Chapter 23 - - 23 -

Upon entering my room, I discovered that it was empty. I assumed that either I was fast enough that the girls had to take the next elevator or they were socializing elsewhere. Another thought came up that challenged the second option; if they wanted to go to the pool, they would have to enter their room to retrieve their bathing suits. I shook my head and decided to do whatever I needed to before they came back.

Next to the door was the promised foam mattress. It was fairly large and obviously unlike other cheap ones. Picking it up, it was soft and gave in easily the moment I pressed my hand into it. I quickly nudged myself. If they were to open the door, I would only be more of an inconvenience.

Looking around, I started to mentally evaluate the spots where I could place the mattress. Eliminating a few obvious locations, elected to place it just under an archway that led into a walk-in closet. Here, the girls would surely not see me while sleeping.

Moving my things, I began to hear more footsteps coming from the hallway. I retreated towards my section of the room before the door opened. As expected, my roommates had arrived.

"So boring," one spoke to the other. She slumped down onto her bed. "I thought we'd get to see some crystals. We were so wrong..."

"Yeah." Before joining her companion, the still standing creature peered around, still unaware that I was in the room with them. "Hey, where's that boy? I didn't see him anywhere." She gave up her search just as she had started it and flopped down onto the bed, laying with her back to the soft bed.

"Who cares about him?" The first alien dismissed. "He's just a pushover. Last time I checked he had almost no magical energy." She began to idly read a book that she had stashed in her pile of belongings.

"You're right," the other alien sighed. "Like a bug..." She flipped over and rummaged through her own suitcase and backpack. "Hey, you wanna go get something? I saw a bar just around a corner in the lobby."

The first scaline creature seemed moved by this idea. "Oh, good idea! My feet hurt so bad..."

A few lines of dialogue later, they disappeared from the room once again. Meanwhile, I felt a small spark of anger burn within me. Of course, I had a low amount of magical energy, I had only started school a few weeks ago.

Deciding to calm myself down and relieve myself of the long hike around the city that left parts of my scales dirty, I decided to briefly enter the shower while the girls were at the bar. While I fiddled with the knob to ensure that the water pouring out of the showerhead was at a good, consistent temperature, I hopped inside of it.

Brushing myself, I couldn't help but think about the girls' comments. While I attempted to shake them off by either sighing or closing my eyes momentarily or both, the thought would always return. My emotion of rage slowly began to build larger until I couldn't help myself from thinking about ways to exact my revenge on them. Partly against my will, I decided that I would have to resolve this conundrum indirectly through the use of traps.

Now refreshed, I quickly dried myself before exiting the washroom. Throughout my shower, I had thought up of my plan, even taking the time to resolve some issues that had risen while planning it. Now, I was confident that my victims would fall for whatever I had in store. With a grin involuntarily creeping across my face, I started to set everything up.

"Heheh..." The door opened as I was silently going over everything we had been taught in other lessons, as well as practicing some of my magic on a smaller scale. As expected, the two girls emerged.

"Hey look, it's him," one of them realized in a slightly slurred voice. I rolled my eyes, knowing immediately that they were intoxicated from their trip to the bar. This was also evident when they stumbled frequently as they strode across the floor. "You're not supposed to sleep there, okay?"

"What's wrong with this?" I peered once again at my surroundings. Setting things up, I ensured that there would be as much space between us as possible, but now my mattress was situated in a much more comfortable position. However, this did mean that I had to get a little extra exposure to the rest of the room.

"It's in the way." The other girl's voice became cold and intimidating. I had to mentally shake myself to keep my composure.

Inspecting the large gap that was between my bed and the girls', I pointed out the contradiction. The gap in question was at least five meters in length. "I assure you, it's not."

"Just get out of the way." One of them took a step towards me, still convincing me to move.

"No," I responded. "I was very uncomfortable in my previous spot, so I decided to move somewhere I could get a good night's sleep, which was here. I also considered the walking space between us, and we should have no interferences unless we go out of our way to irritate one another."

I felt my mattress move slightly. Turning around, I noticed that the girl the farthest away from me had started to kick at it, trying to usher me into moving it myself. When I refused, she began to kick harder.

"Just move it, snake!" The girls' tempers had met their end and from that point on their attitudes had suddenly shifted towards hostility. "We don't want you in here!"

I began to focus on their slurred speech as a means for me to dismiss their frequent insults. "No. I'm sorry, but I needed a comfortable place to sleep-"

"Shut up!" One of the girls momentarily stopped kicking and pointed at me. "We won't room with someone as weak as you! You haven't even had much training, have you?"

I squinted my eyes. As much as I was stifling my feelings, they started to sleep through my mental filter. "That's because I only enrolled a few-"

"What did I just say?! You'll move your mattress and let us be or else!"

Before I could attempt to speak louder than them, my anger completely bypassing the dam that I had constructed inside my mind, I was alerted by a voice whose source was behind me. Looking around, I quickly picked up the phone that I had left on a specific call. "I've heard enough. Room 1034, was it?"

Instantly, I was full of relief. Everything seemed to go out of focus when I pressed the phone on my ears. "Yes... T-Thank you, sir." I slowly ended the call before looking up, my surroundings coming into clear view once again.

The panic-stricken faces that were plastered on the girls were satisfying to my hyperactive self. I couldn't help but let a grin as silence flowed into the room, followed by furious glances in my direction as the girls hurriedly debated amongst themselves about what had just happened. Their temporarily inhibited minds disallowed them to talk clearly, and as a result they accomplished nothing before a knock came on the door. I rushed out of my bed and greeted the creature that I had called.

"Feste," my teacher greeted. "It's good that you stood up for yourself. Now..." He politely pushed past me as he encountered the girls, who now had expressions that clearly transmitted the emotion of fear. "I don't remember the guide telling you two to visit the bar. In fact, I told him to look out for anyone that would be heading in that direction." His teeth gritted in between words. "That means you snuck past him, correct?"

"Uh..." One of the girls stammered, "We didn't know!"

"You didn't know..." My teacher shook his head. "But you chose to abide by the rules when you read the rules of the school trip before you signed it, right? I remember typing out that you are forbidden to become drunk while on any excursions. Do you know what the punishment for that is?"

The girls shook their heads, and my teacher went on. "Alright, come with me. Both of you." He pointed at them with a slender claw. "First, you are going to do two extra assignments while the others are enjoying their times out here. On top of that, each of you are also going to manually read out the history of this civilization and write the essay then."

I watched from my mattress as the girls were pulled away through a portal presumably back to the school. Once they were gone, the teacher waves his hand and through the power of telekinesis, the girls' bags started following them through. I received a smile as our teacher started making his way back. "Thank you, Feste."

A minute later, I started moving once more. Looking around my room, I assumed that the girls had left for good as my teacher said. Deciding to take advantage of this, I moved my pile of belongings over to one of the larger beds, flopping down on it. From there, sleepiness began to overtake me and I figured that it was most likely past my bedtime anyway. Changing into my pyjamas, I settled into the now free bed.
