Chapter 5 - The Phoenix Warrior arrives part 5

Rin knew that whenever her engagement was not used as a threat, it went to this particular prince, as further humiliation to both of them. In their civilization, any girl over 10 years old was engaged to someone, and if the girl came from a noble family, engagement negotiations between families were a common thing for newborn ladies.

Marriage in their societies was a serious issue and premarital sex of any kind could be punished in many ways, mostly for the females. It was very much like most of human history had been in her world and there were prostitutes and courtesans galore. Men had a lot more freedom to engage in sexual relationships before or even after marriage. Men could also marry an official wife and also have many concubines whose status depended on their maiden backgrounds.

Rin did not know who she was engaged to right now. It actually made no difference for her in reality. She was almost 20 years old now and considered an old spinster. It was clear that no one wanted to marry her because of her lack of a soul gem, no family wanted to risk having a new generation of children with her defect, not even the vilest of the perverted Lords. And most importantly, she was not the Rin shackled by those rules. She could stick to some rules as to not go recklesly looking for trouble but she wanted to remain as free as she could. She had been given a brand new life on a world filled with resources and where she could begin a new life. She had even been given the great gift of a soul gem on esteroids with which she could find herself a path to a plentyful, rich and happy life. Compared to her life from before in Mariner Town, surrounded by the red wastelands of Mars where the air you breathed was a luxury that had to be paid with sweat and tears, this world where you could breathe a clean, crisp air free of charge felt like rolling in mountains of money.

The Prince case was slightly less clear to the public but Rin Coesen was part of a noble family deeply embroiled in political scheemes and despite being almost a recluse, she kept an open ear on the comings and goings at court because her life could well depend on it.

Prince Lyn Hekili was the second son of the Emperors of the Meric Empire. His older brother had been the Crown Prince but died during the last great plague from 12 years ago. He was barely 10 years old back then and the most powerful and cunning Imperial Consort decided to take advantage of the situation and frame Prince Lyn so her own child became the favourite son, the one that would eventually inherit the throne. Something extremely shady happened and were it not for the Empress intervening, the little Prince would have died. Things ended with the Prince exiled to this little nation, the Empress falling out with the Emperor and that Imperial Consort and her family gaining great power, so much that she could still try to ruin and get rid of Prince Lyn.

With how restrictive their society was, if Prince Lyn had been found having sex with this country Crown Prince, it would have been a scandal so great that both could have ended up executed. Rin thought it was a horrid thing to punish people for stuff that was so personal and private and even more so to incite rape and underhanded murder just to get away with more power. As a soldier, she had killed thousands of infected former humans, an ocean of blood lay at her feet but she slept well at night because that had been done to mindless monsters capable of eating even their young.

Rin watched over the Prince closely. She torn a piece of her inner robe to use as a rag and melted some snow, barely enough to wet the cloth and cleaned him before covering him up and since there was only one blanket, she snuggled up to him. They needed to keep warm to survive the night and he was much more properly clothed for the cold weather than she was. Since he was tied up, it was safe to be on close contact with him. The drug acted up twice more during the long night and Rin kept taking care to make him release as much as possible. He did not wake up fully and by the third time, Rin was sure that his body would not have been able to survive the ordeal without help. She had seen once the effects a sex drug overdose left on a young girl who had been rescued but could not be treated and she had simply gone catatonic. It would be a tragedy that the same happened to the Prince who, despite everything, was still the rightful heir to a great throne and also had a good reputation as an upright person and a good warrior. He was friends with this nation Crown Prince who might really be the only honest person in the entire Imperial family in generations.

Rin slept little that night but she still woke up before he did. After checking his vital signs and finding he was just recovering from the intoxication, she decided to untie him and distance herself from him. As the first light of dawn, she opened a small hole on the snow to peek out and wait until he woke up.
