Chapter 49 - Flashback 15

May 4th 2013; 4:02am

"Shay"

I gasped, sputtering as I coughed up buckets of water that had somehow found its way into my throat. I took in deep breaths and frantically glanced around me. It was drizzling, raindrops falling onto my face and slightly blurring my vision.

"You're alive! Oh thank God"

I dragged my gaze to stare at the boy next to me; he was smiling fully.

"Who are you?" I asked as I studied the familiar brown-haired boy staring weirdly at me. Slowly, a massive headache crept in and I groaned, placing my head in my hands. The boy shuffled around, extending a pill and a bottle of water toward me.

"Here," he pushed the bottle into my hand and held out the pill "Take this"

I did as I was told, sighing when the cool liquid rushed down my throat. I glanced back up at him with a small smile.

"What happened?" my voice was croaky, as though I hadn't spoken in days; the boy kneeling in relief next to me sighed and held out a hand. Slowly, he pulled me up, leaving a hand on my waist to steady me when I stumbled.

"Your car swerved off the bridge"

What?

I stared at him, my eyes widening as everything slowly rushed back to me

He nodded.

"Where's Lolita?"

"Shawn and Drew are pulling her out of the river"

I stared at him in shock, and glanced toward the water, immediately rushing forward. There was no sign of my sister or the two boys that were saving her.

"You saved me first? Why would you do that?" I asked frantically, the gratitude I had once felt for the brown-haired boy turning into annoyance. He looked at me in shock, as though he weren't hearing me.

"You know, a simple 'thank you' would be awesome"

I gritted my teeth as I stared back out over the water.

"Or 'Thank you O mighty Avian, you are my hero"

I dragged my gaze back to him.

"Really?" I glanced at him with a raised brow. He closed his mouth and stared at me, before shrugging his shoulders and looking away. I rolled my eyes and glanced back out to the water; a head popped up then, gasping for air.

Then two; then three.

"Oh my God, call an ambulance" I ran toward the river as both boys dragged her body out of the water; she looked pale and lifeless.

My heart clenched and I froze.

"Don't worry, she's alive! Just unconscious"

The relief that washed over me then was indescribable; I put my right hand on her hair as they carried her over to their car. One of the boys turned up the heat as we placed Lolita onto the backseat, before covering her limp body with a coat. I sighed and ran my hands through my hair, before turning to the two boys who looked like twins; they both had the same shade of white-blonde hair and blue eyes, one a deeper color than the other.

"Thank you" I muttered, shooting them a small smile. The third brown-haired boy looked at me in shock and yanked his head back, staring at me in shock.

"Hey, I save your life, get a shitty "mph" and they get proper thank yous"?

I sighed and turned to him.

"They saved my sister's life. That's all I care about"

"She's unconscious"

"She's alive," I gritted my teeth "that's all that matters"

One of the blonde-haired boys stepped forward, shooting the brown-haired boy, who muttered "unbelievable" a stern look, before walking up to me with a small smile.

"I'm Shay" I muttered, extending my hand. He chuckled slightly and shook it.

"We know," he said and I scrunched up my eyebrows in confusion "we were at your party. Sorry we had to leave early"

I glanced at the three of them, not remembering them from the party.

"I'm sorry; I had a lot to drink"

"It's okay," his brother stepped up with a smirk "I'm Drew, this is my brother Shawn," then he pointed at the brown-haired boy "and the doofus over there is Avian"

Avian shot Drew a dirty look, before turning his gaze back to me.

Maybe that's why he had seemed kind of familiar; I had probably met him at the party. I nodded with a small smile and ran my hands through my hair.

"My brother and I know her," Drew said then, glancing with a small smile at Lolita as she lay on their back seat. I looked at them curiously.

"You do? How?"

Drew scratched the back of his head and glanced at his brother.

"She used to," he hesitated as if looking for words to describe it "she used to come to our school; she had a couple of friends there"

My mind flashed back to the conversation she had had with that girl Roxy. Who was she? Was she one of the "friends" Shawn was talking about?

I walked over and sat near Lolita's feet, extending my hands toward one of the vents; they warmed up instantly.

"I didn't know that"

"Yeah," Shawn muttered as though he was hiding something; I stared skeptically at him as he avoided eye contact.

"She's the one that invited us to your party"

I nodded, glancing back at Lolita.

We were quiet as we waited for the ambulance to show up; I had wrapped my arms around myself in an attempt to get warmer, before glancing up at the boys. Shawn and Drew were exchanging weird looks between one another and Avian was just sort of…staring at me.

Um.

Shawn cleared his throat then, so I dragged my gaze from Avian to him.

"I'm sorry Shay," Shawn glanced at his brother briefly "but we have to go"

Hold up, what?

I stared at them in shock.

"The ambulance is on their way," Drew said, looking at me apologetically "and we have to be somewhere"

"You can't just leave us here" I was still having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that they were about to up and leave, especially when I had a passed out sister, for heaven's sake.

"I am sorry Shay," Shawn muttered anxiously, scratching the back of his neck "but we do have to leave. It's urgent"

I turned to Avian; he shrugged slightly and avoided my gaze. Completely ignoring my protests, the boys gently lifted Lolita out of the car, and placed her on the floor next to me; I sat down and put her head in my lap

"Are you guys seriously doing this?"

"We are sorry" Drew said as they all climbed in the car. Avian glanced at me hesitantly, before closing the car door firmly. With that, they were gone; the only thing remaining was the dust their car left behind. I glanced down hopelessly at Lolita, who had begun to shiver slightly because of the cold.

What was I supposed to do now?
