Chapter 54 - Flashback 16

May 4th, 2013; 4:36 am

The rain poured down into the dark silent night, only to be lit up now and then by a flash of lightning across the sky; the only sounds to be heard were those of cars honking in the distance and the crashes of thunder. I sat quietly, cradling Lolita's head in my lap as a shiver ran through me. I was still recovering from the fact that they had just left us, stranded in the middle of nowhere under the heavy rain.

A few seconds later, I heard the sounds of an ambulance in the distance; sighing in relief, I glanced down to Lolita's unconscious body.

"We're going to be fine" I muttered as I stroked her hair "I'll protect you"

Leaves rustled close by then as though someone had walked by, and my head snapped toward the sound. I stared into the darkness, my heartbeat picking up as I remembered the many horror movies I had watched; the only problem was I would not be running anywhere tonight. Not with Lolita's current state.

I heard the rustling once more and I swallowed the fear slowly building up within me. Summing up the little courage and strength I had left, I glanced toward the sounds.

"Who's there?"

Silence.

I glanced around frantically, searching for the sounds but my surroundings were eerily quiet. Just then, the rustling came again and my head snapped up.

In a split second, a cloth was slapped over my mouth and I felt someone breathe raggedly down my neck; I screamed but when the sounds came out muffled, my eyes widened in fear.

"Is this her?" I heard a deep voice say and I glanced around for the owner of the voice; a man stepped into view, wearing a black hoodie and grey sweatpants. When he knelt before me, I saw that his face was covered with the kind of masks that robbers wore so the only thing I could see was his eyes.

"Not this one," the person that was holding me said quickly "it's the passed out one"

Lolita?

What did they want with her?

They sounded like they knew her; like they had known exactly what she looked like. How did they know her?

Countless thoughts swam through my head as I glanced frantically at the man kneeling before me.

"Okay, you know what to do," the guy muttered then as my eyes slowly widened "I'll take care of this one"

Wait 'take care'?

What was that supposed to mean?

I started squirming around then, desperately trying to get out of the man's hold as Lolita was lifted out of my lap. The man tightened his grip on me as my arms flailed helplessly.

What were they planning to do her?

"Hush now girl," the man holding me down cooed soothingly in my ear and my heartbeats quickened, thoughts flying all over the place. Slowly, the man let go with one hand, holding me tighter with other and reached into his pocket "you won't remember a thing"

What?

My eyes widened.

"Help," I screamed desperately then, for anyone to hear, the sirens of the ambulance getting closer but my screams were muffled by the cloth over my mouth. It was at that moment, that I felt a sharp pain at the base of my neck as though I had been stabbed with a needle; I gasped out in pain.

"Sleep now" he muttered.

Slowly, I could feel my eyes grow heavy and my heartbeat slow down. He released me and I yanked myself away from him, the sudden movement causing my vision to blur. I extended my arms out for Lolita and felt her cold and lifeless body a few inches away from me. My eyelids had grown extremely heavy at that point, and my vision had meshed my surroundings into one big blurry gob of darkness.

Sighing painfully, I lay my head on Lolita gently, covered her protectively with my arms, and closed my eyes.
