Chapter 15 - To Lean On That Back

Nathan stood on the arena, looking up to the red mist. His eyes held fascination and attachment to the glittering light. He looked detached as if what was happening around him was none of his concern, until one of the contestants bumped into him. Awakening hem from his stupor, looking around he could get the gist of the happenings, yet he didn't seem to feel fear. Instead you could say, he felt... excited... in fact, too excited.

Looking towards the half giant in the middle, he started drooling. He never thought he'd meet an actual demon, even if it was a lesser one, in a place like this. His hands were itching to catch it.

It seems that even the demon felt the cold air against his skin. For he surveyed the whole arena again trying to figure who was the insolent one that would look so blatantly at him. Yet a shiver ran down his spine when he met those eyes, he felt like a fish on the cutting board. He felt scared, and his instincts roared inside his head to run. He almost acted upon those instincts, but then... he remembered. HE was supposed to be the hunter, not the other way around. He felt shame and anger for wanting to flee. Then he glared at the one who made him feel that way. He didn't notice anything but those eyes earlier, but when he checked again, he found a cute child that couldn't be more than 10 yrs old standing there.

Was that for real? When had his instincts gone rusty?. A child like this, it was a mistake to be here in the first place. Yet that fact only served to increase his shame. He decided to start with this child first. His ego couldn't handle this blow if he didn't let loose.

He pointed his finger at Nathan, and said :" I've made my mind. You'll the first to go down the yellow river."

After aying this, the red mist started condensing into multiple small spherical nucli. With a swooch sound, at least half of them attacked Nathan. "take a taste of my Drizzle, at least even your mom won't get to know you by then. Hahaha.", while laughing savagely, the drizzle of blood attacked where Nathan was standing. Dust rose into the air, while the arena was now dotted with many small holes. The audience took in a sharp cold breath at the spectacle. It should be mentioned that the floor of the arena was made from the most powerful granite stone. It was baked in The Eternal Fire for 7 days. Theoretically it should be impenetrable. But now, before their eyes, it looked like a honey comb. The poor contestants that were standing in the way, disintegrated into fine red mist by now. Everyone was sure that the poor child would be the same.

Right now, poor Nathan was facing an existential crisis. He was wondering, should he or should he not appear unscathed. If you look closely, in the half meter surrounding Nathan, the floor was still the same. His clothes didn't have a spec of dust in it. He looked.... strangely clean.

Nathan was a peculiar child, he had an amazing talent in magic. It was at leat four times better than the fourth prince, the current genius of the Empire. But due to various reasons he didn't want extra attention. Yet he just couldn't let go of a class SS existence, his ethics as a researcher would strangle his heart if he did.

He then reached a conclusion of winning, but not by much. He didn't want his only friend to hate him. He still wanted to have the right to stay by his side. Although, that little devil may he noticed his inconsistencies sometimes, he never delved into them. That's why leaning on that back was a very comforting experience he was not ready to lose.

Using his own magic to ruffle his clothes, then using ice arrows to make him self look disheveled and weak. He pinched his checks to make them look red. And melt the ice arrows to look like sweat. The confident Nathan that was standing there just now was gone, and a weak looking performing instead.

The dust slowly settled, a heaving Nathan could be seen, kneeling down and sweating like crazy. His face was flushed, yet his eyes looked determined. That picture made every one's blood boil, they soon started cheering.

They now had hope. Although he looked disheveled, he still resisted the attack successfully.

Nathan tried to stand up, only to stumble and almost fall, but he stilled him self and tried his best to remain standing. The demon was still in shock. How could this be. Even he didnt have a way to completely block the attack without being pushed back.

Yes, well,.. um.... little Nathan seemed to forget a small detail. He was still standing were he was.
