Chapter 3 - I AM PEBBLE!

The pebble has spent its days thinking, and has come to a conclusion:

"I am not alone in this world. Having said that, there must be a method of communication or interaction with the world and other beings around me. I just have yet to discover that method."

The pebble realizes that there must be some method of sensing the world around it. So it tries to focus its thoughts on anything outside of itself, but realizes that it is very difficult to do so when it doesn't know what it is looking for. However, it pushes on, and slowly begins expanding its mental ability to allow for it to sense its external surface.

The pebble sees itself, and excitedly realizes that it is a round entity, with a hard and rough surface. It also realizes that physical properties exist, as this is its first exposure to the physical world.

It decides to push on and expand its senses further, slowly seeing more and more of its surroundings. It sees tall green things standing all around it, reaching up to ten times its height. It sees colorful shapes at the tops of thicker green things, which reach even higher. It sees soft grainy things below it that all merge into one giant mass from which the green things come out of.

Thirsting for more, it pushes and expands its senses even further, seeing other round beings like it, with hard and rough surfaces, in all different shapes and sizes. It assumes that they, like it, are looking to see and understand the world around them. It tries focusing its senses on one of them, hoping to be able to communicate with it, but to no avail.

As it continues to expand its senses, it sees something that shocks it to its tiny pebble core: a black thing, with little lines coming out of its sides and reaching to the dark grainy mass below, is moving!

After observing this entity for some time, it realizes that the little lines are what allow for the black thing to move, as they hold it up and push it around on the dark grainy mass. The pebble begins excitedly thinking that it must be able to obtain such lines which allow for it to move as well! It looks around for any hint of little lines which could help it move, but was sorely disappointed.

The pebble realizes that its worldview was too limited, as it had never imagined such a thing as movement before seeing it happen. It figures that in order to find its own little lines and be able to move, it probably needs to expand its senses further, since its own little lines are probably sitting and waiting for it, just outside its sensing range.

So the pebble continues to work on expanding its senses little by little, day by day, and sees many interesting and exciting things. It sees larger and more colorful beings moving around, with big lines holding them up from the ground and helping them move around. It sees some of these large beings bending down and taking from the green things that are all around with an opening toward the top of those beings.

It sees some beings moving around with only two lines holding them up, with another two lines closer to the top that seem to hold and move other things around. Sometimes they use the upper two lines to put stuff in the hole toward the top, just like the beings that move on four lines do with the green things all around.

One thing is different though about these two-lined beings. They move their upper opening and sounds come out - very complex sounds, that help them interact with each other. They seem to coordinate with each other through these sounds and through motions they make with their upper lines. This is completely different from the four-lined beings who each repeatedly makes the same sounds.

After spending many days observing these two-lines beings, the pebble starts to understand their words, and realizes that the lines that hold them up are called "legs" while the upper lines are called "arms." The pebble learns all about the earth, animals, and people from learning the language of the "humans" as it realized they are called.

The pebble notices how its thoughts have begun to take form in the language of the humans, and becomes more curious about them. It pays attention to what they do, and notices that some of the small humans, or "children," come to the "forest" to look for small shiny rocks or "gems" that were dropped by "adults."

One day, as the children are running around, playing and looking for gems or other unique items, one of them thinks he notices a sparkle and turns toward our very own pebble. He picks it up and shows it to his sister, asking if she thinks it is valuable. She takes it, looks at it, and tosses it aside, saying "no, it's just a pebble."

The pebble, which is at this point very excited, roars in its mind: "I. AM. PEBBLE!"
