As soon as the ship broke into movement, I immediately started regretting my decision. Right now I was laying all curled up on the floor behind some barrels of wine. I felt ridiculous. My decision to set out on the sea without any idea what to do scared me. And how would I possibly save Elizabeth? I would just be in the way. Or get myself killed. Maybe both. Maybe I should have waited for them to bring her back instead. I raised my hands to my head and closed my eyes. For god's sake, what should I do? I mean, I can't exactly just waltz up to the deck. I visualised how the scene would play out. Not only was I overthinking, but I was slowly got nauseous as well. Was this how it felt like to be seasick? After all these years, dreaming and imagining myself on a ship, sailing to the end of this world, I never imagined getting seasick. This was going to be the longest day of my life.
The first 5 minutes at sea was pretty quiet. But after a while, the men on deck started yelling. The air was charged with shouting and the sound of footsteps above my head filled my ears. What the bloody hell was happening up there?
"Bring her around! Bring her around!" I heard someone yell. Bring who around? More noise. Suddenly, we stopped.
"Check every cabin, every hull down to the hill," someone said. I barely heard it and had to concentrate to hear the words. My heart stopped and I held my breath. How did they know I was here? I shoved myself even more toward the wall. What should I do if they found me? I still held my breath. I suddenly realized it had gotten quieter. I could still hear noises if I held my breath and concentrated, but they were further away. Like they had gotten off the ship. I got confused. Were they looking for me? Or someone else?
After a moment, we started moving again. I was still laying on the ground, confused with what just happened. Why and where had we stopped? And who were they looking for? I felt the engines in my head going around and around. I hadn't realized how quiet it had gone. It was too quiet. I could hear someone in on deck, but it was different. Only a few minutes ago there were yelling and stomping on deck.
Gunshots.
What the bloody hell was happening up there? We hadn't even been sailing for 10 minutes, and there was already a gunfight up there.
After I had been hiding for another 10 minutes, I realised how I could only hear two voices. I couldn't hear what they said, but I could only sort out those two. Had the crew abandoned the ship? Had most of them changed their mind? What if they didn't want to save Elizabeth? No, Norrington wouldn't give up on his bride, I thought.
"My father was not a pirate!" I squinted my eyes. Had I heard right? Pirate? Why were they talking about pirates? Who's father wasn't a pirate? I had never in my entire life been more confused than I had been this day. All of the sudden, a loud noise appeared. It sounded like the yardarm of the ship had been moved.
"-nd of a pirate, or can you not?"
"Tortuga?"
I let myself breathe again. Tortuga? I've heard about that place. After what I've heard, it's filled with pirates. Why would the interceptor sail right into the pirate territory? And how could this help Elizabeth?
The hard part of staying hidden wasn't actually the hiding part. The most challenging part was not dying of boredom. But, I had done some thinking while I had been hiding down here, and I managed to connect some red threads that had been bothering me. I was no longer hiding in the corner behind the barrels. Right now I was pacing around in the captain's cabin, desperate to both find some entertainment and some water. It had been a few hours since I had eaten or drunken anything, and I started to feel lightheaded. I knew that if I walked out now, revealing myself as a blind passenger, they wouldn't sail back to drop me of. But I was still petrified. I, after all, snuck onboard illegally. I had broken the law. Pluss I was official a runaway. I dumped myself down on the desk in the middle of the room. I couldn't wait much longer. I let out a sight.
"Go find something to drink" the fist man ordered.
"Do it yourself" the other backfired. One of them laughed. I realised the first man's voice sounded familiar, but I couldn't quite set my finger on it.
"Actually, William dear, you sail under my command, remember?"
"If I find any, I'm at least not telling you" I giggled. I found myself liking the second man better. He sounded nice, in contrast to the first man. Before I could react, someone opened the door to the cabin, and there I was standing in the middle of the room. My eyes widened, and I felt like I was going to throw up, and I didn't know it was because of the fact that I had just been got caught, that I was seasick or that I was starving. The person on the other side of the room was a man. A man I recognized right away. He stood there with wide-open mouth.
"Found something?" the first person yelled. Will stood in front of me, speechless and unknowing of what to do.
"Felice?"
Shit.
