noticed that those green spots were all plump bugs. He was slightly stunned. These seemed to be aphids, right?

Wang Shouzhe was an ignoramus in farming, and he could barely guess that this was some kind of aphid. He was not interested in agriculture, and those apps with powerful algorithms would naturally not push this type of content to him.

"It is true that there are more honey bugs this year than last year." Wang Shounuo was doubtful and said, "But it doesn't mean it's a pest infestation, right? We can manage this with a bit of grass ash mixed with insecticide powder. At most, the yield will be slightly lower than last year."

"Brother!" Wang Luojing stamped her feet, "I have said there is a big problem with the climate, last year's insects left too many eggs in the soil. A large number of honey bugs will erupt from the soil either tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, or within three to four days' time. It is highly likely that a second wave will take place within seven or eight days."

"You guys, come here." Wang Shouzhe called a few tenant farmers who were working not far away, saying, "Pull out this little patch of wheat and turn the soil over."

"This…Yong Master Shounuo…" The tenant farmers shrank their heads and looked at Wang Shounuo suspiciously. They dared not and were somewhat reluctant to follow Wang Shouzhe's instructions. The wheat could be harvested within some 10 days and were shining white grains.

"Listen to the Patriarch." Wang Shounuo didn't dare to offend Wang Shouzhe, and he personally pulled out the wheat.

Several of the tenant farmers also carried their hoes and began to dig out the soil.

After a short while, the small patch of wheat was all pulled out and the soil was turned over.

"This…" Wang Shounuo carefully inspected the roots of the wheat that had been pulled out, and he was shocked, "How could this be possible, how could this be possible?"

There were many fine white spots on those roots, which was shocking. Most of the roots were infected with the white spots, it was just a matter of how many spots there were.

The overturned soil was also badly infected with many fine white spots.

Wang Shounuo's heart thumped, and a sense of foreboding rose, "Quick, go get grandfather."

"Quickly, inform grandfather, and tell all the tenant farmers to quickly soak the accumulated grass and wood ashes." Wang Shounuo had studied agronomy with his grandfather for two years and had more or less acquired some basic skills.

The tenant farmers got busy.

In a short while, the fourth old master, Wang Xiaozhi, joined them. He was extremely embarrassed, "How could this happen? How could there be so many honey bug eggs growing in the soil? After last year's autumn harvest, it was clearly the same as before. After ploughing the soil, pesticides were scattered. Could there a problem with the pesticides?"

"Grandfather, it was a warm winter last year...," Wang Luojing cautiously reminded him.

"Little girl, grandfather has been a farmer all his life, I know more than you!" As if his tail had been stepped on, Wang Xiaozhi angrily rebuked, "10 years ago, it was also a warm winter, the climate was exactly the same as this year, and as a result, Longzuo had a bumper crop and barns full of grains!

"In my opinion, the problem lies with the pesticide. Damn the Qian's trading company! They must be selling fake pesticides. I even took advantage of the low price to stock up a large amount!"

Within their words, Wang Shouzhe recalled some fragmented information, frowned, and said, "Qian trading houses are scattered all over Longzuo, and they have always been mindful of their reputation. They wouldn't be able to afford the consequences of selling fake pesticide and causing an infestation in Longzuo.

"Could it be that the aphids, no, honey bugs, have grown resistant to the pesticide?  These resistant bugs have survived and gradually and progressively developed a strong resistance to the pesticide?"

Although Wang Shouzhe was not involved in agriculture in his previous life, he knew that bacteria, viruses, and organisms were constantly evolving through genetic mutations. There was almost no pattern to this evolution, but most of them would be eliminated by nature.

It was reasonable to assume that some of the insecticide resistant honey bugs had survived and proliferated.

But Wang Xiaozhi was unable to understand the concept of biological evolution. He frowned and said, "Shouzhe, don't spout nonsense here. The pesticide was working fine, how come it didn't work this year?"

"Grandfather, I think what fourth brother said makes sense." Wang Luojing said, "Grandfather, you forgot that over these past few years, you have been complaining that the pesticides are gradually becoming less effective, and there are honey bugs every year."

Wang Xiaozhi's expression stiffen, and his expression became increasingly ugly. In recent years, especially since the bumper harvest 10 years ago, there has been a gradual increase in the number of honey bugs. However, as the overall situation was still within tolerable limits, the situation was nothing more than an annoyance.

Wang Shouzhe was almost certain that this was because the drug-resistant aphids have multiplied and spread. Last season's warm winter also allowed most of the eggs to survive while the climate this year was suitable for their growth. Hence, the current scenario.

This was a huge problem. Wang Shouzhe was numb. He doesn't have the ability to make a new "pesticide"…

When it rains, it pours! With this disaster, the Wang clan's days would be more difficult.

"Fourth brother." Wang Luojing pulled Wang Shouzhe aside as she whispered, "I have a solution to the honey bugs, but I'm afraid of Grandfather and don't dare to say anything!"

What?

Wang Shouzhe was stunned and looked at her incredulously.

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 13

Chapter 13: Talented! Spirit Insect Master!

"Fourth brother, you don't believe me?" Wang Luojing felt disappointed.

"Fourth brother, I suggest you listen to her." The older Wang Luotong also joined them, "Although Luojing is young, she has been very fond of playing with bugs since she was a child. She has a deep understanding of insects and can attract them."

"Interesting…" Wang Shouzhe suddenly regained his energy and his eyes sparkled with excitement, "Tell me, how would you solve the problem of the honey bugs? Don't be anxious, tell me slowly. We have plenty of time."

"In recent years, I've always heard grandfather complaining that there were many honey bugs and there weren't as much grains as in the previous years." Wang Luojing said, "So I thought that if I could resolve the honey bugs problem for grandfather, he would be very happy. I can then beg grandfather not to marry my sister off. I don't want my sister to leave…"

Wang Luotong turned pale instantly, she lowered her head and dared not speak. The decision on her marriage is out of her hands.

"If you can solve the honey bug infestation, fourth brother promises to protect you." Wang Shouzhe sincerely promised, "No one has to get married if they don't want to."

"Thank you, fourth brother." Wang Luojing said joyfully, "In fact, I have long read from the Insect Classics that the ancients used lacewings to control the honey bugs, but in recent years, the number of lacewings has progressively reduced.

"Last year, I raised some honey bugs and lacewings, and it really worked. So, this year, I commissioned my brother to go to the mountains to catch two lacewing kings. I took some time to tame them…"

"Hold on…" Wang Shouzhe's expression changed, "What is the "Insect Classics" and how were you able to tame the lacewing kings?"

"The Insect Classics are the Insect Classics, it's an ancient book I found in the family's library." Wang Luojing said innocently, "The classics talked about ways to domesticate insects. It's not very difficult. If fourth brother wants to learn, I can teach you."

Not very difficult?

Wang Shouzhe's expression darken slightly. He had fused with his predecessor's memories and has a good understanding of the Xuanwu world. There was a handful of people in this world who liked to produce or fight by controlling spirit insects, and they are usually called spirit insect masters.

However, spirit insect masters are rare and are exceptionally gifted/ talented. The requirements are higher than that of alchemists. The reason for this is also simple: a smart ordinary person could learn alchemy with much effort and difficulty. At most, they would consume a lot of money, and their achievements would be limited.

However, for a profession such as spirit insect masters, you would not be accepted as an apprentice by any of the spirit insect masters unless you have the unique gift of being able to communicate with spirit insects.

As a result, spirit insect masters were so rare that the children of ordinary families had never even heard of them. As far as Wang Shouzhe knew, only the Xu family in Changning and the Liu family in Shanyin had secretly trained two spirit insect masters.

If Wang Luojing has the unique gift of a spirit insect master…

For a moment, Wang Shouzhe's heart thumped with excitement.

"Fourth brother, what's wrong with you? Fourth brother?" Wang Luo Jing waved her hand in front of his eyes and pouted angrily, "You don't believe me either?"

"Believe, believe." Wang Shouzhe nodded vigorously, "Luojing is the smartest in the family, and fourth brother is very interested. Let's go slightly further away and you can demonstrate this to fourth brother."

"Mmmmmm, those two lacewing kings are in fourth brother's carriage." Wang Luojing was very pleased with her fourth brother's response, "My sister and I will go get them."

Wang Shouzhe immediately remembered that when he saw the sisters this morning, they were each carrying a large, oddly shaped box.

At that time, he thought they were carrying their belongings. It was not appropriate to ask about the girls' personal belongings, so they were simply told to place the boxes in the carriage.

It looked like the girls had plans to experiment in the farm.

"Let the family's generals go." Wang Shouzhe beckoned.

The family's generals who were waiting in the distance rushed over immediately and respectfully asked, "Patriarch, what are your orders?"

"Wang Wu, Wang Yong. Go to the carriage and bring Miss Luojing's two boxes."

"Yes, Patriarch."

The two generals dashed off; they were extremely fast. Within 15 minutes, they were back, carrying a box each.

"Wang Gui, Wang Wu, you guys go to the fourth elder and see if there's anything you can do to help." Wang Shouzhe dismissed all of them. Anyway, he saw that Wang Xiaozhi seemed to be thinking of ways to control the aphids by using plant ash and other methods. They would need help.

The family generals are all Xuanwu practitioners. They are much more efficient than the ordinary tenant farmers when put to use effectively.

Most importantly, Luojing's matter has yet to be confirmed and he didn't want to make it public knowledge.

After Wang Gui and the four other generals left, Wang Shouzhe personally carried the two large boxes, led Wang Luotong and Wang Luojing, and ran all the way to a remote wheat field.

The 3,000 mu (1 mu = 6.67 acres) or so land was like a vast ocean. There was no one around, so Luojing could demonstrate in this isolated place.

Wang Shouzhe turned over the wheat ears and sure enough, there were a few green aphids in this wheat field as well. The tiny bugs gave him the chills.

"Luojing, let me see what you can do."

"Hmm. The honey bugs infestation this time is earlier than expected." Wang Luojing's expression was somewhat grave and apprehensive as she carefully opened one of the boxes.

Wang Shouzhe glanced at the box curiously. He suddenly suffered from trypophobia and goosebumps because the box was full of leaves covered with a filament, with dense round dots hanging from them.

"Fourth brother and elder sister, help me out here." Wang Luojing took out a piece of "leaf", "Place a leaf in each zhang (3.34m)."

The corner of Wang Shouzhe's mouth twitched. This little girl was so bold that she dared to boss the patriarch around. But he obeyed Wang Luojing's instructions. As a cultivator, he just held a piece of "leaf" in a pincer grasp, flung the "leaf" casually and the "leaf" landed perfectly in place.

According to Wang Luojing's "instructions", 10 leaves were required for each mu of the wheat field. Presently, she has only opened one of the two boxes, and there were only a few hundred "leaves" which would cover only 10 mu of land. This was just a drop in the bucket considering that the farm covered thousands of mu.

After spending 15 minutes completing the task, Wang Shouzhe and Wang Luotong stood near Wang Luojing, and listened to her instructions to wait patiently.

"Four brother, these lacewing eggs are three days old." Wang Luojing explained, "They will hatch slightly slower in a dark box but will hatch faster once exposed to the sunlight."

Well ~ you are the technical expert in this area, we'll go with whatever you say.

Wang Shouzhe has always been honest about his lack of knowledge in certain areas and has never tried to be a know-it-all. In less than half an hour, the few leaves placed on the ground began to transform as small, odd-looking insects broke out of its shell with difficulty.

The leaves were right in front of them, and they could clearly observe the small insects, which were probably less than two millimetres in size, shaped like long striped beetles, but with two large pincers in front of their heads which made them looked very ugly.

They were motionless and just hung quietly on the filaments.

It took another 30 minutes before they finally began to move, sliding down the leaves in a silky fashion and slowly spreading out in all directions, as if they could naturally sense where there was food. They lazily made their way up the wheat.

Suddenly!

When one of them came across an aphid, it swooped down fiercely, struck the aphid with its pair of pincers, pierced its mouthparts into the aphid and began to suck. In 15 minutes, the poor aphid was sucked dry, and flew away with the wind.

The lacewing larva then continued to climb forward in search of its next prey.

"Awesome!" Wang Shouzhe exclaimed, "This little bug is really ferocious."

"Fourth brother, I did the calculations when I raised the lacewing larvae that it would pupate in just 10 days and it could eat nearly 1,000 honey bugs during that time. It is still relatively small when newly hatched and could only eat around 10 honey bugs for the first two days."

Wang Luojing had been playing with these kinds of insects, and she remained unperturbed at what would be considered strange happenings.

"If that's the case, the wheat fields will be less productive, but they will be saved." Wang Shouzhe sighed in admiration, but at the same time, he was worried, "But we have thousands of mu of wheat in our Fenggu farm alone."

"Don't worry, fourth brother, I was just experimenting." Wang Luojing opened the other box, which was no longer densely packed with lacewing larvae, but with small, brightly coloured beetles.

"Aren't these ..." Wang Shouzhe was surprised to see those rather familiar looking beetles, "the seven-spotted ladybugs?"

"Fourth brother, do you recognise them? But the Insect Classics said these are nine-spotted insects, not seven-spotted." Wang Luojing took out a fist-sized giant beetle with nine spots on its body and caressed it joyfully, "Let's call you the Nine-Star Insect King from now on."

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 14

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 14

Blessed Chinese New Year! I'm off to collect red packets during the 15-day CNY celebrations and translations will resume on Sunday, 20th February. Gong Xi, Gong Xi!

Chapter 14 – Biological legion!

Nine-Star Insect King!

The corners of Wang Shouzhe's mouth twitched a couple of times. Fifth sister never flaunted her talent, but in private, she was rather unnerving.

"Buzz!"

The fist-sized Nine-Star Insect King opened its carapace and its membranous wings fluttered rapidly in response to her.

At the same time, Wang Luojing pulled out a small emerald bamboo flute from her waist and brought it up to her lips to play. It was a unique rhythm with a sharp and high-pitched sound.

But the Nine-Star Insect King was very familiar with that sound. It vibrated its wings, and emitted a continuous buzzing sound. The rest of the smaller nine-star insects in the box spread their wings and flew out, surrounding their king like an unpredictable cloud.

Under Wang Luojing's command, the Nine-Star Insect King took the lead and headed towards the wheat field with a killing intent. A swarm of thousands of insects followed their king like a gust of wind. Although they were also ladybirds, the ladybirds of this Xuanwu world were obviously more ferocious.

They landed on one of the shrivelled wheat ears, caught an aphid and began to feast on it. Their fighting prowess was far beyond that of the lacewing larvae. In 15 minutes, each of the nine-star insect had killed at least five or six aphids.

Such a biological legion was truly invincible.

"Luojing, well done, well done." Wang Shouzhe was delighted and appreciative, "With a skill like yours, our Wang clan's food can be saved."

"Fourth brother, it's not enough." Wang Luojing shook her head and said, "It's only 10 days from the grain-filling stage to maturity. More delays means higher chances of lower yields."

Her grandfather, Wang Xiaozhi, has been a professional farmer all his life, and she was familiar with farming from childhood. Without saying a word, she pulled out two large, arm-thick, withered coloured worms from the lacewing worm box.

"Fourth brother, these two lacewing worm kings have produced too many eggs, and I'm afraid they won't live for another month." Wang Luojing said with some heartache and guilt, "Let's hope they will make one last effort for the family in their final hours."

With that, she played the emerald bamboo flute again, but this time, she played a very low sound which was completely different from the one she used to command the Nine-Star Insect King.

The two lacewing insect kings, whose colours were withered and grey, suddenly woke up, fluttered their wings, and flew off into the distance.

They were extremely fast and disappeared without a trace in just a few breaths. As they flew, their mouthparts were twitching and making low frequency sounds.

"Fourth brother, the lacewing king has the ability to gather partners." Wang Luojing said, "I hope they can return with more partners. There are increasingly fewer lacewings in the wild now. Only a few are left in the mountains."

Wang Shouzhe thought about this. The odds were that the pesticides introduced by the Zifu Academy not only brought about a reduction of aphids, but it also led to the decrease of the lacewing population.

Wang Shouzhe was concerned that a disaster might strike since there were many pesticide resistant aphids, but the lacewing population did not recover.

An hour later, one of the lacewing kings returned with a powerful army of lacewings which darted across the wheat fields, feeding frantically on the aphids. Even more frighteningly, they began to lay eggs on the leaves of the wheat ears as they consumed the aphids.

By the time it was dark, another lacewing king returned, bringing back more of its kind. The dense army of lacewing insects made Wang Shouzhe wonder if there were enough aphids in the thousands of mu of wheat fields for them to eat.

The large number of eggs laid would hatch in just a few days, and the small larvae should not be underestimated.

Such a spectacular scene gradually attracted the attention of the tenant farmers, who then reported it to Wang Xiaozhi. When he arrived later and realised that it was his granddaughter, Wang Luojing, who was controlling the spirit insects, he was so shocked that he was rendered speechless.

Then, he burst into tears and murmured, "This time we are saved, the Wang clan is saved."

"Fourth grandfather, our two other farms also have quite a lot of crop." Wang Shouzhe said, "I won't get involved in the details.  Fourth grandfather should discuss this with Luojing yourself." Although the sericulture farm mainly focused on silkworms and mulberry, the farm also grew a lot of wheat.

"This ..." When Wang Xiaozhi heard that he had to discuss the matter with his granddaughter, and the youngest of all granddaughters to boot, his face fell.

"Four grandfather, if you feel Luojing is superfluous, I can take her back so that she won't get in the way here," Wang Shouzhe said with a smile.

"Not superfluous, not in the way." Wang Xiaozhi hurriedly shook his head, his old face twisted for a moment, and he tried to ingratiate himself with Wang Luojing with a smile, "Luojing, we still have to find a way to save the other two farms. What do you need? Just let grandpa do it."

Wang Shouzhe smiled. Although Wang Yaozhi, the old man, was stubborn and patriarchal, but his loyalty and sense of belonging to the family was not a problem. If he could change the way he thinks, he could be a pillar for the Wang clan.

When he noted that Wang Xiaozhi has changed his attitude, Wang Shouzhe pulled him aside and said with a grave expression, "Fourth grandfather, it looks like the infestation is not limited to the Wang family.

"I don't dare to say that the entire Longzuo county would be affected, but I'm afraid that the overall production near Chang Ning'wei will be reduced by at least 40 to 50 percent."

"Isn't that a good thing?" the stunned Wang Xiaozhi smiled nervously and said, ""Other families have reduced production, and our family has a good harvest…"

"In this world, there are often no absolutes between good and bad things." Wang Shouzhe said in a cold voice, "Sometimes things that look good can often turn out to be bad."

Wang Yangzhi was aghast, then reacted, "Shouzhe, you mean the other clans will be jealous of us?"

"It would be fine if they were just jealous." Wang Shouzhe's expression was very solemn "As the saying goes, do not worry about scarcity, but rather about uneven distribution (from the Analects). Things would be fine if everyone is similarly affected by the disaster.

"But if our Wang family have a good harvest, let alone those hostile families, even those families with whom we have good relationships with will bear enmity and ill will. One wrong move and my Ping'an Wang clan may become the target of public criticism."

"What should we do? Now that my Wang clan is in a precarious situation, if we continue to…" Wang Xiaozhi was anxious. After all, he is the clan's farming elder, and has scant experience in other areas.

"Fourth grandfather, don't be anxious, sometimes bad things often turn out to be good again." Wang Shouzhe smiled confidently, "It depends on how we can work this out and turn the situation to our advantage.

"Let's take a look at the three clans – the Changning Xu, Shanyang Gongsun and Shanyin Liu clans have intermarriages with our Ping'an Wang clan for a long time. Our relationships are intimate, so naturally, we must find ways to assist them."

Among the three clans, Wang Shouzhe had the best impression of the Shanyang Gongsun clan, not only because his birth mother was from the Gongsun clan, but also because of the clan's more open and cheerful culture, which did not give the rather downtrodden Ping'an Wang clan, the cold-shoulder.

Of course, this was also due to marriages between the official lines, as the current head of the Gongsun clan, Gongsun Mo's grandmother, Wang Lingdie, is from the fourth generation of the Wang clan's official line.

The Changning Xu clan itself was a very strong Xuanwu family, no less so than the Ping'an Wang clan at its strongest. During that time, the two clans intermarried and were closely related to each other.

It was a pity that later…

Wang Xiaozhi's expression was complicated, and he nodded regretfully, "Yes, these three families are deeply connected to our Wang bloodline. It's just a pity that younger sister, Zhenmei ..."

Wang Shouzhe knew what he was talking about. At that time, after the dramatic changes in the Wang family, in order to consolidate the relationship with the Changning Xu family, ancestor Longyan got Aunt Zhenmei, the official daughter of the fifth generation of the Wang, married to Xu's eldest son.

Wang Zhenmei lived up to her mission. When she conceived her first child several years later, the relationship between the two families was the closest ever. It was a pity that Aunt Wang Zhenmei unexpectedly died in childbirth, resulting in the tragic end of mother and baby.

At that time, the Wang clan members were deeply grieved, and the males of the Xiao generation went to the Xu family in Changning and kicked up a big fuss. Even ancestor Longyan herself was so alarmed that she went personally to Changning to conduct an autopsy. They left only after they could not find anything suspicious or strange.

Since then, there has been a rift in the relationship, with intermarriages remaining in the direct line and no longer involved the official line.

Similarly, the relationship between the Shanyin Liu clan and the Wang clan was also somewhat convoluted and complicated to say the least.

But as complex as it is, the blood ties between them cannot be erased and they have to give each other a helping hand at critical moments.

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 15

PROTECT OUR PATRIARCH – CHAPTER 15

Chapter 15 – Precious! My treasured granddaughter!

"In addition, we also need to actively help the Yingxiu Lu clan, the Jinsha Xu clan, and the Donggang Chen clan." Wang Shouzhe said solemnly, "In the last 40 to 50 years, our Wang clan have intermarried with these clans, and have built a deep relationship with them."

These three families are not very powerful. But it was for this reason that they intermarried with the declining Ping'an Wang clan. Of these, the Wang clan was closest to the Yingxiu Lu family, and Wang Shouzhe's birth mother was from the Lu family's official line.

At the same time, the matriarch of the Yingxiu Lu clan, Wang Lulin, is also the eldest daughter of the Wang's sixth generation descendants and Wang Shouzhe's own aunt. The relationship is quite complex and intimate.

"That's right, these three families are very close to my Wang family. What do you have in mind, Shouzhe?" Wang Xiaozhi nodded his head in agreement.

He has two daughters, one married to the Shanyang Gongsun clan and the other to the Donggang Chen clan. His son, Wang Dingbang, who died in his prime, married a direct line descendant of the Jinsha Xu clan.

"Fourth grandfather needs to quickly identify the cause and dangers of this pestilence. I will despatch the family generals to notify these six clans this very night."

Wang Shouzhe quickly said, "Amongst them, the Shanyin Liu clan and the Changning Xu clan have trained spiritual insect masters. As long as we share the honeybugs eradication methods with them, I believe it will not be difficult for them to solve this crisis on their own.

"In addition, the Jinsha Xu clan and the Donggang Chen clan's main business should not be in agriculture. We can reduce their losses after we have fulfilled the obligation to notify them."

After a pause, Wang Shouzhe added, "The more troublesome ones are the Yingxiu Lu clan and the Shanyang Gongsun clan. Firstly, we must fulfil our duty to inform them as soon as possible. In addition, we need to actively rush to their aid and do our best. This way, even if they suffer huge losses in the pestilence, they will only be grateful to us and not resentful."

Wang Xiaozhi was flabbergasted by these calculations and remarks. He had never expected that the sudden outbreak of a pestilence would involve such a complex situation.

More importantly, in just a short time, Wang Shouzhe was able to arrange the matter in such a thoughtful and meticulous manner and took care of every aspect.

"Shouzhe, fourth grandfather underestimated you and also underestimated Luojing." Wang Xiaozhi sighed bitterly, "The young people of your generation are indeed better. We are old, we of the Xiao generation are really old."

"Fourth grandfather is too modest. If it weren't for your generation who held onto the ancestors' inheritance, how would there be a place for us, the descendants?" Wang Shouzhe humbled himself before sneering again, "Apart from those six families, especially the Liu and Zhao clans…"

Suddenly, Wang Xiaozhi became serious, "Shouzhe, don't worry, our three Wang family farms will completely block this news over the next 10 days."

Unexpectedly, Wang Shouzhe laughed, "There is no way to hide the outbreak of the pestilence. Every family have agricultural experts. In less than three days, the entire Changning'wei region will flare up. By the way, didn't you stock up a batch of insecticides at a low price, fourth grandfather?"

When the matter was mentioned, Wang Xiaozhi was vexed, "Yes, last year's winter insecticides was the lowest price ever, and there was additional discount for larger quantities. I thought the three major family farms would require insecticides. After discussing with a few elders, I stocked up a large amount of insecticides, enough to last our family for three years.

"There are some 300 Qian gold of goods left. This is a huge loss, huge loss! After this plague, what's the use of the insecticides?"

The family was already in such straitened circumstances that losing over 300 Qian gold in one go was enough to send Wang Xiaozhi to his grave with guilt.

"The insecticides should not have completely lost their effect yet, right?" Wang Shouzhe pondered, while his brain churned.

"That's not true. It's just that dealing with those adult honeybugs is more difficult than the eggs." Wang Xiaozhi's face was very grave, "I've just tried it, you have to double the dose mixed with grass ash juice to get rid of the honeybugs quickly, and that doesn't include the subsequent honeybugs which continue to hatch."

Then, Wang Shouzhe began to fire questions like a machine gun.

The overwhelmed Wang Xiaozhi didn't dare to underestimate Wang Shouzhe any more and patiently answered the questions one by one. He is now 75 years old and followed his father into farming at the age of 15.  It has been 60 years since then, and he is indeed very experienced.

"In that case, the production value of winter wheat is about 15 copper per mu in an ordinary year." Wang Shouzhe's mind raced through the figures, "After deducting taxes, commissions for tenant farmers, farm tools and seeds for cattle and insecticides, etc, and the amortisation of insecticides which is around 1 copper, leaves an overall gross profit of 8 copper per mu. If this pestilence is not properly controlled, the farm will enter a slight loss stage based on a 50% reduction in production. The higher the production, the higher the losses..."

"If we don't do anything, I'm afraid the production will be reduced by about 70%." Wang Xiaozhi's body shook, he understood what Wang Shouzhe meant, and made a judgment. "If you increase the investment of the insecticides by two large coppers when the outbreak starts, we can control the disaster to within 20% reduction in production compared to previous years."

"The Great Qian Kingdom is currently practicing a unified government grain reserve mechanism. Any aristocratic family or merchant house which dares to take advantage of a good year or a disaster year to speculate on grain prices commits a big crime."

Wang Shouzhe continued to sort out the various conditions, "Therefore, on the basis of a 70% reduction in production, every 10% of the reduction in production is a loss of 1 large copper and 50 jiao, and a reduction in production of 50% is worth 7 large coppers and 50 jiao. So, the question is, if there is no spiritual insect master to manage the honeybugs, is it worth to invest 2 coppers in insecticides?"

"It's worth it!" As soon as he heard Wang Shouzhe's analysis, Wang Xiaozhi immediately nodded rapidly, "I'll invest even if it's four large coppers." At the same time, his eyes lit up with excitement, "What you're saying, Shouzhe, is that our family's hoard of 300 Qian gold worth of pesticides is not a loss, it's also worth 600 Qian gold? Well, well, well, thanks to those guys who laughed at me for hoarding pesticides."

"It's worth at least 600 Qian gold. Our family has fifth sister Luojing, a junior spiritual insect master who specialises in treating honeybugs, so those pesticides are no longer needed. But compared to the entire Changning'wei region, spiritual insect masters are rare, and most of the family will have to rely on the insecticides to survive the disaster." Wang Shouzhe smiled indifferently, "Congratulations to fourth grandfather for making a fortune for the family."

"Hahahaha, great." Wang Xiaozhi laughed so hard that his face turned red, "My family's Luojing is really a treasure, worthy of being my Wang Xiaozhi's granddaughter."

The corners of Wang Shouzhe's mouth twitched. This fourth old master was really old and thick-skinned, earlier he had been so patriarchal and kept saying that his granddaughters are money losing goods. Yet, in the blink of an eye, Luojing became a treasure.

However, Luojing, the future spiritual insect master, is a real treasure. Even if the new iteration of insecticide continues to be effective in the future, she can save the family a couple of hundred Qian gold in expensive "pesticide fees" every year, and the money saved will be pure profit.

"But it's all thanks to Shouzhe's good fortune." Wang Xiaozhi was smiling from ear to ear, "The fourth master also understands your saying that sometimes bad things often turn out to be good. Shouzhe, you are a blessed man. After you become the patriarch, our Wang clan will definitely become better."

Although superstition is not acceptable, Wang Shouzhe still appreciates Wang Xiaozhi's superstitious words towards him.

With his forward thinking, it would be a waste to be a transmigrator if he didn't grasp some business opportunities in this pestilence. The price of food is strongly controlled by the Great Qian government and speculation is forbidden, but the government didn't forbid speculation on insecticides?

He gradually thought of a plan.
