Chapter 3 - 03. Psychos, monsters or zombies?

It was Sunday morning so Maria just slept to the mid of day lazily.

When she woke up she didn't hear many noises as the apartment was well insulated even tho it was in an old building. It seems previous owners hated noise so they insulated the apartment thoroughly. Just minor noises could be heard but even those were quite dampened so it was quite comfortable to sleep.

She stretched in her bed and really wanted to sleep longer but her stomach started rumbling so she stood up and went to the living room. It was completely dark inside and not even a bit of light form outside shone in, making it sure that no light came from inside out at the same time.

She didn't want to waste light so she opened the curtains and went straight to switch off the lights, not even looking out. The bit of sign she saw from the corner of her eyes meant nothing to her.

As she finished preparing food she got the idea to sit outside. She already bought a big balcony chair and table and planned to spend every day out there as long the weather was good. It was early fall so she knew that there will be less and less nice days.

But as soon she came out the sounds outside hit he with full heaviness. Gunshots, screams, screeching of cars, explosions...

She placed the prepared plate on the table and rushed towards the rail to looked down and what she saw froze her in space.

Just like on the news, people running after other people and tearing them into bits and pieces. Like horror movie coming alive, she saw a huge crowd of people running towards the screams. The growling of those psychos, monster or whatever zombies filled the air and made her hair raise into the sky.

''W...what is this?'' She remembered Jack and tried to call him but unfortunately, she didn't come through. She feared that she might get him in trouble if the sound leads to him so she stopped calling and rushed back inside the apartment.

Her windows had a double layer of glass and curtains as well. On were thick curtains that were stopping light coming in or out and the other layer was seethrough with many holes. She stood next to the window and saw hundreds, maybe even thousands of zombies running at an extremely fast pace towards the screaming sounds.

Suddenly a screaming sound reverberated through the stairway. She left the door open towards the hall and rushed out to slowly lock the metal doors toward stairways.

The growling of zombies reverberated trough stairways as they as it seems ended up two floors lower in the three apartments under herself. The sound of screaming could be heard for a while but then sounds of steps and growling went down towards outside as they heard noises again outside.

As she watched the zombies rushing out her building she shakingly looked at the thick metal door that leads towards the stairway. She took her house shoes off and on fingertips went towards the door and pressed her ear on it.

Suddenly the sound of growls could be heard again in the stairways making her almost jump back. She tiptoed back inside her apartment and as noiselessly as possible closed her doors. The food she prepared stood outside on the balcony, completely forgotten.

Even her hunger was forgotten. Trough the thick door she couldn't hear anything so she again went towards the windows and saw many people standing on top of their buildings and sneakily watched the crowed of incoming zombies passing the streets.

For a moment she wanted to greet them but then remembered all the food she already bought. But if they thought she was here and won't leave maybe they would know she had food and would try to raid her. So she again opened the door quietly and slowly went to wards the balcony.

Outside the sounds reverberated through the city making her dizzy. The sounds of explosions and firearms made her remember the war. As low as possible, she went to the end of the balcony and looked at them and just as she wanted to wave her hand to show her position she stopped herself.

What if they find her position better than there? Even if she had no food, her home was high above the ground and safe. She carefully looked down and saw them just looking at passing zombies. Then she went to another side of the building and looked down.

Even in small passageways, there was even a bigger amount of zombies running trough it following the noises. But she realized something as well. None of the zombies really stood on the sun, sneaking through the shadows of the high buildings and avoiding the direct sunlight.

In a moment she got an idea...
