Chapter 40 - Back in the camp

A few days have passed without fighting or worrying. All four of us have survived living in that cramped bunker and we will come back to the camp we are assigned on. We took our things from there and we moved into our new tents because our old ones were taken while we were sent in that bunker to guard that part of the forest. Our new tents are positioned at the building where are the pigeons stored because they are the only things that can help our army maintain communication with our kingdom and even on the battlefronts.

The carts pulled by donkeys transported us to our camp, and there, I and the other three go to our General to give him the report and apologize for what we did, which is actually more my fault because I threw that huge boulder out of that stick, but still, at least I had an interesting week in that bunker. I saved a village from the attack of cannibals, who were able to kill some of them, I fought enemies and other cannibals on a battlefield, I defended the cannibal bunker, I fished with Uncle Gus, I noticed the final shape of Fewa's Vewolf, I found out who those two people in the dreams I've had lately, I found new spells, I tasted Fiona's food, I learned to cook, the difference between a normal sword and Fiona's sword and new spells from Aunt Emily's book. A good week to spend with family relatives and the gentleman you work for.

We entered that tent where our Generals and a few disciplined men are there and preparing the next attack or they are talking about anything important. When we entered, all the soldiers there were looking very attentive to us as if we were the last slice of juicy meat at a table with five obese people who barely managed to eat fifteen slices of that kind of meat. The general puts that piece of paper that comes out of the smoke in a dirty plate, looks at us like a General, and then asks us as if we were criminals caught by the police and asked why we committed this crime.

"Did you learned your lesson?"

"Yes, General!" all four of us say to the General which looks at us quite happy.

"I heard you four have done a good job in that bunker... You had saved a village, have destroyed a few of the enemy army and you also destroyed the last survivor of the last cannibal tribe from our region. Good job, you four! For this, you will get a salary raise after the war ends."

"Salary raise?!" I thought to myself. "Are we going to get much more money than I first thought? If so, then I started to like the idea of the wars."

"But you." says the General looking at me. "Because you had launched that giant rock that day and the enemy discovered our positions, you will not get the salary raise."

"Why?" says Big Gus looking quite angry at the General.

"But, if he wanted the salary raise, he has to earn it by participating in that mission." says the General stopping Big Gus to yell. "If he can complete the mission, I will be thinking again about that salary raise."

After that, the General looks at me and asked me.

"So, what do you say?"

"I... Accept the conditions." I say to the General making my three teammates feeling quite unexpected by that response. "But with one condition, I wanted two of my teammates to help me in that mission."

Those three comrades of mine were feeling quite unexpected by my behaviour because I am still a kid but in this world, a kid at ten years can be considered even a young adult. Even I feel quite surprised by my behaviour because I don't even need that raise, but I heard from the other people in the village where I and Big Gus were going to practice the fishing, that the King has started to raise the taxes with one or two per cent. I don't know how to calculate but it is probably a lot more than the previous amounts of gold it needed to pay those taxes to live in this Kingdom.

The General feel intrigued by my ambitions and asked me which people could help me in this mission, and I responded to him, I needed Fiona and Big Gus because those two are the most powerful people I know and they could help me destroy the enemies approaching me. But, the Big Gus cannot help me in this fight because the General has told me something all three of us did not expect.

"Big Gus got an important mission from our King to go to the capital and recruit the new soldiers. He will come back after a few weeks, so the only person you could take is Emily since she is the only knight available right now. Almost all of the soldiers here got different missions."

"I'm sorry, little boy and girls." says the Big Gus feeling bad he didn't tell them about the new mission he got from the King.

"Don't worry," says Fiona to him. "I could handle a few of them and I will probably take some prisoners for you."

"Really? Thank you! You are a fine lady-warrior." says the Big Gus feeling quite happy and then he shut up because the General was looking at him.

"Well," I looked at Emily and asked her. "What do you say?"

"Sure I can help you," says Emily who was looking at me. "What are families for."

"Ah. So you are blood-related to him..." says the General feeling intrigued about this fact. "A nice family battle. This sounds quite nice."

The other people there started to whispers to each other and the General ignored them because he was looking at me and then said before we were about to leave the tent.

"Tonight. You, Fiona, and Emily will have to be present to talk about the strategy we have to do at the battlefield. Because the next night, you three will have to go and attack the enemy camp. Understand?"

"Sir. Yes, sir!" we four of us aid our General while we salute him in military-style.

After the salute, and my comrades left the tent and we were heading to our tents to put our baggage. It looks like me and Fiona we have to share the same tent, which will probably be weird because when I was living in the Orphanage it was forbidden to a boy and a girl to sleep together in the same room because there could consequence like making a girl and a man pregnant with monsters.

I put my things, I made my bed and I left my tent. When I left my tent I had observed a familiar face coming to me, it was Ron, who looks quite injured on his face because of some bandages and some cut clothes.

"Judah. Long time no see, am I right?" asked Ron looking at me.

"Ron. How are you doing?" I say to Ron while we both shake our hands.

"Good if I can say. We got attacked but we succeed to defend our position while we were attacked by warriors, archers, and even wizards who summoned some monsters. How about you?"

"Nothing much, just some fights between the cannibals and the enemy warriors," I told to Ron while feeling bad for the things he has gone through. "Also, why are you wearing bandages? You know there are wizards here, right?"

"Yeah. But those scars cannot be healed because the swords and the arrows were covered in anti-healing liquid which means my injuries can only be healed naturally."

"Ouch..."

Both of us stood in complete silence and then, I have decided to break this silence.

"How is Marcus?"

"To be honest. Not good," says Ron. "He has been shot by so many arrows, that the Generals have decided to send him back to his home and I have to stay here because the knight cannot fight and go into mission while he is completely injured and his squire becomes the property of the Kingdom of Romania Army. Bullshit rule to be honest."

"Yeah... So you have to fight here until he will heal completely?"

"Exactly."

"That's rough, buddy," I say to Ron feeling bad for him because this rule really needs to be changed because of some reason.

A few minutes later, I and Ron started to walk around the camp and talk with each other while we were walking and looking at strange soldiers who were doing their kinds of stuff like drinking the yellow drinks, playing cards, or cleaning their weapons. I even saw one old soldier who was repairing a few swords, spears, and daggers using a piece of equipment that just Diana would know about how it works. Ron had decided to stop at that old man because he needs his help to repair his sword. Ron showed me that the sword he was using was about to tear down and that's because the enemy he was fighting were some golems and those things are pretty strong at defensive because they are completely made out of the rocks.

When Ron has gone to that man to send his weapon to be repaired, Emily came from somewhere I wasn't noticed and asked me if I can go somewhere private to her. I asked her what it is about and she told me.

"Our general wanted to send us into a mission to save a village, not far from us, from being attacked by a few monsters. And he will send us later in another mission if we succeded it."

"Then let's go." I say to Emily why both of us are running back to our tents to take our weapons.

When we arrived there, both of us entered our own tents and take the weapons we need it. I wanted to take the wand and my spellbook and I had a better idea, instead of taking the wand, I took the staff that Emily and Big Gus has gifted me a few days ago. After we took our weapons, we go to our General and rapport to him that both of us are ready to go into that rescue or elimination mission we were assigned to it.
