Chapter 92 - Creatures from the Depths of Darkness

The four red dots became six then eight and then more and more appeared. To be honest, I'm not really a fan of horror in any genre, so this caused my heart to thump so hard I thought it would leap out of my chest.

I heard a scream and instinctively swung my head towards the direction of the noise.

"Shit!" Another voice boomed from the darkness.

{"Master, what do you think we should do? We can't see anything through this darkness as well."}

Hmm…

If the darkness affects our eye sight, does it affect mechanical eyes?

I wondered if the drones would be affected by the darkness? I tested it by bringing out one of my drones and activated it's scan. The images appeared in front of me but it was black. I could tell the drone was scanning it's surrounding by the small flicker of light that is emitted from the tip of the nose on the UAV. There's nothing…

I pinched the bridge of my nose in frustration. As there nothing but darkness, I felt the feeling of claustrophobia slowly creeping back up. It was disorienting and unnerving.

Think Ryan think.

{Try using the drone's innate functions, my love.}

Innate functions? You don't mean…

{I do.}

My eyes widened.

How do I use the innate functions?

{It's all voice commanded. Try saying, 'view all functions' and let my beautiful system go from there.}

"View all functions."

A list of all the functions that the drones could do besides scouting and allowing me to use my skills through them via proxy, displayed in front of me.

[Drones's Functions]

Scan

Infrared

Sonar

Echolocation

Radar

Vibration Detection

Audio Transmission

Video Transmission

Noise Canceling

Silent Takedown

I was adequately surprised at the list. It had more than what I had initially thought. Sonar, echolocation and Radar? I know sonar is used to locate things underwater and radar is used to locate things above ground. Echolocation however, is a biological locator. All three does the same thing but in different types of situations.

I've just tried scan but I wondered if infrared would work? Infrared detects heat signatures which would be helpful.

I turned on the infrared and hoped it works.

As soon as I activated the infrared, the same screen that appeared when I activated the scan earlier appeared but with an overlay. The image was pure black but now started to show some outlines of shapes that was filled in with shades of red, yellow and blues.

I turned my gaze to the drone but tilted my head as the colours still stayed the same. Wait, infrared is colourless? Ha… the more you know. I know some facts about wavelengths and the spectrum of light and one fact was that light was colourless from the human eyes. We humans aren't evolved enough to see the light in it's spectrum like animals can.

I returned my gaze back to the image in front of me and saw the heat signatures of all the members in my team. All of them had managed to find each other and were huddled together.

I slowly made my way to them.

As I approached them, I heard Namise voice.

"Ryan! Is that you?"

"Yes."

"Oh thank god…"

"Did you see those red dots?" Asked someone that sounded like the spell caster.

"Yes."

Beep, beep.

The noise came from my screen and when I looked at the image, some interesting figures appeared but it wasn't filled with a 'heat signature' like us. I could see the outline of some sort of being but the inside was filled with the same colour as the space on the outside. Black.

What the…

"Lucifer, what are those things?"

{"I have no clue… honey, do you know what they are?"}

{"I too never been here before but when I was little, back when my father first created this place, I overheard my father talking to someone about some abnormalities that spawned within a place he created. He didn't know how they came to be but if the abnormalities are these guys, I think he called them Fear Mongers."} Lilith explained.

"Fear Mongers?"

{"It's what I heard him called them but I could be misremembering it since I was only a little girl."}

On my screen, the creatures started to move.

"Guys! Get ready for engagement!" I shouted.

"What?" They said in unison but in a hush tone.

"We got company!"

"Where?!" All of them said but not in sync this time around.

"The red dots! Those are probably the eyes of the enemies we're about to fight!"

The members of the High Flyers heat signatures shown on my screen moved frantically as they readied themselves.

The black figures moved ever so slowly towards us.

I had the advantage of seeing both the red dots with my normal sight and their outlines on the screen in front of me.

As if the creatures could read my thoughts, the red dots disappeared.

Though the red dots disappeared, I could still see them and ironically, since everything was shrouded in darkness to begin with, the red dots which I assumed were it's eyes, would've been it's mistake and weakness. In which brought up a problem, these creatures were intelligent.

"Be on your guard!" I shouted through the darkness to my teammates. "The creatures are right in front of us!"

"How do you know that?!" The spell caster shouted back.

I raised my eyebrows as I watched the screen. Even though the spell caster questioned me, with infrared, I could see him tensed up as the heat, subsequently the redness on my screen, that emitted from him, brightened.

Everyone else had stayed about the same. Bright red for the most part. The spell caster had some blue parts at the beginning but changed when I called out the request.

"I know it because I can sense them. I don't know what they are but I could tell they are right in front of us."

"Okay?" He inquired but before I could even try to decipher if he was either questioning me again or if he meant it as being sarcastic, he did something unexpected.

On my screen, with infrared, I could see a white light surrounding the spell casters hand. The light swirled in a circle until it turned into a sphere and then with a flick of his wrist, he flung the white orb forward. The white orb blared over to the creatures, I frowned as I couldn't see the orb through the darkness but on the screen, the orb exploded into tiny little sparkles that rained down onto the creatures.

The sparkles flared up on impact and then it began to pulsate.

"Over there!" The spell caster cried out and I switched my focus from the screen to the darkness and Lo and behold, through the endless of black, a faint light appeared.

As the light peeled away the darkness, the creature became visible. The red dots appeared once again and then a loud squeal erupted.

The sound was deafening as I tried as hard as I could to clamp down onto my ears.

It didn't work and I started to feel a massive headache coming along and wondered if my ears were bleeding out.

After the terrible ordeal, I lended a helping hand in hopes to recover whatever hearing was lost.

After the creatures had finished their wailing, I've sent a drone in to hopefully taking a better look at the creatures.

I wasn't disappointed, the creatures weren't anything I've seen before.

If a plastic bag could possibly capture the dead of the night sky, then that was what I'm staring at right in front of me.

"So what are we going to do to fight these things?" Pyrus called out.

From my screen, I could tell that all of them were on the edge. It's times like these, a team needs a shot caller.

"I'll boost all of you," I called out. "Those of you who have long ranged abilities, used them, those who don't? Focus on defence!"

They all listened to me.

I boosted them several times with helping hands as some of them prepared their attacks.

The spell caster did a chant that lit up the ground underneath the creatures. This allowed everyone to see the creatures once again when his last ability faded out. The light must've also stunned them as they weren't moving.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

Three shots were fired once the targets were visible.

The shots pierced them but once the shots exited out of the other side, the hole closed right back up like nothing had happened.

The creatures wailed again but louder this time around. I shut my eyes and covered my ears but this wail was now entering my heart.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

My heartbeat pounded in my chest, reacting to the wail.

All the members of the High Flyers fell down, clutching their hearts and withering under the excruciating sound. The spell caster's spell broke and the creatures faded back into the darkness.

As I stared into the darkness and the eerie looking red dots, it dawned on me. They are like the poltergeist from Harry Potter, like Peeves or Filtch. They are the manifestation of fear. They aren't dementors because they were created through experiments by an evil wizard and I don't think the demon lord is evil…

As I thought about it more, I don't think we can defeat them. I think they are invulnerable. Also the wail must've been their defensive manoeuvre.

Shit! What do we do?

If we can't beat them, how do we even win?

"Aghrrrrr!" The wailing continued and all I could feel now was numbness and the sense that I wanted to close my eyes.

On my screen, I could see the temperature of everyone dropping as the colour changed from red to yellow.

Oh no… if it reaches blue, we're doomed.

I tried to cast helping hands with only my shear will power and felt my heart and mind wanting to explode.

"Fa al la la la!"

A soft beautiful singing voice drowned out the wail, soothed my ears, my mind and my heart.

Thump. Thump. Ba dump. ba dump.

The song filled voice of harmony and melody floated all around me, relieving the numbness from my body.

{"I'm here master. I've just finished healing Sir Burch and Sir Murker. Sorry for not aiding you sooner."} Amilie said in her sing song voice.

"Well thank you my angel," I replied, which caused her face to turn red but before it could get any redder, she quickly dipped her head in gratitude.
