Chapter 1 - prologue

Five years ago.

"So," my mom pushed as we walked down the dark street lit up by street lights. "How does it feel to be thirteen?" she asked for what felt like the hundredth time "You know my birthday was two weeks ago right?" "Yeah but I just can't believe you're a teenager now. You're growing up so fast." She looked at me and smiled. I was about to reply when my mom stopped dead in her tracks. "What is it?" I asked, getting nervous. I looked around and realized we were the only ones on the street. Then out of nowhere four men wearing black suits appeared. they had some sort of mask on that was different from the normal muggers I'd seen on tv. I could slightly make out a symbol of a helmet on one arm of the suit. Each of them had some sort of whip in their hands that shot off sparks of electricity. My mom shielded me with her body then turned to face me cupping her hands around my cheeks. "I need you to listen to me very carefully." "Mom what's going on?" her eyes filled with tears and slipped down her cheeks. "I'll always love you, don't you ever forget that." tears started spilling down my face as well. "Mom-" she hugged me. "I want you to run as fast as you can far away from here. Do not look back. Do you understand?" I nodded against her shoulder. She let go and looked me straight in the eyes. My face reflected off of her eyes. "Run." she said. "Run!" So I ran. I ran and I didn't look back, as much as I wanted to her words echoed in my mind. Run, do not look back. I ran even as the big fat drops of tears fell from my eyes and clouded my vision. I ran and didn't stop until I was far far away.
